Objective: Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in the modern era. Myocardial infarction is a condition where there is a significant decrease or block in the blood (oxygen) supply to the part of heart, leading to degeneration of a portion of the myocardium which triggers a cascade of cellular, inflammatory and biochemical events, leading eventually to the irreversible death (necrosis) of heart muscle cells. Various therapeutic interventions, including lifestyle modification, pharmacological treatment options, and surgical techniques are available. The present review focus on the plants that have been evaluated for cardioprotective activity against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction.Method: The current status of Cardioprotective plants was obtained from a literature search of electronic databases such as Google Scholar, Pubmed and Scopus up to 2017 for publications on medicinal plants used against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction. Isoproterenol, Isoprenaline, myocardial infarction, cardioprotective were used as keywords for the searching.Result: A total of 117 different plant parts and their extracts have till now been published to possess cardioprotection against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction. Isoproterenol a beta-adrenergic receptors agonist causes severe stress in myocardium resulting in the infarct-like lesion and produced cardiotoxic effects by elevating the levels of cardiac biomarkers and causing changes in ECG. Plant-based medicines with their antioxidant, antiapoptotic, antihyperlipidemic, platelet antiaggregatory, anti-lipid peroxidation property provide substantial evidence for the management of Ischemia. Conclusion: This review, therefore, provides a useful resource to enable a thorough assessment of the profile of plants that have cardioprotective activity against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction

Background: Ectopic pregnancy is the implantation of the blastocyst elsewhere except the endometrial lining of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening adverse pregnancy outcome and it requires prompt evaluation and treatment. It remains to be one of the leading causes of maternal death in the first trimester. But with better health facilities, early diagnosis and prompt treatment morbidity and mortality can be reduced. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted over a period of 2 and a half-years from July 2018 to December 2020, in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Adichunchanagiri Hospital and Research Centre, B. G. Nagara, Karnataka. A total of 22 cases were admitted at our hospital during this time frame. Four modes of treatment were given according to the patient's condition, ultrasound findings and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels; these were laparoscopy, laparotomy, methotrexate injection and conservative management. The outcome measures included success of each treatment modality, need for second mode of treatment in each group and duration of hospital stay. Data was collected in a preconceived format from the patient database retrospectively and analyzed. Results: Total numbers of vaginal deliveries were 4626 during the study period. Of which 0.49% were diagnosed as ectopic pregnancy. The mean age in this study was 26.5 years. Previous history of tubectomy (22.7%), lower segment caesarean section (13.6%), and previous abortion/medical termination of pregnancy (18.1%), pelvic inflammatory disease (9.09%), previous oral contraceptive pills (OCP) use (9.09%), and ovulation induction (4.5%) were major contributing factors responsible for incidence of ectopic pregnancy. The pain was the most consistent presenting symptom in 90.9% of women. A classical triad of ectopic pregnancy (pain, amenorrhea and bleeding per vaginum) seen in 77.2% women. The incidence of tubal ectopic was maximum, i.e. 19 (86.4%) cases out of 22 cases. Among tubal ectopic pregnancies, the most common site was ampulla (68.18%). 14 (63.61%) cases were of ruptured ectopic pregnancies. Complete salpingectomy (50%) was done in maximum women. Salpingo oophorectomy was done in 9.09%. Methotrexate was given to 22.7% of the women. No significant morbidity and mortality was found in our study among 22 patients. Conclusions: Proper evaluation of pregnancy with associated risk factors and early diagnosis will help to preserve the tube and in turn her fertility and thus helps in decreasing morbidity and mortality.

Myth or Fact? An Analysis of COVID-19 Deaths in Red or Blue States of America

This study examines the correlation between political leanings and COVID-19 mortality across the states of America affiliated with Republican and Democratic governance. Employing emergent self-organizing map (ESOM), cluster analysis, and the logistic classification, we group states based on COVID-19 properties, identify risk patterns, and assess risk levels. Factors considered include poverty rate, education rate, vaccination rate, and demographics. The Logistic Algorithm succinctly summarizes findings, integrating ESOM, cluster analysis, and logistic classification results. This multi-method approach aims to offer a concise, yet comprehensive understanding of the COVID-19 risk landscape in politically diverse states, shedding light on potential associations between political affiliations and pandemic outcomes. *This article was published as part of the Proceedings of the 16th Symposium on BEER and reviewed for editorial clarity only

The Energy Challenge: Moving from Fossil Fuels to Biofuels, Hydrogen, and Green Energy Sources

The aim of this literature research is to evaluate and identify alternative sources of energy instead of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, and coal are known as nonrenewable resources because they are finite resources that cannot be readily replenished at the same pace as their consumption. The alternatives that will be searched for in this literature review are specifically, biofuels, hydrogen, and green energy sources which are all known as renewable. The review will then focus on hydrogen as true potential replacement of fossil fuels. In some countries, alternative renewable sources include geothermal energy, nuclear energy, solar energy, wind energy, and hydroelectric technologies. Hydroelectricity is the only renewable energy that is reliable. Generally, renewable energy sources generate most of their energy at certain times of the day, and their electricity generation does not match the peak demand hours. The intermittency of sunshine and wind cannot provide an on-demand power source 24 hours a week. Solar energy and wind are unpredictable. Unlike fossil fuel, green/renewable energy does not appear to be a one size fits all solution. The use of multiple sources is generally required to meet energy needs. Identifying those sources and evaluating their viability is the adjusted purpose of this research projec

Consistency of local perceptions of climate change in the Kangchenjunga Himalaya landscape

    Get PDF
The Himalaya is experiencing rapid climate change that is likely to significantly impact local ecosystems, biodiversity, agriculture and human well-being. However, the scientific community has been slow to examine the extent and consequences of climate change. Local communities have been coping with environmental change since millennia. Thus they often have considerable knowledge about environmental change and means to cope with its consequences. We (a) examined the perceptions of local communities about climate change and its impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity, agriculture and livelihoods in the Kangchenjunga Himalayas region; (b) analysed the consistency of perceptions across geographical regions, and (c) assessed the conformity between local perceptions and scientific evidence. Our study is based on surveys conducted in 576 households, focus group discussions, key informant surveys and direct observations. The results show that people in the Kangchenjunga Himalayas region have considerable knowledge of climate change and its effects on the weather, ecosystems, biodiversity and agriculture. These perceptions are consistent across the region and conform to scientific findings

Atmospheric Influence on the Path Loss at High Frequencies for Deployment of 5G Cellular Communication Networks

Over the past few decades, the development of cellular communication technology has spanned several generations in order to add sophisticated features in the updated versions. Moreover, different high-frequency bands are considered for advanced cellular generations. The presence of updated generations like 4G and 5G is driven by the rising demand for a greater data rate and a better experience for end users. However, because 5G-NR operates at a high frequency and has significant propagation, atmospheric fluctuations like temperature, humidity, and rain rate might result in poorer signal reception, and higher path loss effects unlike the prior generation, which employed frequencies below 6 GHz. This paper makes an attempt to provide a comparative analysis about the influence of different relative atmospheric conditions on 5G cellular communication for various operating frequencies in any urban microcell (UMi) environment maintaining the real outdoor propagation conditions. In addition, the simulation dataset based on environmental factors has been validated by the prediction of path loss using multiple regression techniques. Consequently, this study also aims to address the performance analysis of regression techniques for stable estimations of path loss at high frequencies for different atmospheric conditions for 5G mobile generations due to various possible radio link quality issues and fluctuations in different seasons in South Asia. Furthermore, in comparison to contemporary studies, the Machine Learning models have outperformed in predicting the path loss for the four seasons in South Asian regions.Comment: Accepted for presentation at THE 14th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTING, COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKING TECHNOLOGIES (ICCCNT
