Heisenberg exchange enhancement by orbital relaxation in cuprate compounds
We calculate the Heisenberg exchange J in the quasi-2D antiferromagnetic
cuprates La2CuO4, YBa2Cu3O6, Nd2CuO4 and Sr2CuO2Cl2. We apply all-electron
(MC)SCF and non-orthogonal CI calculations to [Cu2O11]18-, [Cu2O9]14-,
[Cu2O7]10- and [Cu2O7Cl4]14- clusters in a model charge embedding. The (MC)SCF
triplet and singlet ground states are well characterized by Cu2+ (dx2-y2) and
O2-. The antiferromagnetic exchange is strongly enhanced by admixing relaxed
(MC)SCF triplet and singlet excited states, in which a single electron is
transferred from the central O ion to Cu. We ascribe this effect to orbital
relaxation in the charge transfer component of the wave function. Close

Pulsar Searches with the SKA
The Square Kilometre Array will be an amazing instrument for pulsar
astronomy. While the full SKA will be sensitive enough to detect all pulsars in
the Galaxy visible from Earth, already with SKA1, pulsar searches will discover
enough pulsars to increase the currently known population by a factor of four,
no doubt including a range of amazing unknown sources. Real time processing is
needed to deal with the 60 PB of pulsar search data collected per day, using a
signal processing pipeline required to perform more than 10 POps. Here we
present the suggested design of the pulsar search engine for the SKA and

The Distributed ASCI Supercomputer (DAS) is a homogeneous wide-area distributed system consisting of four cluster computers at different locations. DAS has been used for research on communication software, parallel languages and programming systems, schedulers, parallel applications, and distributed applications. Activation of the MAPK pathway is a common event in uveal melanomas although it rarely occurs through mutation of BRAF or RAS
In contrast to cutaneous melanoma, there is no evidence that BRAF mutations are involved in the activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway in uveal melanoma, although there is increasing evidence that this pathway is activated frequently in the latter tumours. In this study, we performed mutation analysis of the RAS and BRAF genes in a panel of 11 uveal melanoma cell lines and 19 primary uveal melanoma tumours. In addition, Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses were performed on downstream members of the MAPK pathway in order to assess the contribution of each of these components. No mutations were found in any of the three RAS gene family members and only one cell line carried a BRAF mutation (V599E). Despite this, mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase kinase (MEK), ERK and ELK were constitutively activated in all samples. These data suggest that activation of the MAPK pathway is commonly involved in the development of uveal melanoma, but occurs through a mechanism different to that of cutaneous melanoma
Effects of the noradrenergic agonist clonidine on temporal and spatial attention
Rationale: Recent theories posit an important role for the noradrenergic system in attentional selection in the temporal domain. In contrast, the spatially diffuse topographical projections of the noradrenergic system are inconsistent with a direct role in spatial selection. Objectives: To test the hypotheses that pharmacological attenuation of central noradrenergic activity should (1) impair performance on the attentional blink task, a task requiring the selection of targets in a rapid serial visual stream of stimuli; and (2) leave intact the efficiency of the search for a target in a two-dimensional visuospatial stimulus array. Materials and methods: Thirty-two healthy adult human subjects performed an attentional blink task and a visual search task in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, between-subject study investigating the effects of the α2 adrenoceptor agonist clonidine (150 μg, oral dose). Results: No differential effects of clonidine vs placebo were found on the attentional blink performance. Clonidine slowed overall reaction times in the visual search task but did not impair the efficiency of the visual search. Conclusions: The attentional blink results are inconsistent with recent theories about the role of the noradrenergic system in temporal filtering and in mediating the attentional blink. This discrepancy between theory and data is discussed in detail. The visual search results, in combination with previous findings, suggest that the noradrenergic system is not directly involved in spatial attention processes but instead can modulate these processes in an indirect fashion. © 2007 Springer-Verlag
