The Construction of Neighbourhoods and its Relevance for the Measurement of Social and Ethnic Segregation: Evidence from Denmark
In this paper we propose a model for constructing neighbourhoods based on geo-referenced data and administrative data. The 431,233 inhabited hectare cells in Denmark are clustered into 9,404 small and 2,296 large neighbourhoods, inhabited on average in 2004 by 572 and 2,343 persons respectively. The priorities in the clustering process are to obtain neighbourhoods that are unaltered over time, delineated by physical barriers, compact, homogeneous in terms of type of housing and ownership, relatively small, homogeneous in terms of number of inhabitants, and comprised of a contiguous cluster of cells. To illustrate the importance of detailed neighbourhood information we compare social and ethnic segregation measured by Isolation and Dissimilation indices on the levels of municipalities and of small neighbourhoods. Our findings demonstrate substantial variation in the residential mix in neighbourhoods within a given municipality, and thus show the importance of having information on a more detailed geographical level than that of the municipality.geo-referenced data, neighbourhoods, segregation

Asylums at war: Duston War Hospital, 1916-1919
In early 1917, Duston War Hospital opened its doors to sick and wounded Allied servicemen. 'This new Hospital was not actually new at all, but one of twenty-four asylums requisitions as part of the British war effort'. Duston War Hospital went on to care for thousands of men until its closure in 1919. But what happened to its civilian inmates during the war
Ammonia transformation in a biotrickling air filter
[Abstract] A simple, tubular biotrickling filter was designed for optimal removal of ammonia and odour in ventilation air from a pig house. The removal and transformation of ammonia was studied in detail by analysis and modelling of chemical gradients through the filter. Good correspondence between measurements and model was obtained by using conventional substrate and inhibition kinetics of ammonium and nitrite oxidizing bacteria. Highest rates of ammonia removal were observed in the central section of the filter. Near the air outlet and water inlet the process was ammonia limited, while high nitrous acid concentrations almost excluded any biological activity near the air inlet and water outlet. Nitrous acid inhibition also stabilized pH at 6.5-7 all through the filter. Being sensitive to both ammonia and nitrous acid the nitrite oxidation process occurred mainly in the filter sections near the air outlet / water inlet, and only 8% of the nitrite was turned into nitrate. Water supply only exceeded evaporation by 20% but modelling indicated that additional watering would have limited effect on filter efficiency. The filter was also robust to varying loading, as a 4-fold increase in ammonia inlet concentration only reduced filter efficiency from 86 to 76%
Assessing the impact: Mandatory and minimum sentences in South Africa
The legislation passed in 1997 that provides for mandatory minimum sentences for serious crimes was
recently extended for another two years. At the time, the aim was to reduce serious and violent crime,
achieve consistency in sentencing, and satisfy the public that sentences were sufficiently severe. This article
argues that the legislation has achieved little or no significant impact with regard to these goals. Instead,
many agree that the provisions have exacerbated the problem of overcrowding in South African prisons.DHE
