In-depth mesocrystal formation analysis of microwave-assisted synthesis of LiMnPO4nanostructures in organic solution
In the present work, we report on the preparation of LiMnPO4 (lithiophilite) nanorods and mesocrystals composed of self-assembled rod subunits employing microwave-assisted precipitation with processing times on the time scale of minutes. Starting from metal salt precursors and H3PO4 as phosphate source, single-phase LiMnPO4 powders with grain sizes of approx. 35 and 65 nm with varying morphologies were obtained by tailoring the synthesis conditions using rac-1-phenylethanol as solvent. The mesocrystal formation, microstructure and phase composition were determined by electron microscopy, nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction (including Rietveld refinement), dynamic light scattering, X-ray absorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and other techniques. In addition, we investigated the formed organic matter by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry in order to gain a deeper understanding of the dissolution\u2013precipitation process. Also, we demonstrate that the obtained LiMnPO4 nanocrystals can be redispersed in polar solvents such as ethanol and dimethylformamide and are suitable as building blocks for the fabrication of nanofibers via electrospinning
Elastic behaviour of the carotid artery in intact spontaneously hypertensive rats
Intact spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were studied to assess the effect of prolonged antihypertensive treatment on the elastic behaviour of the external carotid artery. Thirty-week-old SHR received the ACE inhibitor captopril, the ateriolar dilator hydralazine or their vehicle for 6 weeks. These rats were compared to normotensive, vehicle treated WKY rats. The internal diameter of the carotid artery was measured continuously in halothane-anaesthetized rats using an echo-tracking device, and intra-arterial pressure was also monitored continuously, on the controlateral side. Captopril- and hydralazinetreated SHR as well as normotensive controls had similar blood pressure values. No significant shift in the distensibility-pressure curves was observed among vehicle-treated SHR and WKY rats or the SHR which had received captopril or hydralazine. Histological examination of the carotid artery fixed ex vivo with paraformaldehyde showed a significant increase in cross-sectional area in vehicle-treated SHR as compared to their normotensive counterparts. These results therefore suggest that the elastic behaviour of elastic arteries is not necessarily altered by the structural changes developing in response to hypertensio
Microsatellite instability and defects in mismatch repair proteins: a new aetiology for Sertoli cell‐only syndrome
Microsatellite instability is characteristic of certain types of cancer, and is present in rodents lacking specific DNA mismatch repair proteins. These azoospermic mice exhibit spermatogenic defects similar to some human testicular failure patients. Therefore, we hypothesized that microsatellite instability due to deficiencies in mismatch repair genes might be an unrecognized aetiology of human testicular failure. Because these azoospermic patients are candidates for testicular sperm extraction and ICSI, transmission of mismatch repair defects to the offspring is possible. Seven microsatellite loci were analysed for instability in specimens from 41 testicular failure patients and 20 controls. Blood and testicular DNA were extracted from patient and control specimens, and amplified by PCR targeting seven microsatellite loci. DNA fragment length was analysed with an ABI Prism 310 Genotyping Machine and GeneScan software. Immunohistochemistry was performed on paraffinized testis biopsy sections and cultured testicular fibroblasts from each patient to determine if expression of the mismatch repair proteins hMSH2 and hMLH1 was normal in both somatic and germline cells. Results demonstrate that microsatellite instability and DNA mismatch repair protein defects are present in some azoospermic men, predominantly in Sertoli cell‐only patients (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05 respectively). This provides evidence of a previously unrecognized aetiology of testicular failure that may be associated with cancer predispositio
Rab27a Contributes to the Processing of Inflammatory Pain in Mice
Tissue injury and inflammation may result in chronic pain, a severe debilitating disease that is associated with great impairment of quality of life. An increasing body of evidence indicates that members of the Rab family of small GTPases contribute to pain processing; however, their specific functions remain poorly understood. Here, we found using immunofluorescence staining and in situ hybridization that the small GTPase Rab27a is highly expressed in sensory neurons and in the superficial dorsal horn of the spinal cord of mice. Rab27a mutant mice, which carry a single-nucleotide missense mutation of Rab27a leading to the expression of a nonfunctional protein, show reduced mechanical hyperalgesia and spontaneous pain behavior in inflammatory pain models, while their responses to acute noxious mechanical and thermal stimuli is not affected. Our study uncovers a previously unrecognized function of Rab27a in the processing of persistent inflammatory pain in mice.publishersversionpublishe
Cholesterol-lowering properties of Ganoderma lucidum in vitro, ex vivo, and in hamsters and minipigs
INTRODUCTION: There has been renewed interest in mushroom medicinal properties. We studied cholesterol lowering properties of Ganoderma lucidum (Gl), a renowned medicinal species. RESULTS: Organic fractions containing oxygenated lanosterol derivatives inhibited cholesterol synthesis in T9A4 hepatocytes. In hamsters, 5% Gl did not effect LDL; but decreased total cholesterol (TC) 9.8%, and HDL 11.2%. Gl (2.5 and 5%) had effects on several fecal neutral sterols and bile acids. Both Gl doses reduced hepatic microsomal ex-vivo HMG-CoA reductase activity. In minipigs, 2.5 Gl decreased TC, LDL- and HDL cholesterol 20, 27, and 18%, respectively (P < 0.05); increased fecal cholestanol and coprostanol; and decreased cholate. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, Gl has potential to reduce LDL cholesterol in vivo through various mechanisms. Next steps are to: fully characterize bioactive components in lipid soluble/insoluble fractions; evaluate bioactivity of isolated fractions; and examine human cholesterol lowering properties. Innovative new cholesterol-lowering foods and medicines containing Gl are envisioned
Transport regimes of cold gases in a two-dimensional anisotropic disorder
We numerically study the dynamics of cold atoms in a two-dimensional
disordered potential. We consider an anisotropic speckle potential and focus on
the classical regime, which is relevant to some recent experiments. First, we
study the behavior of particles with a fixed energy and identify different
transport regimes. For low energy, the particles are classically localized due
to the absence of a percolating cluster. For high energy, the particles undergo
normal diffusion and we show that the diffusion constants scale algebraically
with the particle energy, with an anisotropy factor which significantly differs
from that of the disordered potential. For intermediate energy, we find a
transient sub-diffusive regime, which is relevant to the time scale of typical
experiments. Second, we study the behavior of a cold-atomic gas with an
arbitrary energy distribution, using the above results as a groundwork. We show
that the density profile of the atomic cloud in the diffusion regime is
strongly peaked and, in particular, that it is not Gaussian. Its behavior at
large distances allows us to extract the energy-dependent diffusion constants
from experimental density distributions. For a thermal cloud released into the
disordered potential, we show that our numerical predictions are in agreement
with experimental findings. Not only does this work give insights to recent
experimental results, but it may also serve interpretation of future
experiments searching for deviation from classical diffusion and traces of
Anderson localization.Comment: 19 pages, 16 figure

Effect of shunted piezoelectric control for tuning piezoelectric power harvesting system responses – Analytical techniques
This paper presents new analytical modelling of shunt circuit control responses for tuning electromechanical piezoelectric vibration power harvesting structures with proof mass offset. For this combination, the dynamic closed-form boundary value equations reduced from strong form variational principles were developed using the extended Hamiltonian principle to formulate the new coupled orthonormalised electromechanical power harvesting equations showing combinations of the mechanical system (dynamical behaviour of piezoelectric structure), electromechanical system (electrical piezoelectric response) and electrical system (tuning and harvesting circuits). The reduced equations can be further formulated to give the complete forms of new electromechanical multi-mode FRFs and time waveform of the standard AC-DC circuit interface. The proposed technique can demonstrate self-adaptive harvesting response capabilities for tuning the frequency band and the power amplitude of the harvesting devices. The self-adaptive tuning strategies are demonstrated by modelling the shunt circuit behaviour of the piezoelectric control layer in order to optimise the harvesting piezoelectric layer during operation under input base excitation. In such situations, with proper tuning parameters the system performance can be substantially improved. Moreover, the validation of the closed-form technique is also provided by developing the Ritz method-based weak form analytical approach giving similar results. Finally, the parametric analytical studies have been explored to identify direct and relevant contributions for vibration power harvesting behaviours
