    Current status of the multinational Arabidopsis community

    The multinational Arabidopsis research community is highly collaborative and over the past thirty years these activities have been documented by the Multinational Arabidopsis Steering Committee (MASC). Here, we (a) highlight recent research advances made with the reference plant Arabidopsis thaliana; (b) provide summaries from recent reports submitted by MASC subcommittees, projects and resources associated with MASC and from MASC country representatives; and (c) initiate a call for ideas and foci for the “fourth decadal roadmap,” which will advise and coordinate the global activities of the Arabidopsis research community

    Electrodeposition of Co-Ni-MoxOy Powders: Part I. The Influence of Deposition Conditions on Powder Composition and Morphology

    The Co-Ni-MoxOy powders were obtained electrochemically at a constant current density from ammonia electrolyte. Ni and Co were anomalously deposited, inducing Mo deposition, which cannot be deposited separately from aqueous solutions. The obtained Co-Ni-MoxOy powders were investigated by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electon microscope (SEM) methods. Based on the obtained experimental results, it was concluded that the particle size of deposited powders is influenced by the chemical composition of the electrolyte and current density imposed. XRD results suggested that obtained powders were of amorphous structure, although a Co3Mo compound can be formed if certain experimental conditions are applied

    Microplanning with Communicative Intentions: The SPUD System

    The process of microplanning in Natural Language Generation (NLG) encompasses a range of problems in which a generator must bridge underlying domain-specific representations and general linguistic representations. These problems include constructing linguistic referring expressions to identify domain objects, selecting lexical items to express domain concepts, and using complex linguistic constructions to concisely convey related domain facts. In this paper, we argue that such problems are best solved through a uniform, comprehensive, declarative process. In our approach, the generator directly explores a search space for utterances described by a linguistic grammar. At each stage of search, the generator uses a model of interpretation, which characterizes the potential links between the utterance and the domain and context, to assess its progress in conveying domain-specific representations. We further address the challenges for implementation and knowledge representation in this approach. We show how to implement this approach effectively by using the lexicalized tree-adjoining grammar formalism (LTAG) to connect structure to meaning and using modal logic programming to connect meaning to context.     Modeling a galvoscanner with an optimized scanning function

    The paper presents the modeling of a galvanometer-based scanning device with an increased duty cycle, i.e. a high efficiency of using the available time for the scanning process. From the basic dynamic equations of the oscillating element, the active torque and the command function that have to be used are derived. An analytical study is performed on the possible profiles of the scanning function, and an optimum solution is demonstrated, in order to obtain an as small as possible inertia torque and an as high as possible duty cycle. The active torque and the command functions are deduced for this optimum scanning law. A MathCAD study of the command function with regard to the desired scanning (oscillating) frequency completes the modeling process. © Springer Science +Business Media, B.V. 2010

    Identifying and tracking entity mentions in a maximum entropy framework

    abei,nanda,nicolas,roukos,sm1¢ We present a system for identifying and tracking named, nominal, and pronominal mentions of entities within a text document. Our maximum entropy model for mention detection combines two pre-existing named entity taggers (built to extract different entity categories), and other syntactic and morphological feature streams to achieve competitive performance. We developed a novel maximum entropy model for tracking all mentions of an entity within a document. We participated in the Automatic Content Extraction (ACE) evaluation and performed well. We describe our system and present results of the ACE evaluation.
