    Item Response Models to measure Corporate Social Responsibility

    Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a multidimensional con- cept that involves several aspects, ranging from Environment, to Social and Governance. Companies aiming to comply with CSR standards have to face challenges that vary from one aspect to the other and from one industry to the other. Latent variable models may be use- fully employed to provide a unidimensional measure of the grade of compliance of a firm with CSR standards that is both understand- able and theoretically solid. A methodology based on Item Response Theory has been implemented on the multidimensional sustainability rating as expressed by KLD dataset from 1991 to 2007. Results sug- gest that companies in the industry Oil & Gas together with firms in Industrials, Basic Materials and Telecommunications have a higher difficulty to meet the CSR standards. Criteria based on Human rights, Environment, Community and Product quality have a large capacity to select the best performing firms, as they are very discriminant, while Governance does not exhibit similar behavior. A stock selection based on the ranking of the firms according to the proposed CSR measure supports the hypothesis of a positive relationship between CSR and financial performanc

    On the Absorption of X-rays in the Interstellar Medium

    We present an improved model for the absorption of X-rays in the ISM intended for use with data from future X-ray missions with larger effective areas and increased energy resolution such as Chandra and XMM, in the energy range above 100eV. Compared to previous work, our formalism includes recent updates to the photoionization cross section and revised abundances of the interstellar medium, as well as a treatment of interstellar grains and the H2molecule. We review the theoretical and observational motivations behind these updates and provide a subroutine for the X-ray spectral analysis program XSPEC that incorporates our model.Comment: ApJ, in press, for associated software see http://astro.uni-tuebingen.de/nh

    Integration of Human Factors in Surgery: Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Design, Development, and Evaluation of Surgical Technologies

    Research in surgical intervention and technology development is increasingly interdisciplinary. Despite the great potential of working in this way, recent research suggests that interdisciplinary collaborations and competing stakeholder interests can be challenging to initiate and manage, with the result that knowledge and expertise from different fields are not always well integrated. The aim of this workshop is to bring together stakeholders from HCI, surgical science, and surgical practice and technology to investigate the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration, specifically identifying actionable strategies to coordinate and improve efforts towards designing, developing, evaluating, and iterating on the next generation of surgical solutions. The workshop will address current limitations in interdisciplinary collaboration, and identify opportunities for surgical technology stakeholders to make contributions across the entire development life cycle. In the longer term, the workshop will contribute towards the development of a pragmatic collaboration framework encompassing diverse research paradigms, compatible with surgical practice, and supportive of longitudinal evaluation

    La experiencia realizada en la Comunidad Terapéutica de Tekové-Rogá se encuadra en el Proyecto de Ejecución Práctica y Educación en Energías Renovables y Agua Potable, su implementación depende del Ministerio de Desarrollo Social de la Nación, la Secretaría Nacional de Niñez, Adolescencia y Familia (SENNAF) y la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTN). El objetivo del trabajo es analizar el impacto social que este tipo de experiencias genera, para lograrlo el abordaje metodológico utilizado fue cuanti-cualitativo, en tanto se recolectaron datos estadísticos de la institución que permitieron relevar información sobre su plantel profesional, y cualitativa en tanto indagamos las percepciones que los actores de la institución tienen en relación al proyecto de ejecución en energías renovables. Las conclusiones principales dan cuenta del impacto social en tres ejes diferentes: el impacto a nivel institucional de la comunidad terapéutica, el impacto a nivel socio-cultural y el impacto a nivel académico.The experience realized in Tekové-Rogá's Therapeutic Community is fitted in the Project of Practical Execution and Education in Renewable Energies and Water, his implementation depends on the Department of Social Development of the Nation, the National Secretariat of Childhood, Adolescence and Family (SENNAF) and the Technological National University (UTN). The work analyze the social impact that this type of experiences. The principal conclusions are in three different axes: the first one is related to the impact to institutional level of the therapeutic community, the second one links itself with the impact to socio-cultural level, which can be indirect ó directly.     Help-seeking behaviour for pelvic floor dysfunction in women over 55: drivers and barriers

    Objective: Our aim was to identify drivers of and barriers to help-seeking behaviour of older women with pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) living independently in Australia . Methods: Women aged =55 years were recruited to this cross-sectional study during July and August 2016. Bladder, bowel, pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and sexual dysfunction were assessed with the Australian Pelvic Floor Questionnaire (APFQ). Drivers and barriers were based on the Barriers to Incontinence Care Seeking Questionnaire. Univariate analyses were used to assess any significant relationships between PFD, age, education level, self-reported PFD, barriers and drivers. Results: Of the 376 study participants [mean, standard deviation (SD) age 68.6 (10.5) years], 67% reported symptoms of PFD and 98.7% scored > 0 on the APFQ. Women were more likely to seek help if they scored higher on the APFQ (p < 0.001). The main barrier to seeking help was the perception that PFD was a normal part of ageing (22.4%). Of those who did seek help (50%), the main factor was increased level of symptom bother (51.4%). There was no difference in age or education level between women who did and did not seek help. Conclusion: Women are more likely to seek help for PFD if scoring higher on the APFQ or symptoms are becoming more bothersome. They are less likely to seek help if they view their symptoms as normal. Future direction should be taken to raise awareness of normal pelvic floor function as well as the availability of help for PFD

    Sexual Health and Well-being Among Older Men and Women in England: Findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

    We describe levels of sexual activity, problems with sexual functioning, and concerns about sexual health among older adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), and associations with age, health, and partnership factors. Specifically, a total of 6,201 core ELSA participants (56 % women) aged 50 to >90 completed a comprehensive Sexual Relationships and Activities questionnaire (SRA-Q) included in ELSA Wave 6 (2012/13). The prevalence of reporting any sexual activity in the last year declined with age, with women less likely than men at all ages to report being sexually active. Poorer health was associated with lower levels of sexual activity and a higher prevalence of problems with sexual functioning, particularly among men. Difficulties most frequently reported by sexually active women related to becoming sexually aroused (32 %) and achieving orgasm (27 %), while for men it was erectile function (39 %). Sexual health concerns most commonly reported by women related to their level of sexual desire (11 %) and frequency of sexual activities (8 %). Among men it was level of sexual desire (15 %) and erectile difficulties (14 %). While the likelihood of reporting sexual health concerns tended to decrease with age in women, the opposite was seen in men. Poor sexual functioning and disagreements with a partner about initiating and/or feeling obligated to have sex were associated with greater concerns about and dissatisfaction with overall sex life. Levels of sexual activity decline with increasing age, although a sizable minority of men and women remain sexually active until the eighth and ninth decades of life. Problems with sexual functioning were relatively common, but overall levels of sexual health concerns were much lower. Sexually active men reported higher levels of concern with their sexual health and sexual dissatisfaction than women at all ages. Older peoples’ sexual health should be managed, not just in the context of their age, gender, and general health, but also within their existing sexual relationship

    Mechanism of stress relaxation and phase transformation in additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V via in situ high temperature XRD and TEM analyses

    Additive manufacturing is being increasingly used in the fabrication of Ti-6Al-4V parts to combine excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility with high precision. Unfortunately, due to the build-up of thermal residual stresses and the formation of martensitic structure across a wide range of typical processing conditions, it is generally necessary to use a post-thermal treatment to achieve superior mechanical performance. This investigation aims to obtain a deeper understanding of the microManostructural evolution (alpha' martensite phase decomposition), accounting for the kinetics of phase transformation during the heat treatment of 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. As the mechanism of phase transformation and stress relaxation is still ambiguous, in this study the changes in crystal lattice, phase, composition and lattice strain were investigated up to 1000 degrees C using both in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Based on the result a mechanism of phase transformation is proposed, via the accommodation/substitution of Al, V and Ti atoms in the crystal lattice. The proposed mechanism is supported based on elemental concentration changes during heat treatment, in combination with changes in crystal structure observed using the high temperature XRD and TEM measurements. This study provides a deeper understanding on the mechanism of phase transformation through martensitic decomposition, as well as a deeper understanding of the influence of post-thermal treatment conditions on the alloy's crystal structure.     Photoabsorption and photoion spectroscopy of atomic uranium in the region of 6p and 5d excitations

    The photoabsorption process in atomic uranium has been investigated experimentally and theoretically in the 15–150-eV region. Using the dual laser plasma technique, the 6p photoabsorption spectrum has been recorded while for the first time the 5d region has been remeasured photoelectrically using both photoabsorption and photoion spectroscopy. Interpretation of the photoabsorption spectra is supported by Hartree-Fock calculations which take into account spin-flip decay and the interaction of many discrete states with many continua. The 6p spectrum is entirely dominated by spin-orbit split 6p⃗6d transitions. The 5d-subshell photoabsorption is shown to consist predominantly of discrete 5d⃗5f excitations; here the electrostatic and spin-orbit interactions are comparable in strength

    ‘Wellness’ lifts us above the Food Chaos’: a narrative exploration of the experiences and conceptualisations of Orthorexia Nervosa through online social media forums

    The increasing prevalence of eating disorders has motivated a burgeoning of research from narrative methods to illuminate the cultural and social aspects of disordered eating habits. A seemingly new eating disorder, Orthorexia Nervosa, has gained visibility through the internet sphere and popular media, though scholarly attention has been scarce. This study develops qualitative understandings of the fixation with ‘clean eating’ through narrative inquiry by employing an internet ethnographic approach. Data were analysed using a thematic narrative analysis, focusing on parallels and divergences across narratives presented online. This article presents 30 male and female voices, illustrating how these individuals understand their eating habits through narratives of pursuit, resistance and recovery, which are largely motivated by the desire for physical, emotional and social change. Crucially, this study illuminates a range of cultural elements enabling eating disorders in response to the transmission of cultural values online set within the broader context and processes of reflexive-modernisation

    Even-parity autoionizing states in the extreme-ultraviolet photoabsorption spectra of Mg, Al⁺, and Si²⁺

    The dual-laser-produced plasma (DLP) photoabsorption technique has been used to study 2p→3s excitations in the isoelectronic species Mg, Al+, and Si2+ prepared in the excited configuration 2p63s3p. The autoionizing upper states belong to the 2p53s23p even-parity configuration. The versatility of the technique is demonstrated through a careful combination of space- and time-resolved photoabsorption scans. Plasma conditions optimized for the observation of the inaccessible parity regime were successfully reproduced along the isoelectronic sequence of interest. All the observed transitions were interpreted with the help of multiconfigurational atomic structure calculations. In the case of magnesium, the photoabsorption data are compared with the ejected-electron spectra excited by low-energy electron impact of Pejcev et al. [J. Phys. B 10, 2389 (1977)]
