    Transparent-Influx Boundary Conditions for FEM Based Modelling of 2D Helmholtz Problems in Optics

    A numerical method for the analysis of the 2D Helmholtz equation is presented, which incorporates Transparent-Influx Boundary Conditions into a variational formulation of the Helmholtz problem. For rectangular geometries, the non-locality of those boundaries can be efficiently handled by using Fourier decomposition. The Finite Element Method is used to discretise the interior and the nonlocal Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators arising from the formulation of Transparent-Influx Boundary Conditions

    Adenovirus-mediated correction of the genetic defect in hepatocytes from patients with familial hypercholesterolemia

    Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited deficiency of LDL receptors that has been an important model for liver-directed gene therapy. We are developing approaches for treating FH that are based on direct delivery of recombinant LDL receptor genes to liver in vivo. As a first step towards this goal, replication-defective recombinant adenoviruses were constructed which contained either the lacZ gene or the human LDL receptor cDNA expressed from a β-actin promoter. Primary cultures of hepatocytes were established from two patients with homozygous FH and one nonFH patient, and subsequently exposed to recombinant adenoviruses at MOIs ranging from 0.1 to 5. Essentially all of the cells expressed high levels of the transgene without demonstrable expression of an early or late adenoviral gene product; the level of recombinant-derived LDL receptor protein in transduced FH hepatocytes exceeded the endogenous levels by at least 20-fold.     Basin-wide variations in Amazon forest structure and function are mediated by both soils and climate

    Forest structure and dynamics vary across the Amazon Basin in an east-west gradient coincident with variations in soil fertility and geology. This has resulted in the hypothesis that soil fertility may play an important role in explaining Basin-wide variations in forest biomass, growth and stem turnover rates. Soil samples were collected in a total of 59 different forest plots across the Amazon Basin and analysed for exchangeable cations, carbon, nitrogen and pH, with several phosphorus fractions of likely different plant availability also quantified. Physical properties were additionally examined and an index of soil physical quality developed. Bivariate relationships of soil and climatic properties with above-ground wood productivity, stand-level tree turnover rates, above-ground wood biomass and wood density were first examined with multivariate regression models then applied. Both forms of analysis were undertaken with and without considerations regarding the underlying spatial structure of the dataset. Despite the presence of autocorrelated spatial structures complicating many analyses, forest structure and dynamics were found to be strongly and quantitatively related to edaphic as well as climatic conditions. Basin-wide differences in stand-level turnover rates are mostly influenced by soil physical properties with variations in rates of coarse wood production mostly related to soil phosphorus status. Total soil P was a better predictor of wood production rates than any of the fractionated organic- or inorganic-P pools. This suggests that it is not only the immediately available P forms, but probably the entire soil phosphorus pool that is interacting with forest growth on longer timescales. A role for soil potassium in modulating Amazon forest dynamics through its effects on stand-level wood density was also detected. Taking this into account, otherwise enigmatic variations in stand-level biomass across the Basin were then accounted for through the interacting effects of soil physical and chemical properties with climate. A hypothesis of self-maintaining forest dynamic feedback mechanisms initiated by edaphic conditions is proposed. It is further suggested that this is a major factor determining endogenous disturbance levels, species composition, and forest productivity across the Amazon Basin. © 2012 Author(s).     Os M. pretenderam traçar um quadro da História da Alimentação, não como um novo ramo epistemológico da disciplina, mas como um campo em desenvolvimento de práticas e atividades especializadas, incluindo pesquisa, formação, publicações, associações, encontros acadêmicos, etc. Um breve relato das condições em que tal campo se assentou faz-se preceder de um panorama dos estudos de alimentação e temas correia tos, em geral, segundo cinco abardagens Ia biológica, a econômica, a social, a cultural e a filosófica!, assim como da identificação das contribuições mais relevantes da Antropologia, Arqueologia, Sociologia e Geografia. A fim de comentar a multiforme e volumosa bibliografia histórica, foi ela organizada segundo critérios morfológicos. A seguir, alguns tópicos importantes mereceram tratamento à parte: a fome, o alimento e o domínio religioso, as descobertas européias e a difusão mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia. O artigo se encerra com um rápido balanço crítico da historiografia brasileira sobre o tema

    We present a hybrid analytic-numeric method to calculate the transmission and reflection of light that is fluxed into a bounded complicated optical structure surrounded by air. The solution is obtained by numerical calculations inside a square containing the structure and by analytical calculations outside the square. For solving the 2D Helmholtz equation we formulate transparent-influx boundary conditions (TIBCs) on the boundaries of the square; these are incorporated into a variational formulation of the Helmholtz equation to obtain a FEM-implementation for the interior calculations
