    A Model Predictive Path Integral Method for Fast, Proactive, and Uncertainty-Aware UAV Planning in Cluttered Environments

    Current motion planning approaches for autonomous mobile robots often assume that the low level controller of the system is able to track the planned motion with very high accuracy. In practice, however, tracking error can be affected by many factors, and could lead to potential collisions when the robot must traverse a cluttered environment. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel receding-horizon motion planning approach based on Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) control theory -- a flexible sampling-based control technique that requires minimal assumptions on vehicle dynamics and cost functions. This flexibility is leveraged to propose a motion planning framework that also considers a data-informed risk function. Using the MPPI algorithm as a motion planner also reduces the number of samples required by the algorithm, relaxing the hardware requirements for implementation. The proposed approach is validated through trajectory generation for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), where fast motion increases trajectory tracking error and can lead to collisions with nearby obstacles. Simulations and hardware experiments demonstrate that the MPPI motion planner proactively adapts to the obstacles that the UAV must negotiate, slowing down when near obstacles and moving quickly when away from obstacles, resulting in a complete reduction of collisions while still producing lively motion.Comment: Accepted to IROS 2023, 8 page

    Radiation-induced prodrug activation: extending combined modality therapy for some solid tumours

    Combined chemoradiotherapy is the standard of care for locally advanced solid tumours. However, systemic toxicity may limit the delivery of planned chemotherapy. New approaches such as radiation-induced prodrug activation might diminish systemic toxicity, while retaining anticancer benefit. Organic azides have recently been shown to be reduced and activated under hypoxic conditions with clinically relevant doses of radiotherapy, uncaging pazopanib and doxorubicin in preclinical models with similar efficacy as the drug, but lower systemic toxicity. This approach may be relevant to the chemoradiation of glioblastoma and other solid tumours and offers potential for switching on drug delivery from implanted devices. The inclusion of reporters to confirm drug activation, avoidance of off-target effects and synchronisation of irradiation with optimal intratumoral drug concentration will be critical. Further preclinical validation studies of this approach should be encouraged

    The Portico Library and its lawyer subscribers 1806 – 1850

    This study considers a group of proprietors of the Portico Library and Newsroom (the Portico) who were connected to the legal profession and who all held a share in the Portico at some point in the period from its establishment in 1806 until c.1850. Its intention is to further our understanding of why Portico members may have chosen to associate themselves with this particular cultural institution during their professional working lives, in order to draw conclusions more widely about the Portico’s attraction and significance in Manchester in the first forty years of its existence. This group has not been considered in its own right previously. This study seeks to fill in that gap and argues that, against a backdrop of significant development and change in Manchester and by reference to their activities and interests identified in this study, this group merits attention in its own right and has something of interest to tell us about Manchester, its middle classes and its cultural development in this period. All of the individuals considered in this study held their share at a point in time in which they were professionally active. Far from representing a retired gentleman’s means of spending their leisure time, this study argues that the Portico served both a philosophical and practical purpose for its lawyer members. It can be said to have provided a blue-print for cultural and other institutions which came after it and the conclusions reached in this regard inform us more widely about its significance in Manchester

    The relationship between zinc intake and serum/plasma zinc concentration in adults: a systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis by the EURRECA Network

    Dietary zinc recommendations vary widely across Europe due to the heterogeneity of pproaches used by expert panels. Under the EURRECA consortium a protocol was designed to systematically review and undertake meta-analyses of research data to create a database that includes “best practice” guidelines which can be used as a resource by future panels when setting micronutrient recommendations. As part of this process, the objective of the present study was to undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis of previously published data describing the relationship between zinc intake and status in adults. Searches were performed of literature published up to February 2010 using MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Data extracted included population characteristics, dose of zinc, duration of study, dietary intake of zinc, and mean concentration of zinc in plasma or serum at the end of the intervention period. An intake-status regression coefficient was estimated for each individual study, and pooled meta-analysis undertaken. The overall pooled for zinc supplementation on serum/plasma zinc concentrations from RCTs and observational studies was 0.08 (95% CI 0.05, 0.11; p<0.0001; I2 84.5%). An overall of 0.08 means that for every doubling in zinc intake, the difference in zinc serum or plasma concentration is (20.08 = 1.06), which is 6%. Whether the dose-response relationship, as provided in this paper, could be used as either qualitative or quantitative evidence to substantiate the daily zinc intake dose necessary to achieve normal or optimal levels of biomarkers for zinc status, remains a matter of discussion

    Quality interoperability within digital libraries: the DL.org perspective

    Quality is the most dynamic aspect of DLs, and becomes even more complex with respect to interoperability. This paper formalizes the research motivations and hypotheses on quality interoperability conducted by the Quality Working Group within the EU-funded project DL.org (&lt;a href="http://www.dlorg.eu"&gt;http://www.dlorg.eu/&lt;/a&gt;). After providing a multi-level interoperability framework – adopted by DL.org - the authors illustrate key-research points and approaches on the way to the interoperability of DLs quality, grounding them in the DELOS Reference Model. By applying the DELOS Reference Model Quality Concept Map to their interoperability motivating scenario, the authors subsequently present the two main research outcomes of their investigation - the Quality Core Model and the Quality Interoperability Survey

    Enhanced Electron Pairing in a Lattice of Berry Phase Molecules

    We show that electron hopping in a lattice of molecules possessing a Berry phase naturally leads to pairing. Our building block is a simple molecular site model inspired by C60_{60}, but realized in closer similarity with Na3_3. In the resulting model electron hopping must be accompanied by orbital operators, whose function is to switch on and off the Berry phase as the electron number changes. The effective hamiltonians (electron-rotor and electron-pseudospin) obtained in this way are then shown to exhibit a strong pairing phenomenon, by means of 1D linear chain case studies. This emerges naturally from numerical studies of small NN-site rings, as well as from a BCS-like mean-field theory formulation. The pairing may be explained as resulting from the exchange of singlet pairs of orbital excitations, and is intimately connected with the extra degeneracy implied by the Berry phase when the electron number is odd. The relevance of this model to fullerides, to other molecular superconductors, as well as to present and future experiments, is discussed.Comment: 30 pages, RevTe
