Dependence of boundary lubrication on the misfit angle between the sliding surfaces
Using molecular dynamics based on Langevin equations with a coordinate- and
velocity-dependent damping coefficient, we study the frictional properties of a
thin layer of "soft" lubricant (where the interaction within the lubricant is
weaker than the lubricant-substrate interaction) confined between two solids.
At low driving velocities the system demonstrates stick-slip motion. The
lubricant may or may not be melted during sliding, thus exhibiting either the
"liquid sliding" (LS) or the "layer over layer sliding" (LoLS) regimes. The
LoLS regime mainly operates at low sliding velocities. We investigate the
dependence of friction properties on the misfit angle between the sliding
surfaces and calculate the distribution of static frictional thresholds for a
contact of polycrystalline surfaces.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure
On localization and position operators in Moebius-covariant theories
Some years ago it was shown that, in some cases, a notion of locality can
arise from the group of symmetry enjoyed by the theory, thus in an intrinsic
way. In particular, when Moebius covariance is present, it is possible to
associate some particular transformations to the Tomita Takesaki modular
operator and conjugation of a specific interval of an abstract circle. In this
context we propose a way to define an operator representing the coordinate
conjugated with the modular transformations. Remarkably this coordinate turns
out to be compatible with the abstract notion of locality. Finally a concrete

A Critique of the Use of the Balanced Scorecard in Multi-Enterprise Family Farm Businesses
Business strategy is very important to small and medium family businesses as many are both fragile and vulnerable; strategy provides a solid foundation for survival. Various studies have identified that businesses that engage in strategic management outperform those that do not. Despite this knowledge the uptake of many aspects of strategic management by farm businesses has been slow. Although the development of business plans is now common there is often a disconnect between monitoring and strategy. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) was applied to case study farms during both the planning process and as they implemented and controlled their strategic choices to determine areas of difference that restrict or enhance it as a management tool for both family and farming businesses. The BSC was immediately applicable in the strategic management process for those businesses with current business plans. It could be used to test the degree of balance between the goals already identified in their plans. It was able to be used to critique the control measures they had in place and to determine how well they could be used to derive the causal chain from the operational level to family goals. In some instances either outcome or driver measures were recognized as being missing, in others the wiring within the balanced scorecard revealed some strategic measures without linkages.Farm Management,
Unlocking the deployment of spectrum sharing with a policy enforcement framework
Spectrum sharing has been proposed as a promising way to increase the efficiency of spectrum usage by allowing incumbent operators (IOs) to share their allocated radio resources with licensee operators (LOs), under a set of agreed rules. The goal is to maximize a common utility, such as the sum rate throughput, while maintaining the level of service required by the IOs. However, this is only guaranteed under the assumption that all “players”respect the agreed sharing rules. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive framework for licensed shared access (LSA) networks that discourages LO misbehavior. Our framework is built around three core functions: misbehavior detection via the employment of a dedicated sensing network; a penalization function; and, a behavior-driven resource allocation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that these components are combined for the monitoring/policing of the spectrum under the LSA framework. Moreover, a novel simulator for LSA is provided as an open access tool, serving the purpose of testing and validating our proposed techniques via a set of extensive system-level simulations in the context of mobile network operators, where IOs and several competing LOs are considered. The results demonstrate that violation of the agreed sharing rules can lead to a great loss of resources for the misbehaving LOs, the amount of which is controlled by the system. Finally, we promote that including a policy enforcement function as part of the spectrum sharing system can be beneficial for the LSA system, since it can guarantee compliance with the spectrum sharing rules and limit the short-term benefits arising from misbehavior
Closed-Loop Targeted Memory Reactivation during Sleep Improves Spatial Navigation
Sounds associated with newly learned information that are replayed during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep can improve recall in simple tasks. The mechanism for this improvement is presumed to be reactivation of the newly learned memory during sleep when consolidation takes place. We have developed an EEG-based closed-loop system to precisely deliver sensory stimulation at the time of down-state to up-state transitions during NREM sleep. Here, we demonstrate that applying this technology to participants performing a realistic navigation task in virtual reality results in a significant improvement in navigation efficiency after sleep that is accompanied by increases in the spectral power especially in the fast (12\u201315 Hz) sleep spindle band. Our results show promise for the application of sleep-based interventions to drive improvement in real-world tasks
Conormal distributions in the Shubin calculus of pseudodifferential operators
We characterize the Schwartz kernels of pseudodifferential operators of
Shubin type by means of an FBI transform. Based on this we introduce as a
generalization a new class of tempered distributions called Shubin conormal
distributions. We study their transformation behavior, normal forms and

Jahn-Teller Spectral Fingerprint in Molecular Photoemission: C60
The h_u hole spectral intensity for C60 -> C60+ molecular photoemission is
calculated at finite temperature by a parameter-free Lanczos diagonalization of
the electron-vibration Hamiltonian, including the full 8 H_g, 6 G_g, and 2 A_g
mode couplings. The computed spectrum at 800 K is in striking agreement with
gas-phase data. The energy separation of the first main shoulder from the main
photoemission peak, 230 meV in C60, is shown to measure directly and rather
generally the strength of the final-state Jahn-Teller coupling.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Spectral centrality measures in complex networks
Complex networks are characterized by heterogeneous distributions of the
degree of nodes, which produce a large diversification of the roles of the
nodes within the network. Several centrality measures have been introduced to
rank nodes based on their topological importance within a graph. Here we review
and compare centrality measures based on spectral properties of graph matrices.
We shall focus on PageRank, eigenvector centrality and the hub/authority scores
of HITS. We derive simple relations between the measures and the (in)degree of
the nodes, in some limits. We also compare the rankings obtained with different

The role of the Berry Phase in Dynamical Jahn-Teller Systems
The presence/absence of a Berry phase depends on the topology of the manifold
of dynamical Jahn-Teller potential minima. We describe in detail the relation
between these topological properties and the way the lowest two adiabatic
potential surfaces get locally degenerate. We illustrate our arguments through
spherical generalizations of the linear T x h and H x h cases, relevant for the
physics of fullerene ions. Our analysis allows us to classify all the spherical
Jahn-Teller systems with respect to the Berry phase. Its absence can, but does
