    In this paper, we introduce a framework based on the capability approach of Amartya Sen as a base to analyse the concept of disability in a dynamic context for the disabled person. In the first part the base for equality among human beings is discussed and a critical review of disability models presented. In the following part the concept of disability is redefined throughout the capability approach. The second part of the paper introduces new concepts in the capability approach framework. The aim is to try to explain the dynamics among expectation, adaptation, and change for a disabled person in the evaluative space of capabilities.Disability Studies; Capability Approach

    Heart failure is a growing disease that affects millions of people around the world. Heart transplantation is currently the therapy of choice for these patients. However, the lack of donors has forced the physician to evolve another kind of therapy such as ventricular assist device (VAD) as a bridge to transplant to compensate the lack of organs. Ventricular assist devices are today a successful therapy for the treatment of heart failure; the evolution of these devices and their progressive miniaturization have allowed an evolution of their implantation technique. To date, therefore, in addition to the traditional implant through sternotomy, there are more mini-invasive implant techniques.     A CSI Dataset for Wireless Human Sensing on 80 MHz Wi-Fi Channels

    In the last years, several machine learning-based techniques have been proposed to monitor human movements from Wi-Fi channel readings. However, the development of domain-adaptive algorithms that robustly work across different environments is still an open problem, whose solution requires large datasets characterized by strong domain diversity, in terms of environments, persons and Wi-Fi hardware. To date, the few public datasets available are mostly obsolete - as obtained via Wi-Fi devices operating on 20 or 40 MHz bands - and contain little or no domain diversity, thus dramatically limiting the advancements in the design of sensing algorithms. The present contribution aims to fill this gap by providing a dataset of IEEE 802.11 ac channel measurements over an 80 MHz bandwidth channel featuring notable domain diversity, through measurement campaigns that involved thirteen subjects across different environments, days, and with different hardware. Novel experimental data is provided by blocking the direct path between the transmitter and the monitor, and collecting measurements in a semi-anechoic chamber (no multi-path fading). Overall, the dataset - available on IEEE DataPort [1] - contains more than thirteen hours of channel state information readings (23.6 GB), allowing researchers to test activity/identity recognition and people counting algorithms

    Dandruff is a common condition, generally due to seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and occasionally to scalp psoriasis (SP), which is characterized by accumulation of scales, oily, red and flaky scalp, often accompanied by itch. The aim of our study was to evaluate the cleansing efficacy and tolerability of a new shampoo (Psorisdin Shampoo®) containing urea, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, ichthyol pale and laureth 9 compared to a nonspecific shampoo. A total of 10 subjects (4 males and 6 females, 18–60 years) with mild–moderate scalp inflammation with redness, itching and flaking, due to SP and/or SD, were included in this open clinical study. The treatment efficacy was assessed by comparison of global photography and trichoscopy pictures, evaluating the presence of scales and erythema on the scalp, the number and morphology of capillaries and verifying disease evolution, severity of symptoms and presence of scalp irritation/itch. The use of this medicated shampoo resulted in an important improvement of patient's scalp and hair clinical appearance and was well tolerated, with disappearance of scalp irritation and itching in almost all patients, showing higher cleansing and soothing property than a nonspecific shampoo.     Enhanced Anti-Fouling Behavior and Performance of PES Membrane by UV Treatment

    An easy method to prepare hydrophilic PES membranes with anti-fouling properties was developed by UV-polymerization of poly vinyl pirrolidone (PVP) on membrane surfaces. The modified membrane surfaces were analyzed by ATR-FTIR, and the new hydrophilic nature of the membranes was determined by contact angle measurements. The novel membranes were prepared using Rhodiasolv® Polarclean as a green solvent and compared with a control PES membrane, without the exposure at the hydrophilization procedure. The influences of the UV lamp distance (15 and 30 cm) and the exposure time (0 cm to 60 cm) were evaluated. All membranes were characterized in terms of surface morphology, porosity, pore size, and pure water permeability (PWP). The treated membranes resulted in an increase in hydrophilicity and in improved performances in terms of PWP and foulant rejection. In particular, an anti-fouling test was performed using a solution of 100 mg/L of humic acid (HA) as a model foulant. The UV-treated membrane efficiency, compared with a commercial PES membrane, showed a recovery of about 97%, confirming that these membranes can be applied in wastewater treatment

    Eating disorders in young patients with neurofibromatosis type 1

    Aim: We describe the association of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and feeding and eating disorders (FED) in five patients admitted to our third level centre for both FED and NF1. Methods: Case series of five adolescent females with NF1 treated for FED. Results: We collected data from five patients with NF1 aged between 14 and 22 years, all females. The onset of eating disorder symptoms occurred between 13 and 19 years of age and was characterised by food intake restriction, associated with physical hyperactivity in three out of five cases. One patient also reported self-injurious acts and episodic binges. Patients received diagnoses of anorexia nervosa (AN, n = 2), atypical AN (n = 1), bulimia nervosa (n = 1), unspecified feeding and eating disorder (n = 1). Conclusion: The current literature reports a single case of an adult with NF1 and comorbid AN, focusing on the dermatological features of NF1. Our article describes a case series of five patients in developmental age affected by NF1 and FED. Clinical and psychological features of NF1 may play a role in the pathogenesis of FED when these two conditions co-occur. The dermatological alterations of NF1 may contribute to body image distortion that characterises AN. Further research is required to systematically screen populations of patients with NF1 for the presence of FED

    Low doses of lactoferrin supplementation in weaning calves

    Different trials demonstrated lactoferrin (LF) to possess antimicrobial, antiviral, antimycotic and anti-inflammatory activity. This molecule is an iron-binding protein that could have preventive effects on calf diseases. Several authors studied the effects of LF at doses between 1 and 10 g/calf/day as a supplement in milk administrated to weaning calves. The results are variable and not always consistent. Twenty-two female replacement calves divided into 2 groups (Control-C and Treated-LF) during a 56-d experimental period were employed to investigate the effect of the use of 0.1 g/d of LF during weaning on growth performances, feed efficiency and health status. The field trial was conducted employing an early weaning protocol (49-d of length, excluding the colostral phase). After parturition, density and immunoglobulin G (IgG) content of dam colostrum were measured as a colostrum quality indicator. Only colostrum with at least 50 mg/mL of IgG was bottle-fed to the calf. Morphometric measurements and feedstuff intake were recorded weekly. Health status and milk consumption were evaluated daily. Calves receiving low doses of LF had numerically less incidence of diarrhoea than the C group (P > 0.05). From a statistical point of view, any significant difference was observed between groups both on growth performances and feed efficiency. A trend for an increase of the FCR was found for LF group at weaning (P = 0.099). More researches are needed to define the optimal dose and the real action of LF in weaning calves

    Design of a sensor network for the quantitative analysis of sport climbing

    We describe the design of a modular sensorized climbing wall for motion analysis in a naturalistic environment. The wall is equipped with force sensors to measure interaction forces between the athlete and the wall, which can be used by experienced instructors, athletes, or therapists, to gain insights into the quality of motion. A specifically designed triaxial load cell is integrated into each hold placement, invisible to the climber, and compatible with standard climbing holds. Data collected through the sensors is sent to an app running on a portable device. The wall can be adapted to different uses. To validate our design, we recorded a repeated climbing activity of eleven climbers with varying degrees of expertise. Analysis of the interaction forces during the exercise demonstrates that the sensor network design can provide valuable information to track and analyze exercise performance changes over time.     Dermal regeneration template: reconstruction in oral cancer defects

    BackgroundPost ablative oral mucosal defect resulting from the removal of tumors can be treated with various techniques.PurposeIn this paper, we are showing what, in our experience, are the advantages and disadvantages given using biosynthetic skin substitutes when dealing with this kind of lesions.Materials and methodsPatients included in the sample came to our attention with both neoplastic lesions (11 subjects) and important scar retraction after previous oncologic surgery (1 subject). All patients underwent trans-oral resection surgery following the same surgical protocol and post ablative oral mucosal defect were treated using the dermal regeneration template. The surgical defect location, size, and time of removal of the silicone layer varied from one subject to the other.ResultsMost patients showed good healing with reduced scarring and adequate remucosalisation of the defect. The main complications were shown in a palatal lesion treated with concomitant osteal resection, which developed an oroantral fistula at follow up, and tongue lesions which showed some scarring.ConclusionsGiven our experience, we would advise using dermal substitutes when reconstructing oral defects only after a cautious evaluation of the area of the lesion, the gap size, the possible adherence of the membrane to the gap, and the presence of tissue supporting the overlying membrane
