Autonomous Wildfire Detection System

According to the National Fire Protection Association Journal, federal wildfire suppression costs in the United States have risen from an annual average of about $425 million from 1985 to 1999 up to$1.6 billion from 2000 to 2019. On average, more than 200,000 acres in the United States are burned per year due to wildfires, with more than 700,000 acres burned in 2020 alone. With the risk of wildfire ever rising, there is a need for better early detection of remote wildfires, as existing methods often include long delays like satellites or rely on human lookout towers. The objective is to develop an early, remote wildfire detection device that covers a wide range and quickly transmits warnings to appropriate personnel. The device will be wireless and self-powered as to facilitate deployment in remote areas. In practice there would be a network of these detection units communicating back to a gateway in order to cover a wide area of land in order to help catch wildfires early

U of M SolarCar Chassis Manufacturing Optimization

ME450 Capstone Design and Manufacturing Experience: Winter 2015The University of Michigan Solar Car is designing a solar-powered vehicle that will be racing at speeds of over 100kph in Australia for the 2015 World Solar Challenge. In order to keep the driver safe and support the suspension loads at these speeds, the team designs its cars around a central, structural chassis box. This chassis is currently made of a number of smaller components produced of carbon fiber and other materials which are then bonded together to form a structural single piece monocoque chassis. The existing method of manufacturing the various components involves creating female negative fiberglass molds from male positive polyurethane molds. Composite plies are hand-laid into the molds, cured to make parts, and then trimmed by hand. All of the components are then attached using a team standard bonding procedure. The goal of this project is to identify or develop a method of manufacturing and assembling the chassis system to decrease manufacturing time from the current 8 weeks down to 3 weeks. Potential items for the project to investigate include, but are not limited to: mold design and manufacturing methods; chassis designs; and bonding procedure and materials selection. Loneliness in men 60 years and over : the association with purpose in life

Loneliness as a consequence of getting older negatively impacts on the health and well-being of men as they age. Having a purpose in life may mitigate loneliness and therefore positively impact on health and well-being. Limited research into loneliness and purpose in life has been undertaken in older men. This study seeks to understand the relationship between loneliness and purpose in life in a group of older men. Using data from a cross-sectional survey of 614 men aged 60 years and over living in New Zealand, bivariate and multivariate analyses were undertaken to examine the relationship between loneliness and purpose in life using a range of demographic, health, and social connection variables. Bivariate analysis revealed that being unpartnered and having low socioeconomic status, limited social networks, low levels of participation, and mental health issues were associated with loneliness. Multivariate analysis showed that having poor mental health and lower purpose in life were indicators of loneliness. Consequently, improving mental health and purpose in life are likely to reduce loneliness in at-risk older men. As older men are a heterogeneous group from a variety of sociocultural and ethnic backgrounds, a multidimensional approach to any intervention initiatives needs to occur

Main-Belt Comet P/2012 T1 (PANSTARRS)

We present initial results from observations and numerical analyses aimed at characterizing main-belt comet P/2012 T1 (PANSTARRS). Optical monitoring observations were made between October 2012 and February 2013 using the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope, the Keck I telescope, the Baade and Clay Magellan telescopes, Faulkes Telescope South, the Perkins Telescope at Lowell Observatory, and the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope. The object's intrinsic brightness approximately doubles from the time of its discovery in early October until mid-November and then decreases by ~60% between late December and early February, similar to photometric behavior exhibited by several other main-belt comets and unlike that exhibited by disrupted asteroid (596) Scheila. We also used Keck to conduct spectroscopic searches for CN emission as well as absorption at 0.7 microns that could indicate the presence of hydrated minerals, finding an upper limit CN production rate of QCN<1.5x10^23 mol/s, from which we infer a water production rate of QH2O<5x10^25 mol/s, and no evidence of the presence of hydrated minerals. Numerical simulations indicate that P/2012 T1 is largely dynamically stable for >100 Myr and is unlikely to be a recently implanted interloper from the outer solar system, while a search for potential asteroid family associations reveal that it is dynamically linked to the ~155 Myr-old Lixiaohua asteroid family.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Gaining insight from future mothers : A survey of attitudes and perspectives of childbirth

Design: A cross-sectional survey was used to determine if fear of birth could be profiled in specific participant characteristics and birth choices. Setting: Urban New Zealand university. Participants: A convenience sample of women (final n = 339) who were 20 (‘severe’) for depression on DASS-21 scale (n=11, mean CFPP=44.8, SE=1.7, p < 0.0001) were all positively associated with CFPP. Post-hoc analyses revealed that mean CFPP was higher for those that perceived birth technologies as easier, safer, necessary, and required. Conclusions: Women born outside of New Zealand and/or suffering ‘severe’ depression were more likely to have a fear of birth. Fear of birth was associated with the participants choices towards medicalised childbirth. Familiarising women with the provision of maternity care in New Zealand and identifying mental health status early could reduce fear of birth and possibly support the vaginal birth intentions of future parents.Peer reviewe

Imprisonment following discharge from mental health units: A developing trend in New Zealand

IntroductionContemporary models of care for people with mental disorders continue to shift to community-based care, requiring fewer inpatient mental health beds, shorter inpatient lengths of stay, and less use of coercion. It has been suggested that some mentally unwell people, whose behavior can no longer be safely contained in overstretched mental health units where seclusion and restraint are discouraged, are now left to the criminal justice system to manage. It is unclear whether the risk of imprisonment following discharge from a mental health unit has increased over recent years.MethodsA quantitative, retrospective cohort study design was used to investigate any association between an acute inpatient mental health service admission in Aotearoa (New Zealand), and referral to a prison mental health team within 28 days of hospital discharge, from 2012 to 2020. Data were extracted from the national mental health dataset managed by the Ministry of Health.ResultsRisk of imprisonment within 28 days of inpatient discharge increased over the study period. People experiencing this outcome were more likely to be younger, male, of Mâori or Pacific ethnicity, presenting with substance use and psychotic disorders who were aggressive or overactive, and were subject to coercive interventions such as seclusion and compulsory treatment during their admission.DiscussionWe concluded that contemporary models of less coercive predominantly community based mental health care may be increasingly reliant on the criminal justice system to manage aggressive and violent behavior driven by mental illness. It is argued from a human rights perspective that mental health inpatient units should retain the capacity to safely manage this type of clinical presentation

BackgroundHodgkin's disease (HD) most commonly presents with progressive painless enlargement of peripheral lymph nodes, especially around the cervical region. A few children have systemic symptoms and weight loss. At the time of diagnosis, osseous involvement is uncommonCase presentationA case is described of Primary Multifocal Osseous Hodgkin's Lymphoma in a seven-year-old boy. He presented with a painful swelling in the sternum, and further investigations revealed deposits in his L1 vertebra, the left sacro-iliac joint and the right acetabulum.ConclusionThe clinical, radiological and histological features of this disease can mimic other medical conditions, including Tuberculosis, making the diagnosis difficult and often leading to delays in treatment. This is a very rare condition and we believe this to be the youngest reported case in the literature
