    Morphic and principal-ideal group rings

    Get PDF
We observe that the class of left and right artinian left and right morphic rings agrees with the class of artinian principal ideal rings. For RR an artinian principal ideal ring and GG a group, we characterize when RGRG is a principal ideal ring; for finite groups GG, this characterizes when RGRG is a left and right morphic ring. This extends work of Passman, Sehgal and Fisher in the case when RR is a field, and work of Chen, Li, and Zhou on morphic group rings.Comment: 21 page

SUMS experiment flight results on STS-35

    Get PDF
Calibrated pressure measurements for species with mass to charge ratios up to 50 amu/e(-) were obtained from the Shuttle Upper Atmosphere Mass Spectrometer (SUMS) experiment during reentry on the STS-35 mission. Data were collected from 180 km, when the signal rose above the background, to about 87 km, when the SUMS system automatically closed the gas inlet value. However, data above 115 km was contaminated from a source of gas emanating from pressure transducers connected in parallel to the mass spectrometer. At lower altitudes, the pressure transducer data is compared with the mass spectrometer total pressure with excellent agreement. The free-stream density in the rarefied flow flight regime is calculated using an orifice pressure coefficient model based upon direct simulation Monte Carlo results. This density, when compared with the 1976 U.S. standard atmosphere model, exhibits the wave-like nature seen on previous flights using accelerometry. In addition, selected spectra are presented at higher altitudes (320 km) showing the effects of the ingestion of gases from a forward fuselage fuel dump. An analysis of the spectra data from this event is presented to show that no significant permanent changes occurred which affected the data interpretation at lower altitudes. Further, the localized chemistry from the individual species during the onset of aerodynamic heating is examined to the extent possible for a closed source system, such as SUMS. Near the orifice entrance, a significant amount of CO2 was generated from chemical reactions with the carbon panels of the Orbiter and absorbed oxygen on the system tubing

This paper reviews the evidence for the original location of a piece of glass bearing the name of Amenhotep II which came into the collection of the Swansea Museum (no.959.3)from the estate of Harold Jones. The paper also examines the chemistry of the piece as an example of early Egyptian glass

American Enterprise in the European Common Market: A Legal Profile. Volume 1.

The rapid expansion of international trade during the past fifteen years has confronted the American business counselor with a great variety of new problems. Solutions to these problems were not expounded to him in his pre-war legal education, nor are they to be found in the rich proliferation of advance sheets, digests, and loose-leaf services with which the modern American lawyer is blessed. When he turns to foreign counsel, he finds that a lack of common legal background makes meaningful professional communication difficult. This book has been prepared with the primary purpose of helping those American lawyers who, because of their clients\u27 expanding activities, confront for the first time the problems of trading with and trading in the European Common Market. It is designed to give them an over-all picture of the new legal framework of the Market itself and of the laws of business organization, labor relations, industrial property, competition, and taxation which prevail there. With this background American lawyers should be better able to select and use the services of the European experts on whom they must, of course, depend for definitive counsel.https://repository.law.umich.edu/michigan_legal_studies/1002/thumbnail.jp

Activity Recognition for Quality Assessment of Batting Shots in Cricket using a Hierarchical Representation

    Get PDF
Quality assessment in cricket is a complex task that is performed by understanding the combination of individual activities a player is able to perform and by assessing how well these activities are performed. We present a framework for inexpensive and accessible, automated recognition of cricketing shots. By means of body-worn inertial measurement units, movements of batsmen are recorded, which are then analysed using a parallelised, hierarchical recognition system that automatically classifies relevant categories of shots as required for assessing batting quality. Our system then generates meaningful visualisations of key performance parameters, including feet positions, attack/defence, and distribution of shots around the ground. These visualisations are the basis for objective skill assessment thereby focusing on specific personal improvement points as identified through our system. We evaluated our framework through a deployment study where 6 players engaged in batting exercises. Based on the recorded movement data we could automatically identify 20 classes of unique batting shot components with an average F1-score greater than 88%. This analysis is the basis for our detailed analysis of our study participants’ skills. Our system has the potential to rival expensive vision-based systems but at a fraction of the cost
