The potential of nuclear MHD electric power systems
Comparison of turbo-MHD cycle with Brayton-MHD and turboelectric cycle
NASA Lewis H2-O2 MHD program
Performance and power costs of H2-O2 combustion powered steam-MHD central power systems are estimated. Hydrogen gas is assumed to be transmitted by pipe from a remote coal gasifier into the city and converted to electricity in a steam MHD plant having an integral gaseous oxygen plant. These steam MHD systems appear to offer an attractive alternative to both in-city clean fueled conventional steam power plants and to remote coal fired power plants with underground electric transmission into the city. Status and plans are outlined for an experimental evaluation of H2-O2 combustion-driven MHD power generators at NASA Lewis Research Center

Ligand-induced closure of inward rectifier Kir6.2 channels traps spermine in the pore
Small organic amines block open voltage-gated K(+) channels and can be trapped by subsequent closure. Such studies provide strong evidence for voltage gating occurring at the intracellular end of the channel. We engineered the necessary properties (long block times with unblock kinetics comparable to, or slower than, the kinetics of gating) into spermine-blocked, ATP-gated (N160D,L157C) mutant K(ATP) channels, in order to test the possibility of “blocker trapping” in ligand-gated Kir channels. Spermine block of these channels is very strongly voltage dependent, such that, at positive voltages, the off-rate of spermine is very low. A brief pulse to negative voltages rapidly relieves the block, but no such relief is observed in ATP-closed channels. The results are well fit by a simple kinetic model that assumes no spermine exit from closed channels. The results incontrovertibly demonstrate that spermine is trapped in channels that are closed by ATP, and implicate the M2 helix bundle crossing, or somewhere lower, as the probable location of the gate
Tuning electronic structures via epitaxial strain in Sr2IrO4 thin films
We have synthesized epitaxial Sr2IrO4 thin-films on various substrates and
studied their electronic structures as a function of lattice-strains. Under
tensile (compressive) strains, increased (decreased) Ir-O-Ir bond-angles are
expected to result in increased (decreased) electronic bandwidths. However, we
have observed that the two optical absorption peaks near 0.5 eV and 1.0 eV are
shifted to higher (lower) energies under tensile (compressive) strains,
indicating that the electronic-correlation energy is also affected by in-plane
lattice-strains. The effective tuning of electronic structures under
lattice-modification provides an important insight into the physics driven by
the coexisting strong spin-orbit coupling and electronic correlation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Public leisure facilities: Managing customer expectations
This paper examines the impact of customer expectations on the management of public leisure services, arguing that public leisure providers will need to shift their attention from the management of service quality, to focus on the management of customer expectations of their services
Origin of electron cyclotron maser-induced radio emissions at ultra-cool dwarfs: magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling currents
A number of ultra-cool dwarfs emit circularly polarised radio waves generated
by the electron cyclotron maser instability. In the solar system such radio is
emitted from regions of strong auroral magnetic field-aligned currents. We thus
apply ideas developed for Jupiter's magnetosphere, being a well-studied
rotationally-dominated analogue in our solar system, to the case of
fast-rotating UCDs. We explain the properties of the radio emission from UCDs
by showing that it would arise from the electric currents resulting from an
angular velocity shear in the fast-rotating magnetic field and plasma, i.e. by
an extremely powerful analogue of the process which causes Jupiter's auroras.
Such a velocity gradient indicates that these bodies interact significantly
with their space environment, resulting in intense auroral emissions. These
results strongly suggest that auroras occur on bodies outside our solar system.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Nested polymerase chain reaction for amplification of the Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein gene.
We developed a sensitive nested polymerase chain reaction procedure for the Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein (COWP) gene. Amplification and genotyping were successful in 95.2% of 1,680 fecal samples, 77.6% by the unnested and 17.6% by the nested COWP procedure. The COWP gene was amplified from 2,128 fecal samples: 71 from livestock animals and 2,057 from humans. This series included 706 cases from seven drinking water-associated outbreaks and 51 cases from five swimming pool-associated outbreaks, as well as 1,300 sporadic cases
Electron-Phonon Interactions in C-derived Molecular Solids
We present {\it ab initio} density-functional calculations of molecular
solids formed from C-derived closed-shell fullerenes. Solid
CH is found to bind weakly and exhibits many of the electronic
structure features of solid C with an enhanced electron-phonon
interaction potential. We show that chemical doping of this structure is
feasible, albeit more restrictive than its C counterpart, with an
estimated superconducting transition temperature exceeding those of the
alkali-doped C solids.Comment: Lower quality postscript file for Figure 1 is used in the manuscript
