    Impact specimen geometry on T23 and TP347HFG steels behaviour during steam oxidation at harsh conditions

    Ferritic T23 steel and austenitic TP347HFG steel have been studied with an emphasis on understanding the impact of specimen geometry on their steam oxidation behaviour. The selected materials were tested over a wide range of temperatures from 600 to 750°C. The tests were carried out in 100% steam conditions for 1000 hours. The tests indicated that the ‘curved-shaped’ specimens show slower mass gain, scale ticking and void nucleation rates than ‘bridge-shaped’ specimens (with flat and convex surfaces combined).     Analysis of high temperature steam oxidation of superheater steels used in coal fired boilers

    The present work compares the behaviour of four steels: (T23, T92, T347HFG, Super304H) in the temperature range 600–750 °C. This study focuses on the analysis of the oxidation kinetics in terms of mass change, metal loss and thickness change of the selected materials. In order to understand the differences in oxidation rates between the selected steels, the impact of chromium and the alloying elements were considered in this work. The obtained results show that the impact of alloying elements differs with exposure conditions and importance of the synergy effect

    The development of a new sport-specific classification of coping and a meta-analysis of the relationship between different coping strategies and moderators on sporting outcomes

    There is an ever growing coping and sports performance literature, with researchers using many different methods to assess performance and different classifications of coping. As such, it makes it difficult to compare studies and therefore identify how coping is related to performance. Furthermore, there are no quantitative syntheses of the results from these studies. A quantitative synthesis would facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of how coping is associated with athletic performance. In order to accurately compare studies, our first aim was to develop a new coping classification that would make this possible. Firstly, we reviewed the strengths and limitations of the different coping classifications and then identified the commonalities and differences between such classifications. We opted for a three-factor classification of coping, because the evidence suggests that a three-factor classification provides a superior model fit to two-factor approaches. Our new classification of coping was based on an existing model from the developmental literature, which received an excellent model fit. We made some adaptations, however, as our classification was intended for an athletic population. As such, we classified coping as mastery (i.e., controlling the situation and eliminating the stressor), internal regulation (i.e., managing internal stress responses), or goal withdrawal (i.e., ceasing efforts towards goal attainment). Undertaking a meta-analysis, our second aim was to identify which coping strategies correlated with sports performance and whether this relationship varied according to moderator variables. Articles were sourced from online electronic databases and manual journal searches. PRISMA guidelines were used to search, select, and synthesize relevant studies. Random effects meta-analyses were performed to identify associations between coping classification and sport performance. Q, I2, and R2 values assessed heterogeneity. Eighteen published investigations, including 3900 participants and incorporating fifty-nine correlations, indicated an overall positive effect for mastery coping, a negligible negative effect for internal regulation coping, and a negative effect for goal withdrawal strategies. The findings of this meta-analysis could be used by sports practitioners to help them deliver effective coping interventions. In order to maximize performance, practitioners could encourage the use of mastery coping, but advise their athletes not to use goal withdrawal strategies

    Optical recording from respiratory pattern generator of foetal mouse brainstem reveals a distributed network

Experiments were made to determine how inspiratory and expiratory neurons are grouped in the brainstem of fetal mice. A further aim was to assess whether rhythmicity arises from a single pacemaker or is generated by multiple sites in the brainstem. To measure neuronal firing, a fluorescent calcium indicator dye was applied to embryonic central nervous systems isolated from mice. While respiratory commands were monitored electrically from third to fifth cervical ventral roots, activity was measured optically over areas containing groups of respiratory neurones, or single neurones, along the medulla from the facial nucleus to the pre-Bötzinger complex. Large optical signals allowed recordings to be made during individual respiratory cycles. Inspiratory and expiratory neurones were intermingled. A novel finding was that bursts of activity arose in a discrete area intermittently, occurring during some breaths, but failing in others. Raised CO2 partial pressure or lowered pH increased the frequency of respiration; neurons then fired reliably with every cycle. Movies of activity revealed patterns of activation of inspiratory and expiratory neurones during successive respiratory cycles; there was no evidence for waves spreading systematically from region to region. Our results suggest that firing of neurons in immature respiratory circuits is a stochastic process, and that the rhythm does not depend on a single pacemaker.     Replication of avian, human and swine influenza viruses in porcine respiratory explants and association with sialic acid distribution

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Throughout the history of human influenza pandemics, pigs have been considered the most likely "mixing vessel" for reassortment between human and avian influenza viruses (AIVs). However, the replication efficiencies of influenza viruses from various hosts, as well as the expression of sialic acid (Sia) receptor variants in the entire porcine respiratory tract have never been studied in detail. Therefore, we established porcine nasal, tracheal, bronchial and lung explants, which cover the entire porcine respiratory tract with maximal similarity to the <it>in vivo </it>situation. Subsequently, we assessed virus yields of three porcine, two human and six AIVs in these explants. Since our results on virus replication were in disagreement with the previously reported presence of putative avian virus receptors in the trachea, we additionally studied the distribution of sialic acid receptors by means of lectin histochemistry. Human (Siaα2-6Gal) and avian virus receptors (Siaα2-3Gal) were identified with <it>Sambucus Nigra </it>and <it>Maackia amurensis </it>lectins respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Compared to swine and human influenza viruses, replication of the AIVs was limited in all cultures but most strikingly in nasal and tracheal explants. Results of virus titrations were confirmed by quantification of infected cells using immunohistochemistry. By lectin histochemistry we found moderate to abundant expression of the human-like virus receptors in all explant systems but minimal binding of the lectins that identify avian-like receptors, especially in the nasal, tracheal and bronchial epithelium.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The species barrier that restricts the transmission of influenza viruses from one host to another remains preserved in our porcine respiratory explants. Therefore this system offers a valuable alternative to study virus and/or host properties required for adaptation or reassortment of influenza viruses. Our results indicate that, based on the expression of Sia receptors alone, the pig is unlikely to be a more appropriate mixing vessel for influenza viruses than humans. We conclude that too little is known on the exact mechanism and on predisposing factors for reassortment to assess the true role of the pig in the emergence of novel influenza viruses.</p

    Effect of stress state and simultaneous hot corrosion on the crack propagation and fatigue life of single crystal superalloy CMSX-4

    Operating conditions within industrial gas turbines are changing in response to pressures to reduce environmental impact and enable use of renewable sources. This is driving an increase in the operational temperatures and pressures of combustion in turbine systems. Additionally, diverse operating environments can result in higher sulphur and trace metal contaminant levels, exacerbating hot corrosion in GT systems. Low cycle fatigue (LCF) cycling can also be intensified as a result of increased start/stop shutdowns. The combined effects of hot corrosion and stress are experimentally studied on CMSX-4 single crystal (SC) γ/γ' system under both fatigue and static stress conditions, with either a multi-axial bending or uniaxial stress state. The associated stress intensity thresholds (KTH) under the various stress conditions were evaluated using finite element analysis (FEA). Cracking was observed both under static and fatigue stress conditions in a hot corrosion environment. Crack morphologies were analysed using SEM techniques. Bending stresses and fatigue cycles demonstrated increased crack propagation in the presence of hot corrosion with static uniaxial stresses showing the longest nucleation times and lowest propagation rates

    Population dynamics, delta vulnerability and environmental change: comparison of the Mekong, Ganges–Brahmaputra and Amazon delta regions

    Tropical delta regions are at risk of multiple threats including relative sea level rise and human alterations, making them more and more vulnerable to extreme floods, storms, surges, salinity intrusion, and other hazards which could also increase in magnitude and frequency with a changing climate. Given the environmental vulnerability of tropical deltas, understanding the interlinkages between population dynamics and environmental change in these regions is crucial for ensuring efficient policy planning and progress toward social and ecological sustainability. Here, we provide an overview of population trends and dynamics in the Ganges–Brahmaputra, Mekong and Amazon deltas. Using multiple data sources, including census data and Demographic and Health Surveys, a discussion regarding the components of population change is undertaken in the context of environmental factors affecting the demographic landscape of the three delta regions. We find that the demographic trends in all cases are broadly reflective of national trends, although important differences exist within and across the study areas. Moreover, all three delta regions have been experiencing shifts in population structures resulting in aging populations, the latter being most rapid in the Mekong delta. The environmental impacts on the different components of population change are important, and more extensive research is required to effectively quantify the underlying relationships. The paper concludes by discussing selected policy implications in the context of sustainable development of delta regions and beyond

    Extensive alternative splicing within the amino-propeptide coding domain of α2(XI) procollagen mRNAs: Expression of transcripts encoding truncated pro-α chains

    Heterogeneity in type XI procollagen structure is extensive because all three α(XI) collagen genes undergo complex alternative splicing within the amino-propeptide coding domain. Exon 7 of the human and exons 6-8 of the mouse α2(XI) collagen genes, encoding part of the amino-propeptide variable region, have recently been shown to be alternatively spliced. We show that exon 6-containing mRNAs for human α2(XI) procollagen are expressed at 28 weeks in fetal tendon and cartilage but not at 38-44 days or 11 weeks. In the mouse, exon 6 is expressed in chondrocytes from 13.5 days onward. We recently identified conserved sequences within intron 6 of the human and mouse α2(XI) collagen genes, containing additional consensus splice acceptor and donor sites that potentially increase the size of exon 7, dividing it into three parts, designated 7A, 7B, and 7C. We show by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization that these potential splice sites are used to yield additional α2(XI) procollagen mRNA splice variants that are expressed in fetal tissues. In human, expression of exon 7B-containing transcripts may be developmental stage-specific. Interestingly, inclusion of exon 7A or exon 7B in human and mouse α2(XI) procollagen mRNAs, respectively, would result in the insertion of an in-frame termination codon, suggesting that some of the additional splice variants encode a truncated pro-α2(XI) chain
