Modelling Organic Dairy Production Systems
In this study, a large number of organic dairy production strategies were compared in terms of physical and financial performance through the integrated use of computer simulation models and organic case study farm data. Production and financial data from three organic case study farms were used as a basis for the modelling process to ensure that the modelled systems were based on real sets of resources that might be available to a farmer. The case study farms were selected to represent a range of farming systems in terms of farm size, concentrate use and location. This paper describes the process used to model the farm systems: the integration of the three models used and the use of indicators to assess the modelled farm systems in terms of physical sustainability and financial performance

Synthesis and alkyne-coupling chemistry of cyclomanganated 1- and 3-acetylindoles, 3-formylindole and analogues
The syntheses are reported of new cyclomanganated indole derivatives (1-acetyl-κO-indolyl-κC2)dicarbonylbis(trimethylphosphite)manganese (2), (1-methyl-3-acetyl-κO-indolyl-κC2)tetracarbonylmanganese (4), (3-formyl-κO-indolyl-κC2)tetracarbonylmanganese (5a) and (1-methyl-3-formyl-κO-indolyl-κC2)tetracarbonylmanganese (5b). The unusually complicated crystal structure of 5b has been determined, the first for a cyclomanganated aryl aldehyde.
The preparations of a mitomycin-related pyrrolo-indole and related products by thermally promoted and oxidatively (Me3NO) initiated alkyne-coupling reactions of the previously known complex (1-acetyl-κO-indolyl-κC2)tetracarbonylmanganese (1) are reported for different alkynes and solvents. X-ray crystal structures are reported for the dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate coupling product of 1 (dimethyl 1-methyl-l-hydroxypyrrolo[1,2a]-indole-2,3-dicarboxylate; 6a), and an unusually-cyclised triple insertion product 8 from the coupling of acetylene with 4, in which a cyclopentadiene moiety is η3-allyl-coordinated to Mn through only one double bond and an exocyclic carbon, but which rearranges on heating to an η5-cyclopentadienyl complex
A Novel Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone 1 (Gnrh1) Enhancer-Derived Noncoding RNA Regulates Gnrh1 Gene Expression in GnRH Neuronal Cell Models.
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a neuropeptide released from a small population of neurons in the hypothalamus, is the central mediator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and is required for normal reproductive development and function. Evolutionarily conserved regulatory elements in the mouse, rat, and human Gnrh1 gene include three enhancers and the proximal promoter, which confer Gnrh1 gene expression specifically in GnRH neurons. In immortalized mouse hypothalamic GnRH (GT1-7) neurons, which show pulsatile GnRH release in culture, RNA sequencing and RT-qPCR revealed that expression of a novel long noncoding RNA at Gnrh1 enhancer 1 correlates with high levels of GnRH mRNA expression. In GT1-7 neurons, which contain a transgene carrying 3 kb of the rat Gnrh1 regulatory region, both the mouse and rat Gnrh1 enhancer-derived noncoding RNAs (GnRH-E1 RNAs) are expressed. We investigated the characteristics and function of the endogenous mouse GnRH-E1 RNA. Strand-specific RT-PCR analysis of GnRH-E1 RNA in GT1-7 cells revealed GnRH-E1 RNAs that are transcribed in the sense and antisense directions from distinct 5' start sites, are 3' polyadenylated, and are over 2 kb in length. These RNAs are localized in the nucleus and have a half-life of over 8 hours. In GT1-7 neurons, siRNA knockdown of mouse GnRH-E1 RNA resulted in a significant decrease in the expression of the Gnrh1 primary transcript and Gnrh1 mRNA. Over-expression of either the sense or antisense mouse GnRH-E1 RNA in immature, migratory GnRH (GN11) neurons, which do not express either GnRH-E1 RNA or GnRH mRNA, induced the transcriptional activity of co-transfected rat Gnrh1 gene regulatory elements, where the induction requires the presence of the rat Gnrh1 promoter. Together, these data indicate that GnRH-E1 RNA is an inducer of Gnrh1 gene expression. GnRH-E1 RNA may play an important role in the development and maturation of GnRH neurons
The Multi-Component Nature of the Vela Pulsar Nonthermal X-ray Spectrum
We report on our analysis of a 274 ks observation of the Vela pulsar with the
Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The double-peaked, pulsed emission at 2 -
30 keV, which we had previously detected during a 93 ks observation, is
confirmed with much improved statistics. There is now clear evidence, both in
the spectrum and the light curve, that the emission in the RXTE band is a blend
of two separate non-thermal components. The spectrum of the harder component
connects smoothly with the OSSE, COMPTEL and EGRET spectrum and the peaks in
the light curve are in phase coincidence with those of the high-energy light
curve. The spectrum of the softer component is consistent with an extrapolation
to the pulsed optical flux, and the second RXTE pulse is in phase coincidence
with the second optical peak. In addition, we see a peak in the 2-8 keV RXTE

What matters in student loan default: a review of the research literature
Journal ArticleFederal higher education policy has shifted over the past few decades from grants to loans as the primary means for providing access to postsecondary education for low and moderate-income families. With this shift, policy makers have begun tracking student loan default rates as a key indicator of the efficacy of student loan programs. This effort requires a closer examination of how to define default and what default signifies: What is an acceptable rate of default? What factors contribute to default? Should default rates be used as indicators of institutional quality or loan program efficacy. These questions lead to further investigation of factors influencing default, such as whether default is a function of the characteristics of students or of the institutions they attend, and whether the types of loans borrowed influence the probabilities of default. To help answer these and related questions, this study reviewed the literature of research on student loan default conducted between 1978 and 2007, and identified 41 of the higher quality studies, the findings of which are summarized here
Global magnetic cycles in rapidly rotating younger suns
Observations of sun-like stars rotating faster than our current sun tend to
exhibit increased magnetic activity as well as magnetic cycles spanning
multiple years. Using global simulations in spherical shells to study the
coupling of large-scale convection, rotation, and magnetism in a younger sun,
we have probed effects of rotation on stellar dynamos and the nature of
magnetic cycles. Major 3-D MHD simulations carried out at three times the
current solar rotation rate reveal hydromagnetic dynamo action that yields
wreaths of strong toroidal magnetic field at low latitudes, often with opposite
polarity in the two hemispheres. Our recent simulations have explored behavior
in systems with considerably lower diffusivities, achieved with sub-grid scale
models including a dynamic Smagorinsky treatment of unresolved turbulence. The
lower diffusion promotes the generation of magnetic wreaths that undergo
prominent temporal variations in field strength, exhibiting global magnetic
cycles that involve polarity reversals. In our least diffusive simulation, we
find that magnetic buoyancy coupled with advection by convective giant cells
can lead to the rise of coherent loops of magnetic field toward the top of the
