    Simulated National Identity and Ascendant Hyperreality in Julian Barnes’s England, England

    The paper sets out to analyze Julian Barnes’s novel England, England (1998) in the light of Jean Baudrillard’s concepts of simulation and hyperreality. According to Baudrillard, what we experience in today’s world is a simulation of reality superseded by signs and images, and therefore we are living in a hyperreal world. Barnes’s book offers a representative sample of hyperreal world in which Martha, the protagonist, finds herself troubled. Although initially she is impressed by the glamour of the theme park named England, England later on she loses interest in it when she comes to realization that everything about it is fake. This condition, making her think of her own identity and true self, finally leads her to leave the theme park and settle in the village of Anglia where she hopes to discover her true nature and regain her lost happiness

    Medpor implant in cranioorbitomaxillary reconstruction: institutional experience and a review of the literature

    ManuscriptAutologous materials remain the gold standard for complex skull base and craniofacial reconstruction, but they carry additional morbidity associated with the second harvest procedure and with prolonged operation time. These autologous materials also resorb in a way that is not predictable, rendering them less ideal in situations where cosmesis and function are of paramount importance to aid with primary healing of the intracranial wound. Medpor porous polyethylene implant is an alloplastic material with unique characteristics that make it an excellent alternative for cranioorbitomaxillary reconstruction. The porous nature of the implant permits the ingrowth of vascularized tissue eventually forming a highly stable complex resistant to infection and deformation. A total of 698 patients undergoing 719 procedures in which Medpor was implanted were reviewed. Two complications occurred that required removal of the implant. On the basis of our results, we believe that the Medpor implant is an excellent alternative to existing alloplastic materials with a low incidence of infection and excellent cosmetic and functional results

    Edward Said’s Orientalism and the Study of the Self and the Other in Orwell’s Burmese Days

    Critics unanimously regard Said’s Orientalism as the cornerstone of postcolonial canon. It was this celebrated work that generated other related books and materials. Orientalism is a Western style for Orientalizing the Orient, i.e. how from knowledge of the Orient particularly from nineteenth century the Orient is defined by a set of recurring images and clichés and how afterwards this knowledge of the Orient is put into practice by colonialism and imperialism. Orientalism is affiliated with the representation of the Self or Occident and the Other or Orient in which the Self is privileged and has upper hand to define, reconstruct the passive, silent and weak Other. For Said, this geographical line made between the Occident and the Orient is arbitrary and numerous Western scholars, orientalists such as Burton, Lane, Lyall, Massignon, among others and literary figures like Aeschylus, Shakespeare, Austin, Flaubert, Kipling, Conrad, etc. contributed to the shaping of this discourse about the Orient and/or misrepresenting the Orient. Orwell as a Western writer was born in India and served five years in Indian Imperial Police in Burma and one of his major concerns during his life was the issue of imperialism and colonialism which is reflected in many works such as Burmese Days, Shooting an Elephant, Marrakech and Hanging. One characteristic which is shared among these western works and similar ones is the author’s conflicting feelings within them about the Orient and Orientals through Western’s lens. In this study, the relationship of the representer or Westerners and the represented or Easterners is fully expounded in Burmese Days in the light of Said’s Orientalism.Key words: Edward Said; Orientalism; Binary opposition; Orwell; The Self and the Other; Burmese Day

    What makes service oriented requirements engineering challenging? A qualitative study

    The focus of Service Oriented Software Development (SOSD) is to develop software by integrating reusable services to lower the required cost, time and effort of development and increase reusability, agility, quality and customer satisfaction. It has been recognised in the literature that SOSD faces various challenges especially in requirements engineering (RE). The objective of this study is to investigate these challenges of Service Oriented RE (SORE) from practitioners' perspectives in order to gain a deeper understanding of the related issues and to reveal potential gaps between research and practice in SORE. They present a qualitative study of the challenges and issues in SORE. The data were collected by conducting interviews with practitioners working in IT companies in Sydney, who have had substantial experience with service oriented software projects. The authors findings reveal that most of the challenges of SORE are similar to those that are faced during RE in traditional or component-based software development. According to the practitioners, the research and practice has made some advances in the technical direction but the human related issues in SORE have not been addressed adequately. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2014

    Inhomogeneous magnetism in single crystalline Sr3_3CuIrO6+δ_{6+\delta}: Implications to phase-separation concepts

    The single crystalline form of an insulator, Sr3_3CuIrO6+δ_{6+\delta}, is shown to exhibit unexpectedly more than one magnetic transition (at 5 and 19 K) with spin-glass-like magnetic susceptibility behaviour. On the basis of this finding, viz., inhomogeneous magnetism in a chemically homogeneous material, we propose that the idea of "phase- separation" described for manganites [1] is more widespread in different ways. The observed experimental features enable us to make a comparison with the predictions of a recent toy model [2] on {\it magnetic} phase separation in an insulating environment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Effect of spiritual counseling on spiritual well-being in Iranian women with cancer: A randomized clinical trial

    Objectives This study examined the effect of spiritual counseling on the spiritual well-being of Iranian women with cancer. Design and setting a randomized clinical trial was conducted on 42 female cancer patients who were randomized to either an 8-week spiritual counseling intervention (n = 21) or a control group that received routine education/care (n = 21). Spiritual well-being (SWB) was assessed before and after the 8-week spiritual counseling program using Paloutzian and Ellison's (1983) Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS). Results There were no significant differences on SWBS and its two subscales scores (RWB and EWB) between intervention and control groups at baseline (p >.05). After intervention, there was a significant mean difference in SWB (p =.001), RWB (p =.013) and EWB (p =.001) in two groups. Conclusions Spiritual counseling is associated with significant improvements in SWB in Iranian women with cancer. Interventions that acknowledge the spiritual needs of these patients should be incorporated into conventional treatments. © 201

    Unveiling the Efficiency of Vermicompost Derived from Different Biowastes on Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Plant Growth and Soil Health

    The present study was conducted to explore the role of different types of vermicomposts (VCs) prepared from different substrates to improve soil health (physical and chemical properties) and wheat plant growth under field conditions. Different combinations of vermicompost prepared from different substrates (cow dung, paper waste, and rice straw) and inorganic fertilizers were applied in soil using wheat as a test plant. The impact of three different VCs on physico-chemical characteristics and nutrient availability in soil was evaluated to examine their efficacy in combination with chemical fertilizers. Temporal trends in vermicomposting treatments at various stages showed significant improvement in physico-chemical attributes of the VCs substrates. All the plant physiological attributes showed significant response where N: P: K 100:50:50 kg ha?1 + 10 t ha?1 cow dung vermicompost was applied. In addition, post-harvest analysis of soil not only revealed that different combinations of the vermicomposting treatments improved the soil health by improving the physico-chemical attributes of the soil. Conclusively, application of cow dung vermicompost along with recommended NPK not only improved crop yield, soil health, reduced insect (aphid) infestation but also fortified grains with Zn and Fe. © 2019 by the authors.7527, 9017; Provozn?     Transport and Magnetic Properties of FexVse2 (x = 0 - 0.33)

    We present our results of the effect of Fe intercalation on the structural, transport and magnetic properties of 1T-VSe2. Intercalation of iron, suppresses the 110K charge density wave (CDW) transition of the 1T-VSe2. For the higher concentration of iron, formation of a new kind of first order transition at 160K takes place, which go on stronger for the 33% Fe intercalation. Thermopower of the FexVSe2 compounds (x = 0 - 0.33), however do not show any anomaly around the transition. The intercalation of Fe does not trigger any magnetism in the weak paramagnetic 1T-VSe2, and Fe is the low spin state of Fe3+.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, 2 table

    New ectomycorrhizas from Sakesar Hills

    The Sakesar hills fall in Dry subtropical submountaneous forest of salt range. The highest peak of this range is 1, 522m above sea level. Conifers especially Pinus roxburghii and Pinus wallichiana occupy the upper altitudinal zone of these hills. During the investigation of pines of Sakesar hills for the exploration of diversity of ectomycorrhizas, twenty-two root samples from the rhizosphere of these trees were taken from different sites of PAF Base, Sakesar. This investigation revealed fifteen different kinds of ectomycorrhizas. The isolated mycorrhizas are morphologically and anatomically described and are given tentative binomials considering each mycorrhiza as a distinct entity. These ectomycorrhizas fall in the category of “unidentified” mycorrhizas, as their possible mycobionts are not known
