With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoTs), an increasing number of computation intensive or delay sensitive biomedical data processing and analysis tasks are produced in vehicles, bringing more and more challenges to the biometric monitoring of drivers. Edge computing is a new paradigm to solve these challenges by offloading tasks from the resource-limited vehicles to Edge Servers (ESs) in Road Side Units (RSUs). However, most of the traditional offloading schedules for vehicular networks concentrate on the edge, while some tasks may be too complex for ESs to process. To this end, we consider a collaborative vehicular network in which the cloud, edge and terminal can cooperate with each other to accomplish the tasks. The vehicles can offload the computation intensive tasks to the cloud to save the resource of edge. We further construct the virtual resource pool which can integrate the resource of multiple ESs since some regions may be covered by multiple RSUs. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Scenario offloading schedule for biomedical data processing and analysis in Cloud-Edge-Terminal collaborative vehicular networks called MSCET. The parameters of the proposed MSCET are optimized to maximize the system utility. We also conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the proposed MSCET and the results illustrate that MSCET outperforms other existing schedules. © 2004-2012 IEEE

Plasmon reflections by topological electronic boundaries in bilayer graphene

Domain walls separating regions of AB and BA interlayer stacking in bilayer graphene have attracted attention as novel examples of structural solitons, topological electronic boundaries, and nanoscale plasmonic scatterers. We show that strong coupling of domain walls to surface plasmons observed in infrared nanoimaging experiments is due to topological chiral modes confined to the walls. The optical transitions among these chiral modes and the band continua enhance the local ac conductivity, which leads to plasmon reflection by the domain walls. The imaging reveals two kinds of plasmonic standing-wave interference patterns, which we attribute to shear and tensile domain walls. We compute the electronic structure of both wall varieties and show that the tensile wall contain additional confined bands which produce a structure-specific contrast of the local conductivity. The calculated plasmonic interference profiles are in quantitative agreement with our experiments.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Esophageal cancer is one of the most common human cancers, and its incidence is highly endemic in China. The combination of Chinese herbal injections (CHIs) and radiotherapy should be informed by the best available evidence.Aim of the study: To update and expand on previous work in order to compare and rank the efficacy and safety of CHIs in combination with radiotherapy to treat esophageal cancer.Materials and Methods: We searched several electronic databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding CHIs to treat esophageal cancer from their inception to March 15, 2017. In a network meta-analysis (NMA), the bias of the included trials was assessed by two individuals independently in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Outcomes such as the clinical effectiveness rate, performance status, adverse reactions (ADRs), and survival rate were evaluated. We performed a random-effects NMA to obtain estimates of efficacy and safety outcomes, and we present these estimates as odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) calculated via Stata 13.1 and WinBUGS 1.4 software. Furthermore, the surface under cumulative the ranking curve (SUCRA) was used to rank the efficacy and safety of different CHIs in relation to each outcome. Results: Of 685 identified trials, 55 were eligible for inclusion in the study. These 55 trials included 12 CHIs and 4,114 participants. The cluster analysis results suggested that Compound kushen injection therapy is the optimal CHI treatment for patients with esophageal cancer in terms of improving the clinical effectiveness rate and performance status. Huachansu and Kangai injection are superior in improving 1-year and 2-year survival rates. Lentinan injection may be considered a favorable choice for reliving ADRs, and Compound kushen injection may provide treatment benefits by reducing both gastrointestinal reaction and radiation esophagitis. Conclusions: The current clinical evidence indicated that Compound kushen injection combined with radiotherapy is the most preferable and beneficial option for patients with esophageal cancer in terms of efficacy and safety. However, the results of our study should be interpreted with caution given the limitations of the sample size and the methodological quality of the included trials

Engineering allosteric inhibition of homoserine dehydrogenase by semi-rational saturation mutagenesis screening

Allosteric regulation by pathway products plays a vital role in amino acid metabolism. Homoserine dehydrogenase (HSD), the key enzyme for the biosynthesis of various aspartate family amino acids, is subject to feedback inhibition by l-threonine and l-isoleucine. The desensitized mutants with the potential for amino acid production remain limited. Herein, a semi-rational approach was proposed to relieve the feedback inhibition. HSD from Corynebacterium glutamicum (CgHSD) was first characterized as a homotetramer, and nine conservative sites at the tetramer interface were selected for saturation mutagenesis by structural simulations and sequence analysis. Then, we established a high-throughput screening (HTS) method based on resistance to l-threonine analog and successfully acquired two dominant mutants (I397V and A384D). Compared with the best-ever reported desensitized mutant G378E, both new mutants qualified the engineered strains with higher production of CgHSD-dependent amino acids. The mutant and wild-type enzymes were purified and assessed in the presence or absence of inhibitors. Both purified mutants maintained >90% activity with 10 mM l-threonine or 25 mM l-isoleucine. Moreover, they showed >50% higher specific activities than G378E without inhibitors. This work provides two competitive alternatives for constructing cell factories of CgHSD-related amino acids and derivatives. Moreover, the proposed approach can be applied to engineering other allosteric enzymes in the amino acid synthesis pathway

Background and Objective: Despite striking advances in multimodality management, gastric cancer (GC) remains the third cause of cancer mortality globally and identifying novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers is urgently demanded. The study aimed to identify potential key genes associated with the pathogenesis and prognosis of GC.Methods: Differentially expressed genes between GC and normal gastric tissue samples were screened by an integrated analysis of multiple gene expression profile datasets. Key genes related to the pathogenesis and prognosis of GC were identified by employing protein–protein interaction network and Cox proportional hazards model analyses. Results: We identified nine hub genes (TOP2A, COL1A1, COL1A2, NDC80, COL3A1, CDKN3, CEP55, TPX2, and TIMP1) which might be tightly correlated with the pathogenesis of GC. A prognostic gene signature consisted of CST2, AADAC, SERPINE1, COL8A1, SMPD3, ASPN, ITGBL1, MAP7D2, and PLEKHS1 was constructed with a good performance in predicting overall survivals. Conclusion: The findings of this study would provide some directive significance for further investigating the diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers to facilitate the molecular targeting therapy of GC

Digital image watermarking: its formal model, fundamental properties and possible attacks

While formal definitions and security proofs are well established in some fields like cryptography and steganography, they are not as evident in digital watermarking research. A systematic development of watermarking schemes is desirable, but at present their development is usually informal, ad hoc, and omits the complete realization of application scenarios. This practice not only hinders the choice and use of a suitable scheme for a watermarking application, but also leads to debate about the state-of-the-art for different watermarking applications. With a view to the systematic development of watermarking schemes, we present a formal generic model for digital image watermarking. Considering possible inputs, outputs, and component functions, the initial construction of a basic watermarking model is developed further to incorporate the use of keys. On the basis of our proposed model, fundamental watermarking properties are defined and their importance exemplified for different image applications. We also define a set of possible attacks using our model showing different winning scenarios depending on the adversary capabilities. It is envisaged that with a proper consideration of watermarking properties and adversary actions in different image applications, use of the proposed model would allow a unified treatment of all practically meaningful variants of watermarking schemes
