    Model Updating for Loading Capacity Estimation of Concrete Structures using Ambient Vibration

    This paper presents a model updating approach for determining the loading capacity of a concrete structure utilising measured ambient vibration responses. The proposed method uses Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) with the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) technique to identify the natural frequencies and mode shapes of an experimental replica specimen of a Sydney Harbour Bridge concrete jack arch component. For vibration testing, the structure is excited with ambient vibration recordings from the actual Sydney Harbour Bridge using a vibro tactile transducer. The vibration responses of the structure are measured using an array of strategically placed accelerometers. A numerical model is developed and updated using the vibrational characteristics with the aim of estimating the load capacity of the structure. The results show that the proposed updating method using partitioning has great potential to be used for determining the loading capacity of a structure as part of a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system

    Simulation of various damage scenarios using finite element modelling for structural health monitoring systems

    © 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, London. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a developing technology for asset management of structures including bridge assets. A crucial benefit of SHM is its ability to monitor the health status of structures using continuous measurements. As a key in SHM, the application of damage detection algorithms to assess the condition of a structure using vibration measurements can be enhanced by providing structural information under various damaged scenarios, which can be obtained from updated numerical models that realistically represent the in-situ structure. However, the dynamic characteristics of a structure are sensitive to uncertainties of various parameters, including material properties and boundary conditions, which require updating in the Finite Element (FE) model to ensure that the model replicates the actual structure. This study focuses on the development of an FE model for the accurate simulation of a jack arch replica structure of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. An experimental jack arch replica is produced to simulate various damage scenarios for laboratory testing. A matching FE model of the jack arch replica is generated and updated using Genetic Algorithm (GA) based on experimental measurements. Damage is simulated in the updated model and the results are validated using the experimental test results. The successful simulation of damage using updated FE models enables the generation of a large number of damage cases that can be trained into an SHM system to improve its damage detection capabilities

    FRF Sensitivity-Based Damage Identification Using Linkage Modeling for Limited Sensor Arrays

This paper presents a novel method to localize and quantify damage in a jack arch structure by introducing a linkage modeling technique to overcome issues caused by having limited sensors. The main strategy in the proposed Frequency Response Function (FRF)-based sensitivity model updating approach is to divide the specimen into partitions. The Young's modulus of each partition is then updated to detect stiffness reduction caused by damage. System Equivalent Reduction Expansion Process (SEREP) is used to reduce the full finite element (FE) model to a linkage model. The number of measured degrees of freedom (DOFs) is then expanded to the linkage model using the mass and stiffness matrices of the linkage model for the synthesis of interpolated FRFs. The FRF sensitivities are then formulated using the linkage model along with the interpolated FRFs to iteratively calculate the values of the updating parameters until convergence is achieved. The methodology and theory behind this procedure are discussed and verified using a numerical and experimental study. The successful implementation of this method has the potential to detect the location and severity of damage where sensor placement is limited

    Grain Boundary Induced Bias Instability in Soluble Acene-Based Thin-Film Transistors

    Since the grain boundaries (GBs) within the semiconductor layer of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have a strong influence on device performance, a substantial number of studies have been devoted to controlling the crystallization characteristics of organic semiconductors. We studied the intrinsic effects of GBs within 5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (TES-ADT) thin films on the electrical properties of OFETs. The GB density was easily changed by controlling nulceation event in TES-ADT thin films. When the mixing time was increased, the number of aggregates in asspun TES-ADT thin films were increased and subsequent exposure of the films to 1,2-dichloroethane vapor led to a significant increase in the number of nuleation sites, thereby increasing the GB density of TES-ADT spherulites. The density of GBs strongly influences the angular spread and crystallographic orientation of TES-ADT spherulites. Accordingly, the FETs with higher GB densities showed much poorer electrical characteristics than devices with lower GB density. Especially, GBs provide charge trapping sites which are responsible for bias-stress driven electrical instability. Dielectric surface treatment with a polystyrene brush layer clarified the GB-induced charge trapping by reducing charge trapping at the semiconductor-dielectric interface.     Social representations of HIV/AIDS in five Central European and Eastern European countries: A multidimensional analysis

    Cognitive processing models of risky sexual behaviour have proliferated in the two decades since the first reporting of HIV/AIDS, but far less attention has been paid to individual and group representations of the epidemic and the relationship between these representations and reported sexual behaviours. In this study, 494 business people and medics from Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Poland and Russia sorted free associations around HIV/AIDS in a matrix completion task. Exploratory factor and multidimensional scaling analyses revealed two main dimensions (labelled ‘Sex’ and ‘Deadly disease’), with significant cultural and gender variations along both dimension scores. Possible explanations for these results are discussed in the light of growing concerns over the spread of the epidemic in this region

    Identification of Colletotrichum species associated with anthracnose disease of coffee in Vietnam

    Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. acutatum, C. capsici and C. boninense associated with anthracnose disease on coffee (Coffea spp.) in Vietnam were identified based on morphology and DNA analysis. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences from the internal transcribed spacer region of nuclear rDNA and a portion of mitochondrial small subunit rRNA were concordant and allowed good separation of the taxa. We found several Colletotrichum isolates of unknown species and their taxonomic position remains unresolved. The majority of Vietnamese isolates belonged to C. gloeosporioides and they grouped together with the coffee berry disease (CBD) fungus, C. kahawae. However, C. kahawae could be distinguished from the Vietnamese C. gloeosporioides isolates based on ammonium tartrate utilization, growth rate and pathogenictity. C. gloeosporioides isolates were more pathogenic on detached green berries than isolates of the other species, i.e. C. acutatum, C capsici and C. boninense. Some of the C. gloeosporioides isolates produced slightly sunken lesion on green berries resembling CBD symptoms but it did not destroy the bean. We did not find any evidence of the presence of C. kahawae in Vietnam

    Factors Influencing Physicians’ Screening Behavior for Liver Cancer Among High-risk Patients

    BACKGROUND: Little is known about physicians’ screening patterns for liver cancer despite its rising incidence. OBJECTIVE: Describe physician factors associated with liver cancer screening. DESIGN: Mailed survey. PARTICIPANTS: Physicians practicing in family practice, internal medicine, gastroenterology, or nephrology in 3 northern California counties in 2004. MEASUREMENTS: Sociodemographic and practice measures, liver cancer knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported screening behaviors. RESULTS: The response rate was 61.8% (N = 459). Gastroenterologists (100%) were more likely than Internists (88.4%), family practitioners (84.2%), or nephrologists (75.0%) to screen for liver cancer in high-risk patients (p = 0.016). In multivariate analysis, screeners were more likely than nonscreeners to think that screening for liver cancer reduced mortality (odds ratio [OR] 1.60, CI 1.09–2.34) and that not screening was a malpractice risk (OR 1.88, CI 1.29–2.75). Screeners were more likely than nonscreeners to order any screening test if it was a quality of care measure (OR 4.39, CI 1.79–10.81). CONCLUSIONS: Despite debate about screening efficacy, many physicians screen for liver cancer. Their screening behavior is influenced by malpractice and quality control concerns. More research is needed to develop better screening tests for liver cancer, to evaluate their effectiveness, and to understand how physicians behave when there is insufficient evidence
