Interacting partially directed self avoiding walk. From phase transition to the geometry of the collapsed phase
In this paper, we investigate a model for a dimensional
self-interacting and partially directed self-avoiding walk, usually referred to
by the acronym IPDSAW. The interaction intensity and the free energy of the
system are denoted by and , respectively. The IPDSAW is known to
undergo a collapse transition at . We provide the precise asymptotic
of the free energy close to criticality, that is we show that

explicitly and interpreted in terms of an associated continuous model. We also
establish some path properties of the random walk inside the collapsed phase
. We prove that the geometric conformation adopted by the
polymer is made of a succession of long vertical stretches that attract each
other to form a unique macroscopic bead, we identify the horizontal extension
of the random walk inside the collapsed phase and we establish the convergence
of the rescaled envelope of the macroscopic bead towards a deterministic Wulff

Genesis, Pathways, and Terminations of Intense Global Water Vapor Transport in Association with Large-Scale Climate Patterns
The CONNected objECT (CONNECT) algorithm is applied to global Integrated Water Vapor Transport data from the NASA's Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications – Version 2 reanalysis product for the period of 1980 to 2016. The algorithm generates life-cycle records in time and space evolving strong vapor transport events. We show five regions, located in the midlatitudes, where events typically exist (off the coast of the southeast United States, eastern China, eastern South America, off the southern tip of South Africa, and in the southeastern Pacific Ocean). Global statistics show distinct genesis and termination regions and global seasonal peak frequency during Northern Hemisphere late fall/winter and Southern Hemisphere winter. In addition, the event frequency and geographical location are shown to be modulated by the Arctic Oscillation, Pacific North American Pattern, and the quasi-biennial oscillation. Moreover, a positive linear trend in the annual number of objects is reported, increasing by 3.58 objects year-over-year
Variety and the evolution of refinery processing
Evolutionary theories of economic development stress the role of variety as both a determinant and a result of growth. In this paper we develop a measure of variety, based on Weitzman's maximum likelihood procedure. This measure is based on the distance between products, and indicates the degree of differentiation of a product population. We propose a generic method, which permits to regroup the products with very similar characteristics values before choosing randomly the product models to be used to calculate Weitzman's measure. We apply the variety measure to process characteristics of oil refining. The results obtained for this technology show classic evolutionary specialization patterns that can be understood on the basis of niche theory. Here the changes in variety are related to changes in the range of the services the technology considered can deliver, range which plays a role similar to that of the size of the habitat of a biological species.TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION; REFINERY PROCESSES; NICHE THEORY; WEITZMAN MEASURE
Negative Magnetoresistance in the Nearest-neighbor Hopping Conduction
We propose a size effect which leads to the negative magnetoresistance in
granular metal-insulator materials in which the hopping between two nearest
neighbor clusters is the main transport mechanism. We show that the hopping
probability increases with magnetic field. This is originated from the level
crossing in a few-electron cluster. Thus, the overlap of electronic states of
two neighboring clusters increases, and the negative magnetoresistance is

Interaction log and provenance for sensemaking
This paper describes two visual analytic tools designed to support sensemaking through the visualisation of interaction log and analytic provenance. The first tool, SensePath, aims to reduce the time required for the transcription and coding during qualitative analysis such as thematic analysis (making sense of the experiment data). The second tool, SenseMap, is designed to help online sensemaking with everyday tasks such as buying a digital camera. User evaluation leads to early insight of how the visualisation of interaction log and analytic provenance can help these sensemaking tasks
An integrated core competence evaluation framework for portfolio management in the oil industry
The proponents of resource-based theory argue that efficient management of core competence portfolio provides sustainable competitive advantages. However, literature demonstrates little evidence regarding (i) how to identify core competence, specifically for a company operating in the oil sector, (ii) how to identify tangible and intangible resources related to the core competence of the company, and (iii) how to manage a company’s competence portfolio more efficiently by forging network alliances with collaborating firms. Drawing upon resource-based theory this paper presents a core competence evaluation framework for managing the competence portfolio of an oil company. The paper introduces a network typology to illustrate how to form different types of strategic alliance relations with partnering firms to manage and grow the competence portfolio. The framework is tested using a case study approach involving face-to-face structured interviews with twenty-five divisional managers of a large oil company in the Middle East. We identified purchasing, refining and sales and marketing as strong candidates to be the core competencies of the company. However, despite the company’s core business of refining oil, the core competencies were identified to be their research and development and performance management (PM) capabilities. We further provide a procedure to determine different kinds of physical, intellectual and cultural resources making a dominant impact on company’s competence portfolio. In addition, we provide a comprehensive set of guidelines on how to develop core competence further by forging a partnership alliance choosing an appropriate network topology. The paper makes many contributions to the field of strategic management and core competence evaluation in the oil sector. The guidelines provided can assist practitioners with devising appropriate network relationships with partnering companies in order to outsource, divest, protect and/or develop their core competence portfolio
Complex group algebras of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups
We prove that the double covers of the alternating and symmetric groups are
determined by their complex group algebras. To be more precise, let
be an integer, a finite group, and let \AAA and \SSS^\pm denote the
double covers of \Al_n and \Sy_n, respectively. We prove that \CC G\cong
\CC \AAA if and only if G\cong \AAA, and \CC G\cong \CC
\SSS^+\cong\CC\SSS^- if and only if G\cong \SSS^+ or \SSS^-. This in
particular completes the proof of a conjecture proposed by the second and
fourth authors that every finite quasi-simple group is determined uniquely up
to isomorphism by the structure of its complex group algebra. The known results
on prime power degrees and relatively small degrees of irreducible (linear and
projective) representations of the symmetric and alternating groups together
with the classification of finite simple groups play an essential role in the

A Clinical and Epidemiological Investigation of the First Reported Human Infection With the Zoonotic Parasite Trypanosoma evansi in Southeast Asia
Background. Trypanosoma is a genus of unicellular parasitic flagellate protozoa. Trypanosoma brucei species and Trypanosoma cruzi are the major agents of human trypanosomiasis; other Trypanosoma species can cause human disease, but are rare. In March 2015, a 38-year-old woman presented to a healthcare facility in southern Vietnam with fever, headache, and arthralgia. Microscopic examination of blood revealed infection with Trypanosoma. Methods. Microscopic observation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of blood samples, and serological testing were performed to identify the infecting species. The patient's blood was screened for the trypanocidal protein apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1), and a field investigation was performed to identify the zoonotic source. Results. PCR amplification and serological testing identified the infecting species as Trypanosoma evansi. Despite relapsing 6 weeks after completing amphotericin B therapy, the patient made a complete recovery after 5 weeks of suramin. The patient was found to have 2 wild-type APOL1 alleles and a normal serum APOL1 concentration. After responsive animal sampling in the presumed location of exposure, cattle and/or buffalo were determined to be the most likely source of the infection, with 14 of 30 (47%) animal blood samples testing PCR positive for T. evansi. Conclusions. We report the first laboratory-confirmed case of T. evansi in a previously healthy individual without APOL1 deficiency, potentially contracted via a wound while butchering raw beef, and successfully treated with suramin. A linked epidemiological investigation revealed widespread and previously unidentified burden of T. evansi in local cattle, highlighting the need for surveillance of this infection in animals and the possibility of further human cases
