    Minari: The Concealed Asian Aspiration Wrapped in the American Dream

    After the success of the Korean film Parasite, Minari – a quasi-autobiographical drama of the Korean-American film director Lee Isaac Chung – has again turned the global public’s attention to Korean culture at large. In this review, we shed light on two themes that we capture from the movie: tensions and compromises in chasing the American dream of immigrants. Although stories about pursuing the American dream are abundant, we know less about how that dream causes tensions at the individual and family levels and how the tensions are resolved. Minari is an excellent example to probe the unfolding issues relating to the challenges of Americanization

    Multi-dimensional data refining strategy for effective fine-tuning LLMs

    Data is a cornerstone for fine-tuning large language models, yet acquiring suitable data remains challenging. Challenges encompassed data scarcity, linguistic diversity, and domain-specific content. This paper presents lessons learned while crawling and refining data tailored for fine-tuning Vietnamese language models. Crafting such a dataset, while accounting for linguistic intricacies and striking a balance between inclusivity and accuracy, demands meticulous planning. Our paper presents a multidimensional strategy including leveraging existing datasets in the English language and developing customized data-crawling scripts with the assistance of generative AI tools. A fine-tuned LLM model for the Vietnamese language, which was produced using resultant datasets, demonstrated good performance while generating Vietnamese news articles from prompts. The study offers practical solutions and guidance for future fine-tuning models in languages like Vietnamese

    This study evaluates the efficacy of ChatGPT as an AI teaching and learning support tool in an integrated circuit systems course at a higher education institution in an Asian country. Various question types were completed, and ChatGPT responses were assessed to gain valuable insights for further investigation. The objective is to assess ChatGPT's ability to provide insights, personalized support, and interactive learning experiences in engineering education. The study includes the evaluation and reflection of different stakeholders: students, lecturers, and engineers. The findings of this study shed light on the benefits and limitations of ChatGPT as an AI tool, paving the way for innovative learning approaches in technical disciplines. Furthermore, the study contributes to our understanding of how digital transformation is likely to unfold in the education sector

    Considerations in Developing Blockchain-enabled Food Supply Chain Solutions: A Developer Perspective

    There is currently considerable interest and activity in the adoption of blockchains in food supply chains (FSC) by both researchers and industry. Blockchain developers have to satisfy the requirements of multiple users and stakeholders as well as handle technical requirements from the underlying blockchain platform. Many prior studies are conceptual and theoretical and there is a need for both a deeper understanding of the problem space and also a need for insights from real-world perspectives, particularly in the FSC context. This study interviewed 14 experts from FSC blockchain application provider companies. The interviews were analysed using a Grounded Theory approach. The preliminary findings presented in this research-in-progress paper show that developers are concerned with: Technical aspects, cost-benefit aspects, management and operational aspects, end-user issues and societal aspects. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the issues involved in developing blockchain applications in FSC

    A Case Report of Thalamic Infarction after Lumbar Drain: A Unique Cause of Perioperative Stroke?

    In the case presented, a patient has an unexplained episode of hypertension during aneurysm clipping. Following the procedure, the patient was discovered to have bilateral thalamic infarctions unrelated to the vascular location of the aneurysm. After a review of the case, it becomes apparent that intracranial hypotension caused by lumbar over drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is the likely cause of both the episode of intraoperative hypertension and the thalamic infarcts. It is often presumed that having an open dura protects against intracranial hypotension and subsequent herniation. We present this case to suggest that opening the dura might not be protective in all cases and anesthesiologists must pay particular attention to the rate of CSF drainage. Lumbar CSF drainage is a technique frequently employed during neurological surgery and it is important for anesthesiologists to understand the signs, symptoms, and potential consequences of intracranial hypotension from rapid drainage

    RhoA function in lamellae formation and migration is regulated by the alpha6beta4 integrin and cAMP metabolism

    Clone A colon carcinoma cells develop fan-shaped lamellae and exhibit random migration when plated on laminin, processes that depend on the ligation of the alpha6beta4 integrin. Here, we report that expression of a dominant negative RhoA (N19RhoA) in clone A cells inhibited alpha6beta4-dependent membrane ruffling, lamellae formation, and migration. In contrast, expression of a dominant negative Rac (N17Rac1) had no effect on these processes. Using the Rhotekin binding assay to assess RhoA activation, we observed that engagement of alpha6beta4 by either antibody-mediated clustering or laminin attachment resulted in a two- to threefold increase in RhoA activation, compared with cells maintained in suspension or plated on collagen. Antibody-mediated clustering of beta1 integrins, however, actually suppressed Rho A activation. The alpha6beta4-mediated interaction of clone A cells with laminin promoted the translocation of RhoA from the cytosol to membrane ruffles at the edges of lamellae and promoted its colocalization with beta1 integrins, as assessed by immunofluorescence microscopy. In addition, RhoA translocation was blocked by inhibiting phosphodiesterase activity and enhanced by inhibiting the activity of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. Together, these results establish a specific integrin-mediated pathway of RhoA activation that is regulated by cAMP and that functions in lamellae formation and migration
