Spectral analysis for preconditioning of multi-dimensional Riesz fractional diffusion equations
In this paper, we analyze the spectra of the preconditioned matrices arising
from discretized multi-dimensional Riesz spatial fractional diffusion
equations. The finite difference method is employed to approximate the
multi-dimensional Riesz fractional derivatives, which will generate symmetric
positive definite ill-conditioned multi-level Toeplitz matrices. The
preconditioned conjugate gradient method with a preconditioner based on the
sine transform is employed to solve the resulting linear system. Theoretically,
we prove that the spectra of the preconditioned matrices are uniformly bounded
in the open interval (1/2,3/2) and thus the preconditioned conjugate gradient
method converges linearly. The proposed method can be extended to multi-level
Toeplitz matrices generated by functions with zeros of fractional order. Our
theoretical results fill in a vacancy in the literature. Numerical examples are
presented to demonstrate our new theoretical results in the literature and show
the convergence performance of the proposed preconditioner that is better than
other existing preconditioners

Optimizing Survivorship Care Services for Asian Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors: A Qualitative Study.
Purpose: With an increasing focus on developing survivorship services tailored for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, incorporation of viewpoints from both survivors and health care professionals (HCPs) is important. This study aims to explore the perceptions of current and prospective survivorship services from both groups in Singapore to propose service design and delivery strategies. Methods: Focus group discussions with 23 AYA cancer survivors between the ages of 16 and 39 years at diagnosis and 18 HCPs were conducted in National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) and Singapore Cancer Society (SCS). All focus group discussions were transcribed verbatim. Deductive thematic analysis was performed according to the components of a design thinking model: empathizing with AYA survivors, defining care gaps, proposing services, and implementation strategies. Results: AYA survivors preferred age-specific services that are aligned with their personal goals. Current survivorship care failed to address the needs of survivors' dependents (caregivers and children) and to consider the utility of each service temporally. Prospective services should clarify disease disclosure obligation in job search and introduce a care navigator. Key implementation strategies included (1) training HCPs on communication techniques with AYA, (2) selecting engagement platforms that complement survivors' information-seeking behavior, (3) improving outreach to survivors through appropriate branding and publicity, and (4) consolidating services from multiple providers. Conclusions: The design of survivorship care services for AYA survivors should be systematic in its conceptualization process and employ implementation strategies. The coordination of the wide spectrum of services warrants a concerted effort by cancer centers, community partners, and the government
Predicting visual context for unsupervised event segmentation in continuous photo-streams
Segmenting video content into events provides semantic structures for
indexing, retrieval, and summarization. Since motion cues are not available in
continuous photo-streams, and annotations in lifelogging are scarce and costly,
the frames are usually clustered into events by comparing the visual features
between them in an unsupervised way. However, such methodologies are
ineffective to deal with heterogeneous events, e.g. taking a walk, and
temporary changes in the sight direction, e.g. at a meeting. To address these
limitations, we propose Contextual Event Segmentation (CES), a novel
segmentation paradigm that uses an LSTM-based generative network to model the
photo-stream sequences, predict their visual context, and track their
evolution. CES decides whether a frame is an event boundary by comparing the
visual context generated from the frames in the past, to the visual context
predicted from the future. We implemented CES on a new and massive lifelogging
dataset consisting of more than 1.5 million images spanning over 1,723 days.
Experiments on the popular EDUB-Seg dataset show that our model outperforms the
state-of-the-art by over 16% in f-measure. Furthermore, CES' performance is

Normative beliefs, attitudes, and social norms: people reduce waste as an index of social relationships when spending leisure time
This study has adopted and refined Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior, theory of reasoned action, and the value–belief–norm theory by Stern et al. to investigate the effects of normative beliefs, attitudes,andsocialnormsonpro-environmentalbehavioralintentions. Atotalof391validresponses were collected from visitors to a theme park in Taiwan. A structure equation analysis indicated that the overall fit of the proposed model was supported. It was also found that both attitudes and social norms had positive and significant influence on waste reduction. While the results did not reveal any direct relation between normative beliefs and behavioral intentions, normative beliefs had positive direct influence on social norms and attitudes, which in turn had an impact on behavioral intentions. The findings provided further insights about pro-environmental behavioral intentions from an Asia perspective and highlighted important implications for environmental policies and education to reduce waste
The use of multiple displacement amplification to amplify complex DNA libraries
Complex libraries for genomic DNA and cDNA sequencing analyses are typically amplified using bacterial propagation. To reduce biases, large numbers of colonies are plated and scraped from solid-surface agar. This process is time consuming, tedious and limits scaling up. At the same time, multiple displacement amplification (MDA) has been recently developed as a method for in vitro amplification of DNA. However, MDA has no selection function for the removal of ligation multimers. We developed a novel method of briefly introducing ligation reactions into bacteria to select single insert DNA clones followed by MDA to amplify. We applied these methods to a Gene Identification Signatures with Paired-End diTags (GIS-PET) library, which is a complex transcriptome library created by pairing short tags from the 5′ and 3′ ends of cDNA fragments together, and demonstrated that this selection and amplification strategy is unbiased and efficient
Free-living marine nematodes community structure in the conservation area (Chaojing Park) and its adjacent area of Keelung, Taiwan
Studies conducted in the same seas or even study sites nearby each other, showed very different community structure, implying the patchiness of free-living marine nematodes which may be related to the sedimentary environment such as sediment type and food availability of the study area. This study was motivated by the concerns about the impacts of high level of anthropogenic activities on Chaojing Park (gazetted as Wanghaixiang’s Chao-Jing Bay Resource Conservation Area (WCJBRA) in 2016). The present study provides baseline knowledge of free-living marine nematode community structure in WCJBRA and identify potential marine nematodes as bioindicators to indicate possible impacts of the anthropogenic activities to the Chaojing Park. A total of 15 stations were selected in the subtidal zones of WCJBRA and its adjacent area. Marine nematode sample collection was carried out on the 13th and 14th of September 2019 using SCUBA diving technique. Results showed positive correlation between nematode density and medium sand (500μm-1.0mm). Presence of certain species such as Daptonema sp., Pomponema sp. and Innocuonema sp. indicates presence of disturbances in S12 and S13. Several species also showed potential to be introduced as indicator for healthy environment subjected to further studies on nematode-pollutants relationship, particularly on autecology as per se. Higher species diversity, H’ index of S1-S8 and S11 was categorised as Good Condition; followed by station with moderate species diversity index (S9, S10, S14 –Moderate Condition) zone; and lastly S12, S13 and S15 (Poor Condition)

Deficiency of the LIM-Only Protein FHL2 Reduces Intestinal Tumorigenesis in Apc Mutant Mice
BACKGROUND: The four and a half LIM-only protein 2 (FHL2) is capable of shuttling between focal adhesion and nucleus where it signals through direct interaction with a number of proteins including beta-catenin. Although FHL2 activation has been found in various human cancers, evidence of its functional contribution to carcinogenesis has been lacking. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we have investigated the role of FHL2 in intestinal tumorigenesis in which activation of the Wnt pathway by mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli gene (Apc) or in beta-catenin constitutes the primary transforming event. In this murine model, introduction of a biallelic deletion of FHL2 into mutant Apc(Delta14/+) mice substantially reduces the number of intestinal adenomas but not tumor growth, suggesting a role of FHL2 in the initial steps of tumorigenesis. In the lesions, Wnt signalling is not affected by FHL2 deficiency, remaining constitutively active. Nevertheless, loss of FHL2 activity is associated with increased epithelial cell migration in intestinal epithelium, which might allow to eliminate more efficiently deleterious cells and reduce the risk of tumorigenesis. This finding may provide a mechanistic basis for tumor suppression by FHL2 deficiency. In human colorectal carcinoma but not in low-grade dysplasia, we detected up-regulation and enhanced nuclear localization of FHL2, indicating the activation of FHL2 during the development of malignancy. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our data demonstrate that FHL2 represents a critical factor in intestinal tumorigenesis
