    Flow pattern analysis for magnetic resonance velocity imaging

    Blood flow in the heart is highly complex. Although blood flow patterns have been investigated by both computational modelling and invasive/non-invasive imaging techniques, their evolution and intrinsic connection with cardiovascular disease has yet to be explored. Magnetic resonance (MR) velocity imaging provides a comprehensive distribution of multi-directional in vivo flow distribution so that detailed quantitative analysis of flow patterns is now possible. However, direct visualisation or quantification of vector fields is of little clinical use, especially for inter-subject or serial comparison of changes in flow patterns due to the progression of the disease or in response to therapeutic measures. In order to achieve a comprehensive and integrated description of flow in health and disease, it is necessary to characterise and model both normal and abnormal flows and their effects. To accommodate the diversity of flow patterns in relation to morphological and functional changes, we have described in this thesis an approach of detecting salient topological features prior to analytical assessment of dynamical indices of the flow patterns. To improve the accuracy of quantitative analysis of the evolution of topological flow features, it is essential to restore the original flow fields so that critical points associated with salient flow features can be more reliably detected. We propose a novel framework for the restoration, abstraction, extraction and tracking of flow features such that their dynamic indices can be accurately tracked and quantified. The restoration method is formulated as a constrained optimisation problem to remove the effects of noise and to improve the consistency of the MR velocity data. A computational scheme is derived from the First Order Lagrangian Method for solving the optimisation problem. After restoration, flow abstraction is applied to partition the entire flow field into clusters, each of which is represented by a local linear expansion of its velocity components. This process not only greatly reduces the amount of data required to encode the velocity distribution but also permits an analytical representation of the flow field from which critical points associated with salient flow features can be accurately extracted. After the critical points are extracted, phase portrait theory can be applied to separate them into attracting/repelling focuses, attracting/repelling nodes, planar vortex, or saddle. In this thesis, we have focused on vortical flow features formed in diastole. To track the movement of the vortices within a cardiac cycle, a tracking algorithm based on relaxation labelling is employed. The constraints and parameters used in the tracking algorithm are designed using the characteristics of the vortices. The proposed framework is validated with both simulated and in vivo data acquired from patients with sequential MR examination following myocardial infarction. The main contribution of the thesis is in the new vector field restoration and flow feature abstraction method proposed. They allow the accurate tracking and quantification of dynamic indices associated with salient features so that inter- and intra-subject comparisons can be more easily made. This provides further insight into the evolution of blood flow patterns and permits the establishment of links between blood flow patterns and localised genesis and progression of cardiovascular disease.Open acces

    Predicting the effects of frameshifting indels

    Each human has approximately 50 to 280 frameshifting indels, yet their implications are unknown. We created SIFT Indel, a prediction method for frameshifting indels that has 84% accuracy. The percentage of human frameshifting indels predicted to be gene-damaging is negatively correlated with allele frequency. We also show that although the first frameshifting indel in a gene causes loss of function, there is a tendency for the second frameshifting indel to compensate and restore protein function.     Craig Knight, Asia-Pacific Digital Business and Customer Services Manager of Eastman Chemical Company, was given a mandate to sell Eastman’s philosophy for an integrated electronic supply chain, otherwise known as the Integrated System Solution (ISS), to its business partners in the region, and to encourage adoption. Having invested in a state-of-the-art technical architecture that would support interconnectivity with all parties along the supply chain, Eastman was keen to realize the full benefits to be gained from an integrated e-supply chain on a global scale. Following numerous rounds of discussion with key business partners in the Asia- Pacific region, some progress had been made. Nagase & Co., Ltd. of Japan had agreed to adopt ISS connections with Eastman, but had some reservations regarding the extent of integration. Although the benefits of integration were proven, suppliers, customers, distributors, and other interested parties were faced with numerous limitations and considerations that would have significant implications on their established business processes and even the shaping of their corporate strategy. Adoption was not a simple choice. Craig understood these shortcomings and was making every effort to ease the adoption process by identifying the longer-term benefits to Nagase and other business partners of applying XML technology to their businesses

    Designing Vibrotactile Widgets with Printed Actuators and Sensors

    Physical controls are fabricated through complicated assembly of parts requiring expensive machinery and are prone to mechanical wear. One solution is to embed controls directly in interactive surfaces, but the proprioceptive part of gestural interaction that makes physical controls discoverable and usable solely by hand gestures is lost and has to be compensated, by vibrotactile feedback for instance. Vibrotactile actuators face the same aforementioned issues as for physical controls. We propose printed vibrotactile actuators and sensors. They are printed on plastic sheets, with piezoelectric ink for actuation, and with silver ink for conductive elements, such as wires and capacitive sensors. These printed actuators and sensors make it possible to design vibrotactile widgets on curved surfaces, without complicated mechanical assembly

    Modeling and optimization of cold extrusion process by using response surface methodology and metaheuristic approaches

    Obtaining the optimal extrusion process parameters by integration of optimization techniques was crucial and continuous engineering task in which it attempted to minimize the tool load. The tool load should be minimized as higher extrusion forces required greater capacity and energy. It may lead to increase the chance of part defects, die wear and die breakage. Besides, optimization may help to save the time and cost of producing the final product, in addition to produce better formability of work material and better quality of the finishing product. In this regard, this study aimed to determine the optimal extrusion process parameters. The minimization of punch load was the main concern, in such a way that the structurally sound product at minimum load can be achieved. Minimization of punch load during the extrusion process was first formulated as a nonlinear programming model using response surface methodology in this study. The established extrusion force model was then taken as the fitness function. Subsequently, the analytical approach and metaheuristic algorithms, specifically the particle swarm optimization, cuckoo search algorithm (CSA) and flower pollination algorithm, were applied to optimize the extrusion process parameters. Performance assessment demonstrated the promising results of all presented techniques in minimizing the tool loading.
