    Information measures for relativistic quantum spinors are constructed to satisfy various postulated properties such as normalisation invariance and positivity. Those measures are then used to motivate generalised Lagrangians meant to probe shorter distance physics within the maximum uncertainty framework. The modified evolution equations that follow are necessarily nonlinear and simultaneously violate Lorentz invariance, supporting previous heuristic arguments linking quantum nonlinearity with Lorentz violation. The nonlinear equations also break discrete symmetries. We discuss the implications of our results for physics in the neutrino sector and cosmology

    Advanced flight control system study

    A fly by wire flight control system architecture designed for high reliability includes spare sensor and computer elements to permit safe dispatch with failed elements, thereby reducing unscheduled maintenance. A methodology capable of demonstrating that the architecture does achieve the predicted performance characteristics consists of a hierarchy of activities ranging from analytical calculations of system reliability and formal methods of software verification to iron bird testing followed by flight evaluation. Interfacing this architecture to the Lockheed S-3A aircraft for flight test is discussed. This testbed vehicle can be expanded to support flight experiments in advanced aerodynamics, electromechanical actuators, secondary power systems, flight management, new displays, and air traffic control concepts

    Collaborative Project Across Three Hong Kong Universities: A Case Study in E-Commerce Education

    This paper reports on the work undertaken by three tertiary institutions in Hong Kong to provide business students with the opportunity to experience a project-based teamwork game in learning e-commerce (EC). The teaching objective of this EC project is to develop the knowledge and skills of students, such as in the use of EC site-building tools, critical thinking, communication skills, teamwork, and entrepreneurship. This study examined student attitudes toward the learning in introductory e-commerce course via a project-based teamwork game in EC using a non-traditional teaching approach. The results ofan evaluation indicate that the project-based teamwork approach performed to expectations. Based on the feedback from students from the three tertiary institutions, the project was found to facilitate the teaching and learning of EC and to be interesting, exciting, innovative, and more worthwhile than traditional textbook-based learning

    Integrable Hierarchies and Information Measures

    In this paper we investigate integrable models from the perspective of information theory, exhibiting various connections. We begin by showing that compressible hydrodynamics for a one-dimesional isentropic fluid, with an appropriately motivated information theoretic extension, is described by a general nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. Depending on the choice of the enthalpy function, one obtains the cubic NLS or other modified NLS equations that have applications in various fields. Next, by considering the integrable hierarchy associated with the NLS model, we propose higher order information measures which include the Fisher measure as their first member. The lowest members of the hiearchy are shown to be included in the expansion of a regularized Kullback-Leibler measure while, on the other hand, a suitable combination of the NLS hierarchy leads to a Wootters type measure related to a NLS equation with a relativistic dispersion relation. Finally, through our approach, we are led to construct an integrable semi-relativistic NLS equation.Comment: 11 page

    Association between cyclo-oxygenase-2 overexpression and missense p53 mutations in gastric cancer

    Wild-type p53 competitively binds to the promoter region of COX-2 in vitro and inhibits its transcription. We examined the association between p53 mutation and COX-2 expression in gastric cancer. COX-2 over-expression was seen in 19 (48.7%) cases. These tumours had more lymph-node metastasis (P = 0.048) and tended to have a poorer survival (P = 0.07). Missense mutations of p53 were detected in 20 (51.3%) patients and had a significantly stronger COX-2 expression than tumours without p53 mutation (P = 0.016). Our results suggest a link between p53 mutation and COX-2 overexpression in gastric cancer. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Information preserving structures: A general framework for quantum zero-error information

    Quantum systems carry information. Quantum theory supports at least two distinct kinds of information (classical and quantum), and a variety of different ways to encode and preserve information in physical systems. A system's ability to carry information is constrained and defined by the noise in its dynamics. This paper introduces an operational framework, using information-preserving structures to classify all the kinds of information that can be perfectly (i.e., with zero error) preserved by quantum dynamics. We prove that every perfectly preserved code has the same structure as a matrix algebra, and that preserved information can always be corrected. We also classify distinct operational criteria for preservation (e.g., "noiseless", "unitarily correctible", etc.) and introduce two new and natural criteria for measurement-stabilized and unconditionally preserved codes. Finally, for several of these operational critera, we present efficient (polynomial in the state-space dimension) algorithms to find all of a channel's information-preserving structures.Comment: 29 pages, 19 examples.     Conductance through Quantum Dots Studied by Finite Temperature DMRG

    With the Finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization Group method (FT-DMRG), we depeloped a method to calculate thermo-dynamical quantities and the conductance of a quantum dot system. Conductance is written by the local density of states on the dot. The density of states is calculated with the numerical analytic continuation from the thermal Green's function which is obtained directly from the FT-DMRG. Typical Kondo behaviors in the quantum dot system are observed conveniently by comparing the conductance with the magnetic and charge susceptibilities: Coulomb oscillation peaks and the unitarity limit.
