    Enhancement of Membrane Fouling Control in Hybrid Aerobic Membrane Bioreactor System for Domestic Waste Water Application: Effect of Alum Concentration

    AbstractAdditional of alum into the membrane bioreactor was found to be able to enhance the performance for the separation process. In this study, the influence of different alum concentrations on membrane fouling control and characteristics of activated sludge of membrane bioreactors were evaluated. Membrane bioreactor with low alum concentration of 1.0g/L was found able to provide better filterability performance compared to MBRs without and with excessive alum addition (3.0g/L and 5.0g/L). This study indicates that agglomeration of flocs and biodegradation mechanisms which took place simultaneously in the MBR with 1.0g/L of alum is able to reduce the total EPS concentration in the MBRs and subsequently contributing to better membrane fouling control

    Outcome of Percutaneous Nephrostomy for the Management of Pyonephrosis

    ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) drainage for the interim management of pyonephrosis.MethodsNinety-two consecutive patients (29 men, 63 women; mean age, 57 years; range, 23-88) who underwent PCN for the treatment of pyonephrosis from 1996 to 1999 were evaluated retrospectively. The clinical presentation, bacteriology and patient outcomes were analyzed.ResultsThe majority (77%) of patients had underlying obstructing urinary calculi. Other causes of obstruction included strictures (9%), papillary necrosis (7%), pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (4%) and malignant stricture (3%). The microorganisms cultured were Escherichia coli (30%), Klebsiella (19%), Proteus (8%), Pseudomonas (5%), Enterococcus (5%), and Candida spp (5%). The microorganisms were sensitive to gentamicin (79%), ceftriaxone (71%), cephalexin (54%), nitrofurantoin (40%), cotrimoxazole (35%), nalidixic acid (32%) and ampicillin (29%). Only 30% of bladder urine cultures were positive for microorganisms; the addition of PCN cultures improved this yield to 58%. The antibiotic regimen was revised according to the PCN culture whenever there was a discrepancy. After PCN, 69% of patients underwent minimally invasive procedures as definitive treatment of the obstructing lesion. Only 14% of patients required open surgery. There was low procedure-related morbidity (14%) and low overall mortality (2%).ConclusionsPCN cultures yield important bacteriological information. The procedure is associated with minimal morbidity, facilitates definitive treatment and provides therapeutic benefit. (Asian J Surg 2002;25(3):215-9

    Optimizing callus induction and proliferation for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of Brachypodium distachyon

    Brachypodium distachyon has emerged as the model species for important temperate grass crops such as wheat and barley and the genome of the B. distachyon community inbred line Bd21 has been sequenced. Methods for tissue culture and Agrobacterium-mediated transformation have been developed for this model grass as a resource for reverse genetics and functional genomic analyses. In order to obtain a high quantity and quality of compact embryogenic callus (CEC) in B. distachyon, it is important to examine and optimize the optimal concentration of the auxin 2,4-D (dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) to use in both callus induction and callus proliferation media. Here, we investigated the effects of different concentrations of 2,4-D on callus induction and callus proliferation of B. distachyon Bd21. Our results showed that 2.5 mg l–1 2,4-D is an optimal concentration to use for both callus induction and proliferation, although 5.0 mg l–1 may also be used for callus proliferation. Additionally, the suitability of hygromycin or bialaphos as selectable markers was examined and results indicated that hygromycin is significantly more efficient than bialaphos when using the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system

    Entangled quantum tunneling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

    We examine the quantum tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species trapped in a double well configuration. We discover the condition under which particles of different species can tunnel as pairs through the potential barrier between two wells in opposition directions. This novel form of tunneling is due to the interspecies interaction that eliminates the self- trapping effect. The correlated motion of tunneling atoms leads to the generation of quantum entanglement between two macroscopically coherent systems.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A Real Time Quality Monitoring System for the Lighting Industry: A Practical and Rapid Approach Using Computer Vision and Image Processing (CVIP) Tools

    In China, the manufacturing of lighting products is very labour intensive. The approach used to check quality and control production relies on operators who test using various types of fixtures. In order to increase the competitiveness of the manufacturer and the efficiency of production, the authors propose an integrated system. This system has two major elements: a computer vision system (CVS) and a real‐time monitoring system (RTMS). This model focuses not only on the rapid and practical application of modern technology to a traditional industry, but also represents a process innovation in the lighting industry. This paper describes the design and development of the prototyped lighting inspection system based on a practical and fast approach using computer vision and imaging processing (CVIP) tools. LabVIEW with IMAQ Vision Builder is the chosen tool for building the CVS. Experimental results show that this system produces a lower error rate than humans produce in the quality checking process. The whole integrated manufacturing strategy, aimed at achieving a better performance, is most suitable for a China and other labour intensive environments such as India.

    Visualization of Frequent Itemsets with Nested Circular Layout and Bundling Algorithm

    International audienceFrequent itemset mining is one of the major data mining issues. Once generated by algorithms, the itemsets can be automatically processed, for instance to extract association rules. They can also be explored with visual tools, in order to analyze the emerging patterns. Graphical itemsets representation is a convenient way to obtain an overview of the global interaction structure. However, when the complexity of the database increases, the network may become unreadable. In this paper, we propose to display itemsets on concentric circles, each one being organized to lower the intricacy of the graph through an optimization process. Thanks to a graph bundling algorithm, we finally obtain a compact representation of a large set of itemsets that is easier to exploit. Colors accumulation and interaction operators facilitate the exploration of the new bundle graph and to illustrate how much an itemset is supported by the data

    Association between statins and the risk of suicide attempt, depression, anxiety, and seizure: A population-based, self-controlled case series study

    Background: Risk of suicide attempt, depression, anxiety and seizure and the association with statins is an ongoing debate. We aim to investigate the association between statins and the above neuropsychological outcomes, in specific pre- and post-exposure time windows./ Methods: We identified patients aged 40–75 years old who were dispensed a statin between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2012 from the Hong Kong Clinical Data Analysis & Reporting System (CDARS), an electronic medical records database. Patients with new onset of suicide attempt, depression, anxiety and seizure were derived from the original dataset separately, in a self-controlled case series study design. A non-parametric spline-based self-controlled case series model was built to measure continuous changes of risk./ Results: We identified 396,614 statin users. The risk of each outcome was elevated prior to statin initiation with incidence rate ratios of 1.38 (95 % CI, 1.09–1.74) for suicide attempt, 1.29 (95 % CI, 1.15–1.45) for depression, 1.35 (95 % CI, 1.19–1.53) for anxiety, and 1.45 (95 % CI, 1.21–1.73) for seizure. The incidence rate ratios remained elevated after the initiation of statins during the first 90 and 91–365 days after statin prescription and decreased to the baseline level after 1 year of continuous prescription./ Limitations: CDARS includes prescription data but not adherence data, which could lead to misclassification of exposure periods./ Conclusions: Our study does not support a direct association between statin use and suicide attempt, depression, anxiety and seizure, whose risks could be explained by cardiovascular events, for which statins were prescribed

    Extension of Time (EoT) Considerations in Construction Duration Estimate for Public Construction Projects

    Construction duration is defined as the time frame given by the Client of a project use to complete the project under normal working conditions, practice of construction. However, often times, projects faced time overruns and hence, needing to activate contractual remedies like Extension of Time (EoT). This paper aims to investigate the factors related to award the Extension of Time (EoT) for construction projects in especially in the public sector in Sarawak. A structured checklist was created as an instrument and employed to accomplish the objective of this research. A total of 111 previous public projects which were granted EoT were studied. The findings revealed several detailed factors that had typically led to project delays in the State. These findings are expected to offer the construction industry stakeholders in Sarawak a focal point on those delay that could be included in construction project duration estimates and management of construction performances, followed by the appropriate corrective and improvement measures for time management for construction projects

    Connective tissue diseases of the skin are characterized by excessive collagen deposition in the skin and internal organs. Fibroblasts play a pivotal role in the clinical presentation of these conditions. Nuclear receptor peroxisome-proliferator activated receptors (PPARs) are therapeutic targets for dermal fibrosis, but the contribution of the different PPAR subtypes are poorly understood. Particularly, the role of fibroblast PPARβ/δ in dermal fibrosis has not been elucidated. Thus, we generated a mouse strain with selective deletion of PPARβ/δ in the fibroblast (FSPCre- <i>Pparb/d</i> <sup>-/-</sup> ) and interrogated its epidermal and dermal transcriptome profiles. We uncovered a downregulated gene, leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein-1 ( <i>Lrg1</i> ), of previously unknown function in skin development and architecture. Our findings suggest that the regulation of <i>Lrg1</i> by PPARβ/δ in fibroblasts is an important signaling conduit integrating PPARβ/δ and TGFβ1-signaling networks in skin health and disease. Thus, the FSPCre- <i>Pparb/d</i> <sup>-/-</sup> mouse model could serve as a novel tool in the current gunnery of animal models to better understand dermal fibrosis
