    Level raising and completed cohomology

    We describe an application of Poincar\'e duality for completed homology spaces (as defined by Emerton) to level raising for p-adic modular forms. This allows us to give a new description of the image of Chenevier's p-adic Jacquet-Langlands map between an eigencurve for a definite quaternion algebra and an eigencurve for GL(2). The points on the eigencurve at which we "raise the level" are (non-smooth) points of intersection between an "old" and a "new" component.Comment: 7 pages. Some small changes and reference update

    Characterization of a Wind Tunnel for Use in Offshore Wind Turbine Development with Mitigation Measures for the Wall Effect of Proximal Structures

    This thesis supports the development of the Harold Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering Laboratory constructed at the University of Maine through several investigations conducted with a one-third scale wind generation system. The scale wind generator is first tested in what is considered an open-circuit wind tunnel configuration to determine the influence proximal building walls of a facility housing such a device may have on the consistency and capacity of a wind generator. Turbine performance testing with the wind generator to identify any susceptibility to proximal wall influence is also conducted. This is of interest as the full-scale system will operate in different orientations within a rectangular building. Baseline wind generator performance and test turbine performance data in this configuration is established for use in comparison to alternative tunnel configurations. Additional investigations are carried out to determine the effectiveness of mitigation measures intended to reduce or eliminate any influence of proximal facility walls on wind generator performance. In these investigations any associated effects on wind generator performance and turbine performance testing must be understood. One alternative to the wind generator configuration is the conversion of the generator to a traditional wind tunnel, also known as a closed-circuit tunnel configuration, where the test flow is collected and reused by the tunnel making it immune to changes in orientation within the building. Active recirculation in the form of a bank of fans placed at the end of the test section is also investigated as an alternative method of masking the effects of nearby facility walls on wind generator and turbine testing performance. This thesis is organized into 4 chapters. Chapter 1 details the current state of the art of floating offshore wind turbine development; past efforts are discussed along with motivations for future testing endeavors. Chapter 2 outlines the experimental instrumentation and procedures used throughout this body of work. Chapter 3 chronicles the hardware used by the wind generator, its operation, and baseline data collected. Chapter 4 discusses the conversion of the wind generator in chapter 3 to a wind tunnel that is subjected to the same tests and turbine runs as the wind generator in a comparative study. This chapter also tests the sensitivity of the wind generation system, and associated turbine tests, to the intrusion of nearby facility walls. Chapter 4 also investigates the use of active recirculation as a way to mitigate any negative influence of facility infrastructure on the wind generation system. Chapter 5 summarizes the findings of this study

    The Anarchist Cinema

    There has been only a minimal amount written in academic circles on the connections between political anarchism and cinema. Alan Lovell focuses on allegorical readings of films by Jean Vigo, Luis Bunuel, and Georges Franju. Richard Porton examines the historical representation of anarchists and their ideas. More recently, Nathan Jun lays out ideas for a proposed ‘cinema of liberation’. Yet these three writers, who provide the most notable attempts at wrestling with the subject, barely refer to one another. This means that there are disconnections in the areas of existing scholarly research, and it fails to fully analyse the complex series of relationships that exist between anarchism and film. My thesis attempts to address these gaps, and suggests ways in which anarchist theory can be used as a framework to inform our understanding of cinema as a cultural and industrial institution, and also provide an alternative process of reading and interpreting films. In analysing the dynamics between anarchist theory and film, it focuses on three key areas. Firstly, it considers the notion that cinema is an inherently anarchic space, based around fears of unruly (predominantly working class) audiences. Secondly, it attempts to delineate what the criteria for an anarchist film could be, by looking at a range of formal characteristics and content featured in a number of popular movies. And thirdly, it examines the place of grassroots and DIY filmmaking in the wider context of an anarchist cinema. My thesis finds the continuities that exist between radical film culture of the present and the past, and I propose that there is an innately anarchic undercurrent to several key aspects of cinematic culture. The thesis concludes by stressing the distinction that exists between film as a text, and cinema as a range of cultural activities. I propose that the ultimate embodiment of a study of an anarchist cinema should combine film analysis with that of an examination of cinema as a social and physical space. In turn, this can help us to consider the ways in which film and cinema may form part of a culture of resistance – one which fully articulates the concerns and questions surrounding anarchist political theory

    Graduates of Character is the product of an empirical enquiry into the values, virtues, dispositions and attitudes of a sample of students and employees who volunteered to be involved. The research team sought host sites which would offer a diverse set of interviewees in gender, ethnicity, religion and aspiration. In this study we discuss what character is taken to mean by students and employees in their years of higher education and employment. We examine what their values are, what they gain from the university, what they believe employers look for when recruiting, what they hope to give to an employer, and what they expect from their employer. We then explore who or what influenced their values and moral development. We also examined the role of the personal tutor or mentor, and the persons or services to which they might go for personal and/or professional support

    Measurement of local convective heat transfer coefficients from a smooth and roughened NACA-0012 airfoil: Flight test data

    Wind tunnels typically have higher free stream turbulence levels than are found in flight. Turbulence intensity was measured to be 0.5 percent in the NASA Lewis Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) with the cloud making sprays off and around 2 percent with cloud making equipment on. Turbulence intensity for flight conditions was found to be too low to make meaningful measurements for smooth air. This difference between free stream and wing tunnel conditions has raised questions as to the validity of results obtained in the IRT. One objective of these tests was to determine the effect of free stream turbulence on convective heat transfer for the NASA Lewis LEWICE ice growth prediction code. These tests provide in-flight heat transfer data for a NASA-0012 airfoil with a 533 cm chord. Future tests will measure heat transfer data from the same airfoil in the Lewis Icing Research Tunnel. Roughness was obtained by the attachment of small, 2 mm diameter hemispheres of uniform size to the airfoil in three different patterns. Heat transfer measurements were recorded in flight on the NASA Lewis Twin Otter Icing Research Aircraft. Measurements were taken for the smooth and roughened surfaces at various aircraft speeds and angles of attack up to four degrees. Results are presented as Frossling number versus position on the airfoil for various roughnesses and angles of attack
