Hydrothermal activity lowers trophic diversity in Antarctic sedimented hydrothermal vents
Sedimented hydrothermal vents are those in which hydrothermal fluid vents through sediment and are among the least studied deep-sea ecosystems. We present a combination of microbial and biochemical data to assess trophodynamics between and within hydrothermally active and off-vent areas of the Bransfield Strait (1050â1647âm depth). Microbial composition, biomass and fatty acid signatures varied widely between and within vent and non-vent sites and provided evidence of diverse metabolic activity. Several species showed diverse feeding strategies and occupied different trophic positions in vent and non-vent areas and stable isotope values of consumers were generally not consistent with feeding structure morphology. Niche area and the diversity of microbial fatty acids reflected trends in species diversity and was lowest at the most hydrothermally active site. Faunal utilisation of chemosynthetic activity was relatively limited but was detected at both vent and non-vent sites as evidenced by carbon and sulphur isotopic signatures, suggesting that the hydrothermal activity can affect trophodynamics over a much wider area than previously thought
A Theoretical Investigation of Charge Transfer in Several Substituted Acridinium Ions
We present calculations for various properties of the ground and excited states of several arylamine-substituted acridinium ion systems that have been studied experimentally. Using ab initio and semiempirical quantum mechanical methods together with the generalized MullikenâHush (GMH) model, we examine the excitation energies, dipole moment shifts, and electronic coupling elements for the vertical charge shift (CSh) processes in these systems. We also examine solvent effects on these properties using a dielectric continuum reaction field model. The results are in generally good agreement with available experimental results and indicate that there is strong electronic coupling in these systems over a wide range of torsional angles. Nevetheless, the initial and final cationic states remain reasonably well-localized over this range, and thus TICT state formation is unlikely in these systems. Finally, a version of the GMH model based on Koopmans\u27 Theorem is developed and found to yield coupling elements generally within a factor of 2 of the many-electron GMH for a sample acridinium system, but with overestimated adiabatic and diabatic dipole moment differences
Laser writing of individual atomic defects in a crystal with near-unity yield
Atomic defects in wide band gap materials show great promise for development
of a new generation of quantum information technologies, but have been hampered
by the inability to produce and engineer the defects in a controlled way. The
nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is one of the foremost
candidates, with single defects allowing optical addressing of electron spin
and nuclear spin degrees of freedom with potential for applications in advanced
sensing and computing. Here we demonstrate a method for the deterministic
writing of individual NV centers at selected locations with high positioning
accuracy using laser processing with online fluorescence feedback. This method
provides a new tool for the fabrication of engineered materials and devices for
quantum technologies and offers insight into the diffusion dynamics of point

Intra-specific niche partitioning in Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella
Competition for resources within a population can lead to niche partitioning between sexes, throughout ontogeny and among individuals, allowing con-specifics to co-exist. We aimed to quantify such partitioning in Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, breeding at South Georgia, which hosts ~95% of the worldâs population. Whiskers were collected from 20 adult males and 20 adult females and stable isotope ratios were quantified every 5âmm along the length of each whisker. Nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) were used as proxies for trophic position and carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) indicated foraging habitat. Sexual segregation was evident: δ13C values were significantly lower in males than females, indicating males spent more time foraging south of the Polar Front in maritime Antarctica. In males δ13C values declined with age, suggesting males spent more time foraging south throughout ontogeny. In females δ13C values revealed two main foraging strategies: 70% of females spent most time foraging south of the Polar Front and had similar δ15N values to males, while 30% of females spent most time foraging north of the Polar Front and had significantly higher δ15N values. This niche partitioning may relax competition and ultimately elevate population carrying capacity with implications for ecology, evolution and conservation
Touchstone Stars: Highlights from the Cool Stars 18 Splinter Session
We present a summary of the splinter session on "touchstone stars" -- stars
with directly measured parameters -- that was organized as part of the Cool
Stars 18 conference. We discuss several methods to precisely determine cool
star properties such as masses and radii from eclipsing binaries, and radii and
effective temperatures from interferometry. We highlight recent results in
identifying and measuring parameters for touchstone stars, and ongoing efforts
to use touchstone stars to determine parameters for other stars. We conclude by
comparing the results of touchstone stars with cool star models, noting some

High spatial resolution assessment of air quality in urban centres using lichen carbon, nitrogen and sulfur contents and stable-isotope-ratio signatures
Air pollution and poor air quality is impacting human health globally and is a major cause of respiratory and cardiovascular disease and damage to human organ systems. Automated air quality monitoring stations continuously record airborne pollutant concentrations, but are restricted in number, costly to maintain and cannot document all spatial variability of airborne pollutants. Biomonitors, such as lichens, are commonly used as an inexpensive alternative to assess the degree of pollution and monitor air quality. However, only a few studies combined lichen carbon, nitrogen and sulfur contents, with their stable-isotope-ratio signatures (δ13C, δ15N and δ34S values) to assess spatial variability of air quality and to âfingerprintâ potential pollution sources. In this study, a high-spatial resolution lichen biomonitoring approach (using Xanthoria parietina and Physcia spp.) was applied to the City of Manchester (UK), the centre of the urban conurbation Greater Manchester, including considerations of its urban characteristics (e.g., building heights and traffic statistics), to investigate finer spatial detail urban air quality. Lichen wt% N and δ15N signatures, combined with lichen nitrate (NO3â) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations, suggest a complex mixture of airborne NOx and NHx compounds across Manchester. In contrast, lichen S wt%, combined with δ34S strongly suggest anthropogenic sulfur sources, whereas C wt% and δ13C signatures were not considered reliable indicators of atmospheric carbon emissions. Manchesterâs urban attributes were found to influence lichen pollutant loadings, suggesting deteriorated air quality in proximity to highly trafficked roads and densely built-up areas. Lichen elemental contents and stable-isotope-ratio signatures can be used to identify areas of poor air quality, particularly at locations not covered by automated air quality measurement stations. Therefore, lichen biomonitoring approaches provide a beneficial method to supplement automated monitoring stations and also to assess finer spatial variability of urban air quality
Effects of Concurrent Resistance and Aerobic Training on Load-Bearing Performance and the Army Physical Fitness Test
The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of high intensity endurance training (ET) and resistance training (RT) alone and in combination on various military tasks. Thirty-five male soldiers were randomly assigned to one of four training groups: total body resistance training plus endurance training (RT + ET), upper body resistance training plus endurance training [UB + ET), RT only, and ET only. Training was performed 4 days per week for 12 weeks. Testing occurred before and after the 12-week training regimen. All groups significantly improved push-up performance, whereas only the RT + ET group did not improve sit-up performance. The groups that included ET significantly decreased 2-mile run time, however, only RT + ET and UB + ET showed improved loaded 2-mile run time. Leg power increased for groups that included lower body strengthening exercises (RT and RT + ET). Army Physical Fitness Test performance, loaded running, and leg power responded positively to training, however, it appears there is a high degree of specificity when concurrent training regimens are implemented
