Subjective and Non-subjective Information in Children’s Allegations of Abuse
In this study, we were interested in how interviewers elicit subjective information in investigations of child abuse (e.g., descriptions of thoughts, emotions, opinions). Sixty-one interviews of children aged 4-12 years old were analyzed to determine the amount of subjective information versus non-subjective event details reported, and the type of question that elicited the information. Interviewers elicited more non-subjective than subjective information, although there was more focus on subjective information in the rapport-building phase than in the substantive phase when the allegations were elicited. Interviewer prompts and child responsiveness was congruent such that non-subjective questions elicited more non-subjective information, and subjective interviewer questions elicited more subjective information. The presence of subjective information in children’s testimony can influence children’s credibility, and the results of this study demonstrate that forensic interviewers play a significant part in the level of subjective information children provide
Behavioral Evaluation of Modafinil and The Abuse-related Effects of Cocaine in Rhesus Monkeys

It is not the copy of record.Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant used to promote wakefulness, and it is being evaluated clinically as an agonist-based medication to treat stimulant abuse. This is the first report of the effects of modafinil on the abuse-related effects of cocaine in nonhuman primates. Three studies were conducted to examine the behavioral effects of modafinil. In the first study, the discriminative stimulus effects of modafinil were evaluated in monkeys trained to discriminate either low (0.18 mg/kg, IM) or high (0.4 mg/kg, IM) doses of cocaine from saline. Modafinil dose-dependently substituted for cocaine in 6/7 monkeys. In the second study, the effects of chronically administered modafinil (32-56 mg/kg/day, IV) on food- and cocaine-maintained operant responding were examined. Modafinil was administered 3 times/hr for 23 hr/day to ensure stable drug levels. Chronic treatment with 32 mg/kg/day modafinil selectively reduced responding maintained by intermediate (0.003 mg/kg/inj) and peak (0.01 mg/kg/inj) reinforcing doses of cocaine, but responding maintained by higher doses of cocaine was unaffected. Food-maintained behavior did not change during chronic treatment with modafinil. In a third study, after extinction of cocaine self-administration, modafinil (32 and 56 mg/kg/day, IV) significantly increased saline self-administration on the first day of treatment. These findings indicate that modafinil shares discriminative stimulus effects with cocaine and selectively reduces responding maintained by reinforcing doses of cocaine. These data are generally consistent with clinical findings and provide new evidence that these preclinical models may be useful for predicting the effectiveness of novel medications for drug abuse treatment
Too much or too little step width variability is associated with a fall history in older persons who walk at or near normal gait speed
BACKGROUND: Decreased gait speed and increased stride time, stride length, double support time, and stance time variability have consistently been associated with falling whereas step width variability has not been strongly related to falls. The purpose was to examine the linear and nonlinear associations between gait variability and fall history in older persons and to examine the influence of gait speed. METHODS: Gait characteristics and fall history were obtained in 503 older adults (mean age = 79; 61% female) participating in the Cardiovascular Health Study who could ambulate independently. Gait characteristics were recorded from two trials on a 4 meter computerized walkway at the subject's self-selected walking speed. Gait variability was calculated as the coefficient of variation. The presence of a fall in the past 12 months was determined by interview. The nonlinear association between gait variability and fall history was examined using a simple three level classification derived from the distribution of the data and from literature based cut-points. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between step width variability (extreme or moderate) and fall history stratifying by gait speed (1.0 m/s) and controlling for age and gender. RESULTS: Step length, stance time, and step time variability did not differ with respect to fall history (p > .33). Individuals with extreme step width variability (either low or high step width variability) were more likely to report a fall in the past year than individuals with moderate step width variability. In individuals who walked ≥ 1.0 m/s (n = 281), after controlling for age, gender, and gait speed, compared to individuals with moderate step width variability individuals with either low or high step width variability were more likely to have fallen in the past year (OR and 95% CI 4.38 [1.79–10.72]). The association between step width variability and fall history was not significant in individuals who walked < 1.0 m/s (n = 224). CONCLUSION: Extreme (either too little or too much) step width variability is associated with falls in the past year in older persons who walk at or near normal gait speed and not in older persons who walk slowly (<1.0 m/s)

Pittsburgh’s Racial Demographics: Differences and Disparities provides indicators of quality of life by race and ethnicity in the Pittsburgh region. Data are provided for four groups (Whites, African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics) and for four geographic areas (city of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the U.S.). The most recent data available for the Pittsburgh area and the nation were used in this report. In some instances, however, only data from the 2000 census were available to make comparisons. It is also the case that data were not available on all of our topic areas in the same years. It is our hope to update this report every three years, particularly if the American Community Survey (which is designed to replace the decennial census) produces regular, reliable data by race for cities, counties, and regions
Sloan Digital Sky Survey Multicolor Observations of GRB010222
The discovery of an optical counterpart to GRB010222 (detected by BeppoSAX;
Piro 2001) was announced 4.4 hrs after the burst by Henden (2001a). The Sloan
Digital Sky Survey's 0.5m photometric telescope (PT) and 2.5m survey telescope
were used to observe the afterglow of GRB010222 starting 4.8 hours after the
GRB. The 0.5m PT observed the afterglow in five, 300 sec g' band exposures over
the course of half an hour, measuring a temporal decay rate in this short
period of F_nu \propto t^{-1.0+/-0.5}. The 2.5m camera imaged the counterpart
nearly simultaneously in five filters (u' g' r' i' z'), with r' = 18.74+/-0.02
at 12:10 UT. These multicolor observations, corrected for reddening and the
afterglow's temporal decay, are well fit by the power-law F_nu \propto
nu^{-0.90+/-0.03} with the exception of the u' band UV flux which is 20% below
this slope. We examine possible interpretations of this spectral shape,

The Evolution of Galaxy Mergers and Morphology at z<1.2 in the Extended Groth Strip
We present the quantitative rest-frame B morphological evolution and galaxy
merger fractions at 0.2 < z < 1.2 as observed by the All-wavelength Extended
Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS). We use the Gini coefficent and M_20
to identify major mergers and classify galaxy morphology for a volume-limited
sample of 3009 galaxies brighter than 0.4 L_B^*, assuming pure luminosity
evolution of 1.3 M_B per unit redshift. We find that the merger fraction
remains roughly constant at 10 +/- 2% for 0.2 < z < 1.2. The fraction of
E/S0/Sa increases from 21+/- 3% at z ~ 1.1 to 44 +/- 9% at z ~ 0.3, while the
fraction of Sb-Ir decreases from 64 +/- 6% at z ~ 1.1 to 47 +/- 9% at z ~ 0.3.
The majority of z 10^11 L_sun
are disk galaxies, and only ~ 15% are classified as major merger candidates.
Edge-on and dusty disk galaxies (Sb-Ir) are almost a third of the red sequence
at z ~ 1.1, while E/S0/Sa makeup over 90% of the red sequence at z ~ 0.3.
Approximately 2% of our full sample are red mergers. We conclude (1) the galaxy
merger rate does not evolve strongly between 0.2 < z < 1.2; (2) the decrease in
the volume-averaged star-formation rate density since z ~ 1 is a result of
declining star-formation in disk galaxies rather than a disappearing population
of major mergers; (3) the build-up of the red sequence at z < 1 can be
explained by a doubling in the number of spheroidal galaxies since z ~ 1.2.Comment: 24 pages, including 3 tables and 18 color figures; accepted to the

The influence of deoxygenation on Caribbean coral larval settlement and early survival
Deoxygenation is emerging as a major threat to coral reefs where it can have catastrophic effects, including mass coral mortality. Some coral species cannot survive more than a few days of exposure to low oxygen conditions, while others can tolerate deoxygenation for weeks, suggesting that coral tolerance to lowered dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations is species-specific. However, hypoxia thresholds for corals have not yet been fully defined, and more information is needed to understand if tolerance to deoxygenation is consistent across all life stages. In this study, we tested the influence of severe (1.5 mg L-1 DO) and intermediate (3.5 mg L-1 DO) deoxygenation on larval settlement and survival during the early recruitment life phase of Colpophyllia natans, Orbicella faveolata, and Pseudodiploria strigosa. Exposure to deoxygenation over a 3-day settlement period did not significantly impact larval survival nor settlement rates compared to ambient DO concentrations (6 mg L-1 DO) for all three species. However, recruit survivorship in C. natans and O. faveolata after further exposure to severe deoxygenation was reduced compared to intermediate deoxygenation and control DO conditions. After 45 days of exposure to severe deoxygenation only 2.5 ± 2.5% of the initial O. faveolata had survived the larval and recruit stages compared to 22.5 ± 4.5% in control oxygen conditions. Similarly, C. natans survival was 13.5 ± 6.0% under severe deoxygenation, compared to 41.0 ± 4.4% in the control treatment. In contrast, survival of P. strigosa larvae and recruits was not different under deoxygenation treatments compared to the control, and higher overall, relative to the other species, indicating that P. strigosa is more resilient to severe deoxygenation conditions during its earliest life stages. This study provides unique insights into species-specific variation in the tolerance of coral recruits to deoxygenation with implications for whether this life history stage may be a demographic bottleneck for three ecologically important Caribbean coral species. Given the increasing frequency and severity of deoxygenation events in Caribbean coastal waters, these results are an important contribution to the growing body of research on deoxygenation as a threat to coral reef persistence in the Anthropocene, with implications for conservation and restoration efforts integrating coral recruitment into reef recovery efforts
Embedding clinical interventions into observational studies
Novel approaches to observational studies and clinical trials could improve the cost-effectiveness and speed of translation of research. Hybrid designs that combine elements of clinical trials with observational registries or cohort studies should be considered as part of a long-term strategy to transform clinical trials and epidemiology, adapting to the opportunities of big data and the challenges of constrained budgets. Important considerations include study aims, timing, breadth and depth of the existing infrastructure that can be leveraged, participant burden, likely participation rate and available sample size in the cohort, required sample size for the trial, and investigator expertise. Community engagement and stakeholder (including study participants) support are essential for these efforts to succeed

CANDELS Observations Of The Structural Properties Of Cluster Galaxies At Z=1.62
We discuss the structural and morphological properties of galaxies in a z = 1.62 proto-cluster using near-IR imaging data from Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 data of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The cluster galaxies exhibit a clear color-morphology relation: galaxies with colors of quiescent stellar populations generally have morphologies consistent with spheroids, and galaxies with colors consistent with ongoing star formation have disk-like and irregular morphologies. The size distribution of the quiescent cluster galaxies shows a deficit of compact (less than or similar to 1 kpc), massive galaxies compared to CANDELS field galaxies at z = 1.6. As a result, the cluster quiescent galaxies have larger average effective sizes compared to field galaxies at fixed mass at greater than 90% significance. Combined with data from the literature, the size evolution of quiescent cluster galaxies is relatively slow from z similar or equal to 1.6 to the present, growing as (1 + z)(-0.6 +/- 0.1). If this result is generalizable, then it implies that physical processes associated with the denser cluster region seem to have caused accelerated size growth in quiescent galaxies prior to z = 1.6 and slower subsequent growth at z < 1.6 compared to galaxies in the lower density field. The quiescent cluster galaxies at z = 1.6 have higher ellipticities compared to lower redshift samples at fixed mass, and their surface-brightness profiles suggest that they contain extended stellar disks. CANDELS Multi-wavelength Catalogs: Source Detection and Photometry in the GOODS-South Field
We present a UV-to-mid infrared multi-wavelength catalog in the
CANDELS/GOODS-S field, combining the newly obtained CANDELS HST/WFC3 F105W,
F125W, and F160W data with existing public data. The catalog is based on source
detection in the WFC3 F160W band. The F160W mosaic includes the data from
CANDELS deep and wide observations as well as previous ERS and HUDF09 programs.
The mosaic reaches a 5 limiting depth (within an aperture of radius
0.17 arcsec) of 27.4, 28.2, and 29.7 AB for CANDELS wide, deep, and HUDF
regions, respectively. The catalog contains 34930 sources with the
representative 50% completeness reaching 25.9, 26.6, and 28.1 AB in the F160W
band for the three regions. In addition to WFC3 bands, the catalog also
includes data from UV (U-band from both CTIO/MOSAIC and VLT/VIMOS), optical
(HST/ACS F435W, F606W, F775W, F814W, and F850LP), and infrared (HST/WFC3 F098M,
VLT/ISAAC Ks, VLT/HAWK-I Ks, and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 m)
observations. The catalog is validated via stellar colors, comparison with
other published catalogs, zeropoint offsets determined from the best-fit
templates of the spectral energy distribution of spectroscopically observed
objects, and the accuracy of photometric redshifts. The catalog is able to
detect unreddened star-forming (passive) galaxies with stellar mass of
10^{10}M_\odot at a 50% completeness level to z3.4 (2.8), 4.6 (3.2), and
7.0 (4.2) in the three regions. As an example of application, the catalog is
used to select both star-forming and passive galaxies at z2--4 via the
Balmer break. It is also used to study the color--magnitude diagram of galaxies
