This was late August 1971. After a few pleasantries, it became clear that this was not just the courtesy call of a new dean reporting in to the top leader of the state university. Chancellor Boyer went right to the point: a new Labor College was going to open on the premises of Local 3 IBEW’s training facility on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan, and the ILR School had to be there as a partner.     Virtual Lesions of the IFG Abolish Response Facilitation for Biological and Non-Biological Cues

    Humans are faster to perform a given action following observation of that same action. Converging evidence suggests that the human mirror neuron system (MNS) plays an important role in this phenomenon. However, the specificity of the neural mechanisms governing this effect remain controversial. Specialist theories of imitation suggest that biological cues are maximally capable of eliciting imitative facilitation. Generalist models, on the other hand, posit a broader role for the MNS in linking visual stimuli with appropriate responses. In the present study, we investigated the validity of these two theoretical approaches by disrupting the left and right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) during the preparation of congruent (imitative) and incongruent (complementary) actions cued by either biological (hand) or non-biological (static dot) stimuli. Delivery of TMS over IFG abolished imitative response facilitation. Critically, this effect was identical whether actions were cued by biological or non-biological stimuli. This finding argues against theories of imitation in which biological stimuli are treated preferentially and stresses the notion of the IFG as a vital center of general perception–action coupling in the human brain

    Time to Treat: A System Redesign Focusing on Decreasing the Time from Suspicion of Lung Cancer to Diagnosis

    IntroductionMultiple investigations often result in a lengthy process from the onset of lung cancer–related symptoms until diagnosis. An unpublished chart audit indicated suboptimal delays in patients' courses from onset of symptoms until diagnosis of cancer.MethodsThe Time to Treat Program was designed for patients with clinical or radiographic suspicion of lung cancer. Pre- and postimplementation data on median wait times were compared.ResultsFrom April 2005 to January 2007, 430 patients were referred. After Time to Treat Program implementation, the median time from suspicion of lung cancer to referral for specialist consultation decreased from 20 days to 6 days, and the median time from such referral to the actual consultation date decreased from 17 days to 4 days. The median time from specialist consultation to computed tomography scan decreased from 52 days to 3 days, and the median time from computed tomography scan to diagnosis decreased from 39 days to 6 days. Overall, the median time from suspicion of lung cancer to diagnosis decreased from 128 days to 20 days. Of all patients in the Time to Treat Program, 33% were eventually diagnosed with lung cancer.ConclusionsTime to Treat Program was effective in shortening the time from suspicion of lung cancer to diagnosis and reduced time intervals at each step in the process. Earlier diagnosis of lung cancer may allow increased treatment options for patients and may improve outcomes

    Characterization of Titanium Alloys Produced by Electron Beam Directed Energy Deposition

    Functionally graded materials offer the potential to improve structural efficiency by allowing the material composition and/or microstructural features to spatially vary within a component. Additive manufacturing techniques enable the fabrication of such graded materials and structures. While examining several titanium alloys, this paper focuses on Ti-8Al-1Er as it has a unique microstructure that is only feasible when produced by rapid solidification methods like electron beam directed energy deposition, an additive manufacturing process. The results show that, when mixed, Ti-8Al-1Er and commercially-pure titanium uniformly mix at various ratios and the resultant static tensile properties of the mixed alloys behave according to rule-of-mixtures. At discontinuous interfaces between Ti-8Al-1Er and commercially-pure titanium, the crack growth behavior progresses smoothly across the discontinuity as the crack transitions from one crack growth regime into another. Studies on monolithic samples shows the mechanisms of damage in the Ti-8Al-1Er; specifically, that strain localization occurs near grain boundaries of high mis-orientation on the microscale and that twinning and dislocation density is concentrated near erbia-strengthening particles (Er2O3) on the nanoscale
