Circular Scan Streak Tube Development
A streak tube having circular scan was designed, built and tested. Continuous circular scan, easily derived from out of phase sine waves applied to the conventional deflection plates, permits the timing of pulses traveling long baselines. At the tube's output a circular array of 720 elements is scanned to provide 30 to 40 picosecond resolution. Initial difficulties with electron bombarded silicon arrays were circumvented by using microchannel plates within the streak tube to provide the needed electronic amplification and digital sensitivity and coupling the 720 element arrays to the electron beam by means of a phosphor on a fiber optics. Carbon Detonation and Shock-Triggered Helium Burning in Neutron Star Superbursts
The strong degeneracy of the 12C ignition layer on an accreting neutron star
results in a hydrodynamic thermonuclear runaway, in which the nuclear heating
time becomes shorter than the local dynamical time. We model the resulting
combustion wave during these superbursts as an upward propagating detonation.
We solve the reactive fluid flow and show that the detonation propagates
through the deepest layers of fuel and drives a shock wave that steepens as it
travels upward into lower density material. The shock is sufficiently strong
upon reaching the freshly accreted H/He layer that it triggers unstable 4He
burning if the superburst occurs during the latter half of the regular Type I
bursting cycle; this is likely the origin of the bright Type I precursor bursts
observed at the onset of superbursts. The cooling of the outermost shock-heated
layers produces a bright, ~0.1s, flash that precedes the Type I burst by a few
seconds; this may be the origin of the spike seen at the burst onset in 4U
1820-30 and 4U 1636-54, the only two bursts observed with RXTE at high time
resolution. The dominant products of the 12C detonation are 28Si, 32S, and
36Ar. Gupta et al. showed that a crust composed of such intermediate mass
elements has a larger heat flux than one composed of iron-peak elements and
helps bring the superburst ignition depth into better agreement with values

An Ecological Study of the Lagoons Surrounding the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Brevard County, Florida
The studies reported here are the result of a three year effort to define the major biological, microbiological, chemical and geological characteristics of the water of the Indian River lagoon around the Kennedy Space Center and to determine the movements of those waters within and between the various basins. This work was the result of a jointly funded agreement between the Florida Institute of Technology and John F. Kennedy Space Center, NASA under NASA Grant NGR 10-015-008, dated April 11, 1972. This cost sharing grant was renewed for each of two successive years. Sampling operations were terminated August 31, 1975
Stellar Dynamics at the Galactic Center with an Extremely Large Telescope
We discuss experiments achievable via monitoring of stellar dynamics near the
massive black hole at the Galactic center with a next generation, extremely
large telescope (ELT). Given the likely observational capabilities of an ELT
and current knowledge of the stellar environment at the Galactic center, we
synthesize plausible samples of stellar orbits around the black hole. We use
the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to evaluate the constraints that orbital
monitoring places on the matter content near the black hole. Results are
expressed as functions of the number N of stars with detectable orbital motions
and the astrometric precision dtheta and spectroscopic precision dv at which
stellar proper motions and radial velocities are monitored. For N = 100, dtheta
= 0.5 mas, and dv = 10 km/s -- a conservative estimate of the capabilities of a
30 meter telescope -- the extended matter distribution enclosed by the orbits
will produce measurable deviations from Keplerian motion if >1000 Msun is
enclosed within 0.01 pc. The black hole mass and distance to the Galactic
center will be measured to better than ~0.1%. Lowest-order relativistic
effects, such as the prograde precession, will be detectable if dtheta < 0.5
mas. Higher-order effects, including frame dragging due to black hole spin,
requires dtheta < 0.05 mas, or the favorable discovery of a compact, highly
eccentric orbit. Finally, we calculate the rate at which monitored stars
undergo detectable nearby encounters with background stars. Such encounters
probe the mass function of stellar remnants that accumulate near the black
hole. We find that ~30 encounters will be detected over a 10 yr baseline for

One Pulmonary Lesion, 2 Synchronous Malignancies
Introduction. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) comprises approximately 3% to 10% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Although there is an increased risk for secondary malignancies after treatment among non-Hodgkin lymphomas survivors, a synchronous diagnosis of primary lung cancer arising in conjunction with lymphoma at the same site has rarely been reported. We report an unusual case of primary lung adenocarcinoma with coexistent MCL within the same lung lesion. Case Presentation. A 55-year-old female with newly diagnosed stage IV-B MCL was referred for workup of a right upper lobe cavitary lesion detected during lymphoma staging. A whole-body positron-emission tomography-computed tomography scan revealed diffuse adenopathy but also identified a cavitary right upper lobe lesion atypical for lymphoma. Bronchoscopy was unremarkable with cytology (on lavage) negative for malignancy. At 2 months, a computed tomography scan of the chest showed a persistent lesion. A video-assisted thoracoscopic wedge resection was performed. Histopathological examination revealed a lepidic predominant, well-differentiated adenocarcinoma (stage T1a) and foci of lymphoid infiltrate within and adjacent to the adenocarcinoma consistent with lung involvement by MCL. Discussion. Synchronous presentation of primary lung adenocarcinoma and lymphoma at a single site is exceedingly rare. Nonresolving pulmonary lesions with features atypical for lymphoma should be viewed with caution and worked up comprehensively to rule out occult second malignancies, in order to guide a prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment

A small oxazine compound as an anti-tumor agent: A novel pyranoside mimetic that binds to VEGF, HB-EGF, and TNF-α
A novel pyranoside mimetic compound, DMBO (2-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-oxa-3-azaspiro5.5undecane), was designed and synthesized. The sugar mimicking behavior of DMBO was addressed by its ability to bind several growth factors/cytokines such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α as demonstrated by the recently developed surface plasmon resonance assay. DMBO exhibited strong anti-proliferation activity in vitro against tumor cells including a highly metastatic murine osteosarcoma cell line LM8G7 that secretes VEGF as well as two human ovarian cell lines, OVSAHO and SKOV-3, which secrete TNF-α and HB-EGF respectively. Furthermore, DMBO inhibited the metastatic activity to the mouse liver of LM8G7 cells injected from a lateral tail vein, and affected the heparan-degrading activity of LM8G7 cells. Here, we report that DMBO acts as a human heparanase inhibitor in vitro possibly as a substrate mimetic. DMBO also inhibited the migration and invasion of LM8G7 cells and angiogenic events such as endothelial cell proliferation, migration and capillary tube-like formation in vitro. More prominently, the administration of DMBO with heparin resulted in synergistic anti-tumor effects in mouse model. of. osteosarcoma. These preclinical data shows the potential anti-cancer effects of DMBO. © 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd
