    Oxidation of monoterpenes catalysed by a water-soluble Mn(III) PEG-porphyrin in a biphasic medium

    It is well established that the transformation of abundant and cheap natural products, such as terpenoids, can produce other more valuable compounds. Thymoquinone, which has a commercial value significantly higher than that of its precursors, can be obtained by oxidation of carvacrol and thymol. In this work, a new water-soluble Mn-III PEG-porphyrin is reported as catalyst in a water/hexane (1:1) biphasic medium for the oxidation of carvacrol and thymol into thymoquinone. The reactions were performed using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as oxidant in the presence of ammonium acetate as co-catalyst, reaching 94 and 78% of conversion after 5 h of reaction for thymol and carvacrol, respectively. Experiments with oregano essential oil as substrate revealed selective transformation of thymol and carvacrol into thymoquinone. The main advantage of this biphasic system based on a water-soluble catalyst and on substrates and products soluble in hexane, is the straightforward isolation, recovery and recycling of the catalyst by simple phase separation.     Numerical modeling evaluation of the impacts of shrimp farming operations on long-term coastal lagoon morphodynamics

The final version is available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.In coastal systems occupied by large clusters of pond aquaculture farms, hydro-sedimentary processes may be impacted by the combination of water management strategies that are individually performed by each cultivation unit. In this study, a numerical model was used to evaluate 100-year morphological alterations in two different idealized coastal lagoons surrounded by shrimp ponds. One is broadly based on the Guaraíras Lagoon System (RN, Brazil) where shrimp farming has developed since 1924, and the other is highly simplified to systematically investigate pond aquaculture impacts. Information obtained through numerical simulations (e.g., hypsometry changes, evolution of morphological parameters, balance of sediment volumes, bed level changes, and residual bed shear stress variations) provided coastal impact assessments for a wide variety of aquaculture occupation scenarios. Key findings include (i) water exchange operations performed by aquaculture farms are capable of modifying the morphological equilibrium state of a coastal lagoon system, especially if carried out synchronously to the local tidal oscillation; (ii) water intake operations regularly performed by pond aquaculture activity increase sediment import to the system; (iii) depth and configuration of tidal channels are modified when pond aquaculture is present. The modeling approach and analyses presented here can be extended to other systems that are under the influence of shrimp farming activity and be adopted to support novel regulations for the conservation of coastal habitats and to contribute to the sustainable development of pond aquaculture in the coastal zone.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, Brazil (CAPES

    Charge effect on the photoinactivation of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by cationic meso-substituted porphyrins

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In recent times photodynamic antimicrobial therapy has been used to efficiently destroy Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria using cationic porphyrins as photosensitizers. There is an increasing interest in this approach, namely in the search of photosensitizers with adequate structural features for an efficient photoinactivation process. In this study we propose to compare the efficiency of seven cationic porphyrins differing in <it>meso</it>-substituent groups, charge number and charge distribution, on the photodynamic inactivation of a Gram (+) bacterium (<it>Enterococcus faecalis</it>) and of a Gram (-) bacterium (<it>Escherichia coli</it>). The present study complements our previous work on the search for photosensitizers that might be considered good candidates for the photoinactivation of a large spectrum of environmental microorganisms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Bacterial suspension (10<sup>7 </sup>CFU mL<sup>-1</sup>) treated with different photosensitizers concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 μM) were exposed to white light (40 W m<sup>-2</sup>) for a total light dose of 64.8 J cm<sup>-2</sup>. The most effective photosensitizers against both bacterial strains were the Tri-Py<sup>+</sup>-Me-PF and Tri-Py<sup>+</sup>-Me-CO<sub>2</sub>Me at 5.0 μM with a light fluence of 64.8 J cm<sup>-2</sup>, leading to > 7.0 log (> 99,999%) of photoinactivation. The tetracationic porphyrin also proved to be a good photosensitizer against both bacterial strains. Both di-cationic and the monocationic porphyrins were the least effective ones.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The number of positive charges, the charge distribution in the porphyrins' structure and the <it>meso</it>-substituent groups seem to have different effects on the photoinactivation of both bacteria. As the Tri-Py<sup>+</sup>-Me-PF porphyrin provides the highest log reduction using lower light doses, this photosensitizer can efficiently photoinactivate a large spectrum of environmental bacteria. The complete inactivation of both bacterial strains with low light fluence (40 W m<sup>-2</sup>) means that the photodynamic approach can be applied to wastewater treatment under natural light conditions which makes this technology cheap and feasible in terms of the light source.</p

    Testing Evolutionary and Dispersion Scenarios for the Settlement of the New World

    Background: Discussion surrounding the settlement of the New World has recently gained momentum with advances in molecular biology, archaeology and bioanthropology. Recent evidence from these diverse fields is found to support different colonization scenarios. The currently available genetic evidence suggests a ""single migration'' model, in which both early and later Native American groups derive from one expansion event into the continent. In contrast, the pronounced anatomical differences between early and late Native American populations have led others to propose more complex scenarios, involving separate colonization events of the New World and a distinct origin for these groups. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using large samples of Early American crania, we: 1) calculated the rate of morphological differentiation between Early and Late American samples under three different time divergence assumptions, and compared our findings to the predicted morphological differentiation under neutral conditions in each case; and 2) further tested three dispersal scenarios for the colonization of the New World by comparing the morphological distances among early and late Amerindians, East Asians, Australo-Melanesians and early modern humans from Asia to geographical distances associated with each dispersion model. Results indicate that the assumption of a last shared common ancestor outside the continent better explains the observed morphological differences between early and late American groups. This result is corroborated by our finding that a model comprising two Asian waves of migration coming through Bering into the Americas fits the cranial anatomical evidence best, especially when the effects of diversifying selection to climate are taken into account.
