    Onze maatschappij is de afgelopen eeuw sterk veranderd. Waren vroeger boeren meer regel dan uitzondering, tegenwoordig is dat anders. Daardoor komen burgers steeds minder in contact met boeren en hebben zij niet of nauwelijks meer weet van wat op het boerenbedrijf precies speelt. Deze kloof van onwetendheid leidt tot een discrepantie tussen wat burgers denken dat zich afspeelt op het boerenbedrijf en wat daadwerkelijk daar gebeurt. Het debat over de veehouderij wordt nu dan ook grotendeels op basis van emotie gevoerd, en niet op basis van onderliggende feiten of waarden. In dit essay pleiten wij ervoor om deze kloof te dichten, zodat de kwaliteit van de discussie over de toekomst van de veehouderij kan verbeteren

    Modification of the twist angle in chiral nematic polymer films by photoisomerization of the chiral dopant

    A method for the production of polarization sensitive recordings in liquid crystalline polymers is presented. The system is based on local modification of the twist angle of chiral nematic polymer films. The twist angle of the polymer film is varied by modifying the chemical structure of the chiral dopant. Here a photoisomerizable menthone derivative is used that has a fivefold difference in helical twisting power between the E and the Z isomer. The twist angle of the film can be varied between –90° and 0° by introducing a nonphotosensitive chiral dopant with opposite twisting sense. Complex pictures with gray scales can be recorded in the films with black and white contrasts higher than 20

    Prognostic factors for relapse and outcome in pediatric acute transverse myelitis

    Objective: It may be difficult for clinicians to estimate the prognosis of pediatric acute transverse myelitis (ATM). The aim of this study was to define prognostic factors for relapsing disease and poor outcome in pediatric ATM.Methods: This prospective cohort study included 49 children, 18 boys and 31 girls (median age 13.1 years, IQR 6.5-16.2) with a first episode of ATM. Factors associated with relapsing disease and poor outcome (Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) &gt;= 4) were assessed during a median follow-up of 37 months (IQR 18-75).Results: In total, 14 patients (29%) experienced &gt;= 1 relapse(s) and nine patients (18%) had a poor outcome. Factors at onset associated with relapsing disease included higher age (16.1 vs. 11.6 years, p = 0.002), longer time to maximum severity of symptoms (5.5 vs. 3 days, p = 0.01), lower maximum EDSS score (4.0 vs. 6.5, p = 0.003), short lesion on spinal MRI (64 vs. 21%, p = 0.006), abnormalities on brain MRI (93 vs. 44%, p = 0.002) and presence of oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluid (67 vs. 14%, p = 0.004). The only factor associated with poor outcome was presence of a spinal cord lesion on MRI without cervical involvement (56 vs. 14%, p = 0.02).Conclusion: Pediatric ATM patients presenting with clinical, radiological and laboratory features associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) are at risk for relapsing disease. In absence of these known MS risk factors at onset of disease these patients are at low risk for relapses. Only a minority of pediatric ATM patients in this cohort have a poor outcome.     Ice Crystal Icing Physics Study using a NACA 0012 Airfoil at the National Research Council of Canada's Research Altitude Test Facility

    This paper presents results from a study of the fundamental physics of ice-crystal ice accretion using a NACA 0012 airfoil at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) Research Altitude Test Facility in August 2017. These tests were a continuation of work which began in 2010 as part of a joint collaboration between NASA and NRC. The research seeks to generate icing conditions representative of those that occur inside a jet engine when ingesting ice crystals. In this test, an airfoil was exposed to mixed-phase icing conditions and the resulting ice accretions were recorded and analyzed. This paper details the specific objectives, procedures, and measurements which included the aero-thermal and cloud measurements. The objectives were built upon observations and hypothesis generated from several previous test campaigns regarding mixed-phase ice-crystal icing. The specific objectives included (A) ice accretions under different wet-bulb temperatures, (B) investigations of steady-state ice shapes previously reported in the literature, (C) total water content variations in search of a threshold for accretion, and (D) probe characterization related to measuring melt fraction which is important to characterize the mixed-phase condition. The resulting ice accretions and conditions leading to such accretions are intended to help extend NASAs predictive ice-accretion codes to include conditions occurring in engine ice-crystal icing

    Pregnancy in multiple sclerosis: clinical and self-report scales

    Relapse rate is decreased during pregnancy in multiple sclerosis (MS). Risk for postpartum relapse is increased in the first 3 months after delivery. We aimed to study clinical course of MS around pregnancy, using clinical as well as self-report scales, including data on quality of life (QoL), and to identify clinical factors predisposing for postpartum relapse. We performed a prospective, longitudinal study among 35 MS patients and 20 controls. In patients we assessed expanded disability status scale (EDSS), the Guy’s neurological disability scale (GNDS) and the multiple sclerosis impact scale 29 (MSIS-29). In patients and controls we assessed the MOS 36 item short form health survey questionnaire (SF36), consisting of eight domains. The previously described surge in relapses after delivery was also obvious in this study (p = 0.005). At group level EDSS and MSIS-29 did not show overt fluctuations over time. The GNDS, however, improved during the third trimester, compared to the first trimester (p = 0.003). A concomitant improvement in the SF36 domains vitality (p < 0.001) and general health (p = 0.001) was found in patients. At the final visit, at least 9 months after delivery, no worsening of EDSS, GNDS, MSIS-29 or SF36 was observed compared with the (for MS, beneficial) third trimester. Duration of disease, relapses in the year preceding pregnancy or relapses during pregnancy were not associated with postpartum relapse. QoL is improved during pregnancy. Although relapse rate was increased directly after delivery, in the mid long term after delivery no adverse effects of pregnancy on MS were found

    There is increasing knowledge on the role of antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-abs) in acquired demyelinating syndromes and autoimmune encephalitis in children. Better understanding and prediction of outcome is essential to guide treatment protocol decisions. Therefore, this part of the Paediatric European Collaborative Consensus provides an oversight of existing knowledge of clinical outcome assessment in paediatric MOG-ab-associated disorders (MOGAD). The large heterogeneity in disease phenotype, disease course, treatment and follow-up protocols is a major obstacle for reliable prediction of outcome.     Multiple sclerosis risk variants influence the peripheral B-cell compartment early in life in the general population

    Background and purpose: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with abnormal B-cell function, and MS genetic risk alleles affect multiple genes that are expressed in B cells. However, how these genetic variants impact the B-cell compartment in early childhood is unclear. In the current study, we aim to assess whether polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for MS are associated with changes in the blood B-cell compartment in children from the general population. Methods: Six-year-old children from the population-based Generation R Study were included. Genotype data were used to calculate MS-PRSs and B-cell subset-enriched MS-PRSs, established by designating risk loci based on expression and function. Analyses of variance were performed to examine the effect of MS-PRSs on total B-cell numbers (n = 1261) as well as naive and memory subsets (n = 675). Results: After correction for multiple testing, no significant associations were observed between MS-PRSs and total B-cell numbers and frequencies of subsets therein. A naive B-cell-MS-PRS (n = 26 variants) was significantly associated with lower relative, but not absolute, naive B-cell numbers (p = 1.03 × 10−4 and p = 0.82, respectively), and higher frequencies and absolute numbers of CD27+ memory B cells (p = 8.83 × 10−4 and p = 4.89 × 10−3, respectively). These associations remained significant after adjustment for Epstein–Barr virus seropositivity and the HLA-DRB1*15:01 genotype. Conclusions: The composition of the blood B-cell compartment is associated with specific naive B-cell-associated MS risk variants during childhood, possibly contributing to MS pathophysiology later in life. Cell subset-specific PRSs may offer a more sensitive tool to define the impact of genetic risk on the immune system in diseases such as MS.</p

    Polyethylene Based Ionomers as High Voltage Insulation Materials

    Polyethylene based ionomers are demonstrated to feature a thermo-mechanical and dielectric property portfolio that is comparable to cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), which may enable the design of more sustainable high voltage direct-current (HVDC) power cables, a crucial component of future electricity grids that seamlessly integrate renewable sources of energy. A new type of ionomer is obtained via high-pressure/high-temperature free radical copolymerization of ethylene in the presence of small amounts of ion-pair comonomers comprising amine terminated methacrylates and methacrylic acid. The synthesized ionomers feature a crystallinity, melting temperature, rubber plateau modulus and thermal conductivity like XLPE but remain melt-processable. Moreover, the preparation of the ionomers is free of byproducts, which readily yields a highly insulating material with a low dielectric loss tangent and a low direct-current (DC) electrical conductivity of 1 to 6\ub710−14\ua0S\ua0m−1 at 70\ua0\ub0C and an electric field of 30\ua0kV\ua0mm−1. Evidently, the investigated ionomers represent a promising alternative to XLPE-based high voltage insulation, which may permit to ease the production as well as end-of-use recycling of HVDC power cables by combining the advantages of thermoset and thermoplastic materials while avoiding the formation of byproducts
