Typical coloboma associated with anterior chamber cleavage syndrome, and microcornea: description of one case

    Get PDF
The authors describe a rare association of bilateral typical coloboma, microcornea and anterior chamber cleavage deficience. They also discuss the embriology and the difficulties to identify if the continuous and insidious vision impairment is due to coloboma or to other associated disease, like glaucoma. Supplementary tests, such as visual field, ophthalmoscopy, and tonometry are not reliable because of the presence of nistagmus and low visual acuity.

The lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital syndrome (LADD): case report and literature review

Levy-Hollister or lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD) syndrome is a rare entity with autossomic dominant inheritance occuring as an isolated form or affecting many family generations. Diagnosis is based on the identification of the lacrimal drainage system abnormalities with reduction or absence of tear production and bone, teeth, salivar glands and outer ear abnormalities. A 13 year-old male patient has been followed at the Hospital Servidor Público Estadual in São Paulo due to dry eye since his first year of life. Due to the occurrence of early ocular manifestations in patients with Levy-Hollister or lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital syndrome, ophthalmologists must be aware to recognize and control this syndrome.

Cultural Vibrations: Measuring the Dominant Creative Class in Times of Conflict: West Jerusalem 2014 to 2016, A Case Study

When walking in Jerusalem one cannot help but notice the presence of political and religious street art. Slogans, portraits of political and religious figures, ironic political statements, and religious symbols are spray painted, hung, or plastered in public view. At first glance the city seems to be peppered with political expression originating from authentic roots of civil society- the artisan social commentators. However, upon reflection, one comes to notice that much of the paint is chipped, and the political commentary is no longer relevant to contemporary issues. It is puzzling that a population having just achieved renewed dominant status in a military operation (Operation Protective Edge, 2014), simultaneously experiences a decline in private political-cultural participation, specifically through street art. This study measures the fluctuations in street art in Jerusalem going back, before summer 2014 to capture the decline in street art during military operations. This study finds that decline in creative class public expression is linked primarily to intervening institutions working to stimulate culture in Jerusalem. We attribute part of this observed cultural lull to such institutions stopping to stimulate culture, specifically, during military operations

Comparison of Several Methods of Predicting the Pressure Loss at Altitude Across a Baffled Aircraft-Engine Cylinder

Several methods of predicting the compressible-flow pressure loss across a baffled aircraft-engine cylinder were analytically related and were experimentally investigated on a typical air-cooled aircraft-engine cylinder. Tests with and without heat transfer covered a wide range of cooling-air flows and simulated altitudes from sea level to 40,000 feet. Both the analysis and the test results showed that the method based on the density determined by the static pressure and the stagnation temperature at the baffle exit gave results comparable with those obtained from methods derived by one-dimensional-flow theory. The method based on a characteristic Mach number, although related analytically to one-dimensional-flow theory, was found impractical in the present tests because of the difficulty encountered in defining the proper characteristic state of the cooling air. Accurate predictions of altitude pressure loss can apparently be made by these methods, provided that they are based on the results of sea-level tests with heat transfer

The Perceptions of Four Novice Occupational Therapists\u27 Preparedness and Ability to Perform Occupation-Based Practice in Pediatric Practice

Although occupation-based practice (OBP) is considered best practice within the occupational therapy profession, practitioners continue to have a difficult time actively implementing OBP into treatment. The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards necessitate the implementation of OBP. Within the literature, there are gaps in the research investigating novice therapists’ perceptions of incorporating OBP in practice, especially in the United States. Since children and youth is a rapidly growing area of practice, this study focused on investigating how novice therapists are implementing OBP in pediatric settings. This qualitative study therefore investigated the perceptions of four novice pediatric occupational therapists’ preparedness and ability to perform OBP in practice. By following a qualitative methodology, the following four themes emerged from the data: My academic program introduced me to the principles of OBP, but specific types of learning activities solidified my understanding; I generally know what OBP is, and it is important; but can be difficult to describe succinctly to others; The type of setting where I work influences how occupation-based I can be during intervention; and While I have every intention of providing OBP, the cultural environment of the workplace influences my progress. These findings can add an in-depth understanding of the four participants’ experiences as they relate to this profession-wide call to action
