    Estimation of kinetic parameters in a chromatographic separation model via Bayesian inference

    A modelagem de processos de adsorção tem sido empregada com frequência nas indústrias químicas, petroquímicas e refinarias, por exemplo para separação e purificação de misturas em unidade de Leito Móvel Simulado (LMS). Na representação matemática do modelo, a determinação de parâmetros é um passo importante para o projeto de condições cromatográficas para a separação contínua, em processos do tipo LMS. Este trabalho tem por objetivo a análise de estimativa de parâmetros em processos de adsorção, usando um sistema cromatográfico com uma coluna, para a separação das substâncias Glicose e Frutose. Investiga-se o uso da abordagem Bayesiana, através de métodos de Monte Carlo via Cadeias de Markov (MCMC), assim como o uso da abordagem da máxima verossimilhança, utilizando duas técnicas estocásticas diferentes, o Algoritmo de Colisão de Partículas (PCA - Particle Collision Algorithm), e o Algoritmo de Otimização por Enxame de Partículas (PSO - Particle Swarm Optimization) para executar a tarefa de minimização da função objetivo. Diferentes casos são apresentados com o objetivo de analisar a significância estatística das estimativas obtidas para os parâmetros, fazendo-se uma comparação crítica entre a solução via inferência Bayesiana e via minimização da função objetivo com métodos estocásticos. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que o uso da abordagem Bayesiana fornece uma proposta vantajosa para a estimativa de parâmetros em transferência de massa, oferecendo resultados com maior riqueza de informação estatística.The modeling of adsorption processes appears quite frequently in the chemical industry, petrochemical plants and refineries, for example for separation and purification of mixtures in Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) units. In the mathematical formulation, the accurate determination of the model parameters is an important step for the design of chromatographic conditions for continuous separation in SMB processes. This work is aimed at the estimation of the model parameters in adsorption processes, using a chromatographic column for the separation of glucose and fructose. The Bayesian framework for inverse problems is investigated through the implementation of Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods (MCMC) and a critical comparison against the classical Maximum Likelihood approach, with the minimization of the objective function via two different stochastic techniques, namely the Particle Collision Algorithm (PCA), and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is performed. Different cases are presented in order to investigate the statistical significance of the estimates obtained, and perform comparisons between the solution via Bayesian inference and via the minimization of the objective function with the stochastic methods. The results demonstrate that the Bayesian approach employs less computational effort to achieve estimates with comparable statistical information.Peer Reviewe

    RESUMO O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo referente à aplicação da abordagem Bayesiana como técnica de solução do problema de identificação de danos estruturais, onde a integridade da estrutura é continuamente descrita por um parâmetro denominado parâmetro de coesão. A estrutura escolhida para análise é uma viga simplesmente apoiada do tipo Euler-Bernoulli. A identificação de danos é baseada em alterações na resposta impulsiva da estrutura, provocadas pela presença dos mesmos. O problema direto é resolvido através do Método de Elementos Finitos (MEF), que, por sua vez, é parametrizado pelo parâmetro de coesão da estrutura. O problema de identificação de danos é formulado como um problema inverso, cuja solução, do ponto de vista Bayesiano, é uma distribuição de probabilidade a posteriori do parâmetro de coesão, obtida utilizando-se a metodologia de amostragem de Monte Carlo com Cadeias de Markov. As incertezas inerentes aos dados medidos serão contempladas na função de verossimilhança. São apresentadas três estratégias de solução e um conjunto de resultados numéricos, onde considera-se diferentes níveis de ruído para as três estratégias de solução adotadas

    Local Isometric immersions of pseudo-spherical surfaces and evolution equations

    The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces, first introduced by Chern and Tenenblat [3], is characterized by the property that to each solution of a differential equation, within the class, there corresponds a 2-dimensional Riemannian metric of curvature equal to 1-1. The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces carries close ties to the property of complete integrability, as manifested by the existence of infinite hierarchies of conservation laws and associated linear problems. As such, it contains many important known examples of integrable equations, like the sine-Gordon, Liouville and KdV equations. It also gives rise to many new families of integrable equations. The question we address in this paper concerns the local isometric immersion of pseudo-spherical surfaces in E3{\bf E}^{3} from the perspective of the differential equations that give rise to the metrics. Indeed, a classical theorem in the differential geometry of surfaces states that any pseudo-spherical surface can be locally isometrically immersed in E3{\bf E}^{3}. In the case of the sine-Gordon equation, one can derive an expression for the second fundamental form of the immersion that depends only on a jet of finite order of the solution of the pde. A natural question is to know if this remarkable property extends to equations other than the sine-Gordon equation within the class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces. In an earlier paper [11], we have shown that this property fails to hold for all other second order equations, except for those belonging to a very special class of evolution equations. In the present paper, we consider a class of evolution equations for u(x,t)u(x,t) of order k3k\geq 3 describing pseudo-spherical surfaces. We show that whenever an isometric immersion in E3{\bf E}^3 exists, depending on a jet of finite order of uu, then the coefficients of the second fundamental forms are functions of the independent variables xx and tt only.Comment: Fields Institute Communications, 2015, Hamiltonian PDEs and Applications, pp.N

    Optical Hall conductivity of systems with gapped spectral nodes

    We calculate the optical Hall conductivity within the Kubo formalism for systems with gapped spectral nodes, where the latter have a power-law dispersion with exponent n. The optical conductivity is proportional to n and there is a characteristic logarithmic singularity as the frequency approaches the gap energy. The optical Hall conductivity is almost unaffected by thermal fluctuations and disorder for n=1, whereas disorder has a stronger effect on transport properties if n=2

    Assessment of the stability of LTA zeolites under natural gas drying TSA conditions.

    The main features in cationic LTA zeolites that are likely to impact its potential hydrothermal stability are interconnected. The Al content and the compensating cation play an important role in the water adsorption but their influence on the zeolite performance in thermal cycles is yet to be understood. In this study, four LTA zeolite samples were synthetized with distinct Si/Al ratios in sodium and potassium forms. They underwent a Premature Aging Protocol (PAP) that took into account the operating conditions typically found in temperature swing adsorption processes. The Si/Al ratio per se did not impact in the crystallinity upon aging, but the presence of a high amount of potassium cations (Si/Al = 1) led to the amorphization of the zeolite structure. The results from XPS and NMR techniques indicate the Al migration from the outer surface to the inner cages occurs upon aging. Chemical analysis by XRF and ICP-OES associated with 27Al NMR analysis reveal that the presence of EFAl is particularly significant in the sample with the largest Si/Al ratio (5) and is correlated to a much larger C deposition upon aging. TG/DTG and TPD-NH3 experiments suggest that acid sites in the zeolite structures act as a double-edged sword, by enhancing water adsorption while also leading to carbon accumulation. CO2 isotherms at 0 ºC reveal the reduction of the microporosity after aging, whereas the Al content is proportional to the water adsorption uptake, particularly at low pressures (below 10 mbar). The material with an intermediate Si/Al ratio and in Na-form (LTAc-SiAl2-Na) combines excellent hydrothermal stability with a high-water affinity and uptake.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU

    Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)We present a list of vascular plants found in Legado das Águas, Reserva Votorantim, a private reserve having an area of approximately 35,000 ha that spans the municipalities of Tapiraí, Miracatú, and Juquiá, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The reserve is part of a complex of state-protected areas including Alto Ribeira Touristic State Park, Intervales State Park, Carlos Botelho State Park, Jurupará State Park, and Serra do Mar State Park. Together, these form an important and large area of continuous and well-preserved forest. Our study, which involved two main floristic surveys in March/April 2013 and April 2014, recorded 768 species, representing 131 families and 432 genera. The majority of species were angiosperms (619) representing 106 families and 370 genera. There were also two species of gymnosperms belonging to two genera in separate families; 147 species of ferns and lycophytes belonging to 23 families and 60 genera.     Branching Fractions for D0 -> K+K- and D0 -> pi+pi-, and a Search for CP Violation in D0 Decays

    Using the large hadroproduced charm sample collected in experiment E791 at Fermilab, we have measured ratios of branching fractions for the two-body singly-Cabibbo-suppressed charged decays of the D0: (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.109 +- 0.003 +- 0.003, (D0 -> pipi)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.040 +- 0.002 +- 0.003, and (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> pipi) = 2.75 +- 0.15 +- 0.16. We have looked for differences in the decay rates of D0 and D0bar to the CP eigenstates K+K- and pi+pi-, and have measured the CP asymmetry parameters A_CP(K+K-) = -0.010 +- 0.049 +- 0.012 and A_CP(pi+pi-) = -0.049 +- 0.078 +- 0.030, both consistent with zero.Comment: 10 Postscript pages, including 2 figures.
