EMG profile in two different angles during maximum voluntary isometric contraction in squat exercise
The aim of the present study was to analyze the electric activity of the vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) in two differing angles (70° and 90° of knee flexion) during maximum voluntary contraction in squat exercise. Fifteen male subjects composed the sample of the study. As criteria they were untrained for more than 12 months (age of 28.0 ± 4.6 years, height of 180.0 ± 5.2 cm, weight of 80.0 ± 3.2 kg and body index mass of 24.2 ± 1.6 kg/m²). Subjects accomplished three maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) in squat exercise with 70° and 90° of knee flexion and separate at least in 72 h each. Data normalization occurred by average of values in RMS. Procedure adopted followed ISEK's recommendations. No significant differences (p > .05) were found between the angles VL 70° vs VM 70°, VL 90° vs VM 90°, VL 70° vs VL 90°, and VM 70° vs VM 90°. Results allowed for the conclusion that there seems to exist a balance in electric activity between VL and VM during MVIC with 70° and 90° of knee flexion in untrained subjects
Transport Properties of Solitons
We calculate in this article the transport coefficients which characterize
the dynamics of solitons in quantum field theory using the methods of
dissipative quantum systems. We show how the damping and diffusion coefficients
of soliton-like excitations can be calculated using the integral functional
formalism. The model obtained in this article has new features which cannot be
obtained in the standard models of dissipation in quantum mechanics.Comment: 16 Pages, RevTeX, Preprint UIU

Calculation of excited polaron states in the Holstein model
An exact diagonalization technique is used to investigate the low-lying
excited polaron states in the Holstein model for the infinite one-dimensional
lattice. For moderate values of the adiabatic ratio, a new and comprehensive
picture, involving three excited (coherent) polaron bands below the phonon
threshold, is obtained. The coherent contribution of the excited states to both
the single-electron spectral density and the optical conductivity is evaluated
and, due to the invariance of the Hamiltonian under the space inversion, the
two are shown to contain complementary information about the single-electron
system at zero temperature. The chosen method reveals the connection between
the excited bands and the renormalized local phonon excitations of the
adiabatic theory, as well as the regime of parameters for which the electron
self-energy has notable non-local contributions. Finally, it is shown that the
hybridization of two polaron states allows a simple description of the ground
and first excited state in the crossover regime.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PR
Multidisciplinary Experience In The Selection Of Patients For Tubal Sterilization.
Results of the use of a special protocol for evaluation of patients requiring tubal ligation is presented after applied by a multidisciplinary group. The authors conclude that the use of defined parameters of age, parity, marital union duration, number of children alive and the presence of maternal clinical pathology are useful to identify patients with smaller chances of regret after surgery.27% of reproductive-age women in Brazil have chosen surgical sterilization as their contraceptive method. Most of these women who have undergone tubal sterilization opted for cesarean surgery. However, given the young ages of many of these women, many regret having been sterilized. This paper summarizes the experience of a multidisciplinary group in evaluating women who apply for surgical sterilization at the Department of Tocogynecology, Faculdade de Ciencas Medicas, Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Sao Paulo. Detailed descriptions are presented of the medical and social characteristics of cases seen between June 1988 and July 1989. The authors conclude that the use of the defined parameters of age, parity, marital union duration, number of living children, and the presence of maternal clinical pathology are useful in identifying the patients who are least likely to regret undergoing surgical sterilization.113171572
A coleção herpetológica das Faculdades Integradas do Tapajós/Faculdade da Amazônia, Santarém, Pará, Brasil: 1 - Répteis
It shows the collection of the herpetological collection of the Tapajos Integrated Colleges/College Amazon, with complete list of species of reptiles and amphibians deposited in the collection. The herpetological collection currently houses 3.349 specimens, has scientific and didactic collection. The entire collection is properly tumbled and packaged as minimum requirements for collections. He represents an excellent database for the study of amazon herpetofauna. The cities with the most representative specimens of deposits in the collection are Santarem and Belterra, Pará, Brazil; most copies come from scientific expeditions and be can considered a regional dynamic collection because it is to the community. However, greater investments are needed structural, for the maintenance and growth of, the collection so that it continues in of continue with the performance of their duties.Apresenta-se o acervo da coleção herpetológica das Faculdades Integradas do Tapajós/Faculdade da Amazônia, com lista completa das espécies de répteis depositados na coleção. Study of Heparin in Intestinal Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats: Morphologic and Functional Evaluation
AbstractTo study whether treatment with heparin (HEP) attenuates intestinal dysfunction caused by ischemia (I) and reperfusion (R), rats were treated with HEP (100 U/kg intravenously) or saline solution (SS) before I (60 min), which was produced by occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery, and R (120 min). After I or I/R, we mounted 2-cm jejunal segment in an organ bath to study neurogenic contractions stimulated by electrical pulses or KCl, using a digital recording system. Thin jejunal slices were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for optical microscopy. Compared with the sham group, jejunal contractions were similar in the I + HEP and the I/R + HEP groups, but reduced in the I + SS and the I/R + SS groups. The jejunal enteric nerves were damaged in the I + SS and the I/R + SS, but not in the I + HEP and the I/R + HEP cohorts. These results suggested that HEP attenuated intestinal dysfunction caused by I and I/R
Noncommutative quantum mechanics and Bohm's ontological interpretation
We carry out an investigation into the possibility of developing a Bohmian
interpretation based on the continuous motion of point particles for
noncommutative quantum mechanics. The conditions for such an interpretation to
be consistent are determined, and the implications of its adoption for
noncommutativity are discussed. A Bohmian analysis of the noncommutative
harmonic oscillator is carried out in detail. By studying the particle motion
in the oscillator orbits, we show that small-scale physics can have influence
at large scales, something similar to the IR-UV mixing
Behavior problems and prevalence of asthma symptoms among Brazilian children.
OBJECTIVE: Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and has been designated a public health problem due to the increase in its prevalence in recent decades, the amount of health service expenditure it absorbs and an absence of consensus about its etiology. The relationships among psychosocial factors and the occurrence, symptomatology, and severity of asthma have recently been considered. There is still controversy about the association between asthma and a child's mental health, since the pathways through which this relationship is established are complex and not well researched. This study aims to investigate whether behavior problems are associated with the prevalence of asthma symptoms in a large urban center in Latin America. METHODS: It is a cross-section study of 869 children between 6 and 12 years old, residents of Salvador, Brazil. The International Study of Allergy and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC) instrument was used to evaluate prevalence of asthma symptoms. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was employed to evaluate behavioral problems. RESULTS: 19.26% (n=212) of the children presented symptoms of asthma. 35% were classified as having clinical behavioral problems. Poisson's robust regression model demonstrated a statistically significant association between the presence of behavioral problems and asthma symptoms occurrence (PR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.10-1.85). CONCLUSION: These results suggest an association between behavioral problems and pediatric asthma, and support the inclusion of mental health care in the provision of services for asthma morbidity
