Extracting Spooky-activation-at-a-distance from Considerations of Entanglement

    Get PDF
Following an early claim by Nelson & McEvoy \cite{Nelson:McEvoy:2007} suggesting that word associations can display `spooky action at a distance behaviour', a serious investigation of the potentially quantum nature of such associations is currently underway. This paper presents a simple quantum model of a word association system. It is shown that a quantum model of word entanglement can recover aspects of both the Spreading Activation equation and the Spooky-activation-at-a-distance equation, both of which are used to model the activation level of words in human memory.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures; To appear in Proceedings of the Third Quantum Interaction Symposium, Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence, vol 5494, Springer, 200

Localization transitions in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics

We study the localization transitions which arise in both one and two dimensions when quantum mechanical particles described by a random Schr\"odinger equation are subjected to a constant imaginary vector potential. A path-integral formulation relates the transition to flux lines depinned from columnar defects by a transverse magnetic field in superconductors. The theory predicts that the transverse Meissner effect is accompanied by stretched exponential relaxation of the field into the bulk and a diverging penetration depth at the transition.Comment: 4 pages (latex) with 3 figures (epsf) embedded in the text using the style file epsf.st

A unified model for the long and high jump

A simple model based on the maximum energy that an athlete can produce in a small time interval is used to describe the high and long jump. Conservation of angular momentum is used to explain why an athlete should run horizontally to perform a vertical jump. Our results agree with world records.Comment: Accepted for publication in Am. J. Translational Correlations in the Vortex Array at the Surface of a Type-II Superconductor

    Get PDF
We discuss the statistical mechanics of magnetic flux lines in a finite-thickness slab of type-II superconductor. The long wavelength properties of a flux-line liquid in a slab geometry are described by a hydrodynamic free energy that incorporates the boundary conditions on the flux lines at the sample's surface as a surface contribution to the free energy. Bulk and surface weak disorder are modeled via Gaussian impurity potentials. This free energy is used to evaluate the two-dimensional structure factor of the flux-line tips at the sample surface. We find that surface interaction always dominates in determining the decay of translational correlations in the asymptotic long-wavelength limit. On the other hand, such large length scales have not been probed by the decoration experiments. Our results indicate that the translational correlations extracted from the analysis of the Bitter patterns are indeed representative of behavior of flux lines in the bulk.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure (not included), harvmac.tex macro needed (e-mail requests to [email protected] SU-CM-92-01

Patterned Geometries and Hydrodynamics at the Vortex Bose Glass Transition

Patterned irradiation of cuprate superconductors with columnar defects allows a new generation of experiments which can probe the properties of vortex liquids by confining them to controlled geometries. Here we show that an analysis of such experiments that combines an inhomogeneous Bose glass scaling theory with the hydrodynamic description of viscous flow of vortex liquids can be used to infer the critical behavior near the Bose glass transition. The shear viscosity is predicted to diverge as TTBGz|T-T_{BG}|^{-z} at the Bose glass transition, with z6z\simeq 6 the dynamical critical exponent.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Vortex Pinning and Non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics

A delocalization phenomenon is studied in a class of non-Hermitian random quantum-mechanical problems. Delocalization arises in response to a sufficiently large constant imaginary vector potential. The transition is related to depinning of flux lines from extended defects in type-II superconductors subject to a tilted external magnetic field. The physical meaning of the complex eigenvalues and currents of the non-Hermitian system is elucidated in terms of properties of tilted vortex lines. The singular behavior of the penetration length describing stretched exponential screening of a perpendicular magnetic field (transverse Meissner effect), the surface transverse magnetization, and the trapping length are determined near the flux-line depinning point.Comment: 2-column 27-pages RevTex file with 35 eps figure files embedded. Correction, improvement and model verification of CARE 3, version 3

    Get PDF
An independent verification of the CARE 3 mathematical model and computer code was conducted and reported in NASA Contractor Report 166096, Review and Verification of CARE 3 Mathematical Model and Code: Interim Report. The study uncovered some implementation errors that were corrected and are reported in this document. The corrected CARE 3 program is called version 4. Thus the document, correction. improvement, and model verification of CARE 3, version 3 was written in April 1984. It is being published now as it has been determined to contain a more accurate representation of CARE 3 than the preceding document of April 1983. This edition supercedes NASA-CR-166122 entitled, 'Correction and Improvement of CARE 3,' version 3, April 1983

Towards a Tetravalent Chemistry of Colloids

We propose coating spherical particles or droplets with anisotropic nano-sized objects to allow micron-scale colloids to link or functionalize with a four-fold valence, similar to the sp3 hybridized chemical bonds associated with, e.g., carbon, silicon and germanium. Candidates for such coatings include triblock copolymers, gemini lipids, metallic or semiconducting nanorods and conventional liquid crystal compounds. We estimate the size of the relevant nematic Frank constants, discuss how to obtain other valences and analyze the thermal distortions of ground state configurations of defects on the sphere.Comment: Replaced to improve figures. 4 figures Nano Letter

Pinning and Tribology of Tethered Monolayers on Disordered Substrates

We study the statistical mechanics and dynamics of crystalline films with a fixed internal connectivity on a random substrate. Defect free triangular lattices exhibit a sharp transition to a low temperature glassy phase with anomalous phonon fluctuations and a nonlinear force-displacement law with a continuously variable exponent, similar to the vortex glass phase of directed lines in 1+1 dimensions. The periodicity of the tethered monolayer acts like a filter which amplifies particular Fourier components of the disorder. However, the absence of annealed topological defects like dislocations is crucial: the transition is destroyed when the constraint of fixed connectivity is relaxed and dislocations are allowed to proliferate.Comment: revtex, preprint style, 27 pages. Study and development of acoustic treatment for jet engine tailpipes

    Get PDF
A study and development program was accomplished to attenuate turbine noise generated in the JT3D turbofan engine. Analytical studies were used to design an acoustic liner for the tailpipe. Engine ground tests defined the tailpipe environmental factors and laboratory tests were used to support the analytical studies. Furnace-brazed, stainless steel, perforated sheet acoustic liners were designed, fabricated, installed, and ground tested in the tailpipe of a JT3D engine. Test results showed the turbine tones were suppressed below the level of the jet exhaust for most far field polar angles
