Pre-natal death: The need for employing a meaningful ritual towards coping with a   miscarriage or an abortionBoth religion and ritual amongst others are ways by which people can express feelings in their relationships with others, the world and the Almighty God. Religion and ritual are often used to come to a better understanding and to cope with loss. In the postmodern era, a holistic approach towards therapies has been developed. Pastoral therapy is a part of this process. This article examines the use of rituals as a possible therapeutical method for coming to terms with loss after the occurence of pre-natal death. The article argues that a meaningful ritual can be used to assist people who have experienced miscarriage or abortion

New Onset Diabetes after Transplantation (NODAT) is a common complication of renal transplantation worldwide. However, there is very little data available regarding this condition in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study was thereforeconducted in order to determine the incidence of NODAT and its associated risk factors in a South African renaltransplant population. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 221 patients who underwent renal transplants atTygerberg Hospital during the period January 1st 1995 to December 31st 2008.Specific information was retrieved from patient files in order to determine the study outcomes. Fifty of the 221 patientswere found to have NODAT reflecting an incidence of 22.6% (95% CI 0.17-0.28). The cumulative incidences of NODATat three, 12 and 36 months were 9%, 12% and 17% respectively. The mean time to onset of NODAT was 18 monthsafter transplantation (95% CI 11.3-25.3) and the mean age at diagnoses of NODAT was 41 years (95% CI 38.9-44.8).Transplantation at the age of 40 years (odds ratio = 1.05) as well the usage of tacrolimus (odds ratio = 0.43) was foundto increase the risk of developing NODAT. The development of NODAT did not have any effect on graft or patientsurvival in this study. The incidence of NODAT in a South African population appears to be as high as it is worldwide with the first year posttransplantationcarrying the greatest risk for its development. The risk for development of NODAT is increased as thetime post-transplantation increases. Transplantation from the age of 40 years and the use of tacrolimus appear to be themost significant risk factors

‘n Raamwerk vir so ‘n toerusting word as praktykteorie aangebied. English: The methodological model employed attempted to provide a practical theory through the interaction between theory and praxis to produce a more effective service in pastoral guidance to families who have experienced the trauma of a miscarriage situation. Should this practice theory be implemented, its Practical-Theological reference of the Word of God may actively contribute to the image and meaning of the pastoral motive in the pastorate being more clearly displayed. The study was based on the hypothesis that there is a need regarding the involvement of ministers with families who have experienced the trauma of a miscarriage. An empirical study was performed and the results confirm this hypothesis. In the literature study attention was focused on miscarriage from the perspective of the grief theory, and it was concluded that a causal relationship exists between miscarriage and the subsequent grief process. The status of the fetus, as well as the question regarding life after death and the purpose of suffering, were considered from various perspectives to provide background kwowledge for pastoral guidance. On the basis of the results of the literature study and empirical investigation, it was concluded that this is a speciality field, and that the appropriate preparation of ministers may equip them to better serve persons in a situation as this. The framework of such a methodological model requiring special preparation will have to focus on the empowerment of ministers with regard to the world of the victim of miscarriage, thus enabling them to become actively and supportively involved with the situation. A framework for the appropriate preparation of ministers is being offered as practice theory.Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2006.Practical Theologyunrestricte

Systems engineering education in an accredited undergraduate engineering program

    Get PDF
Abstract: Developing countries are mostly reliant on external technologies and this augments the need for systems engineering capability in these economies. It is therefore imperative that systems engineering as theory and practice is included in undergraduate engineering curricula to strengthen the internal technological capability of a country’s developing engineers. In South Africa, the quality of undergraduate engineering programs is governed by the Engineering Council of South Africa (affiliated under the Washington Accord); and the exit level outcomes of the programs are predetermined explicitly per module. Systems engineering was introduced to an undergraduate electrical engineering program offered in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg; and a framework developed to ensure that the program still meets the requisite ECSA exit level outcomes and therefore international standards. This paper presents the design and implementation of the framework, as well as the challenges that students are exposed to when faced with real-world systems engineering practice. Students were grouped into independent product development teams using a software support tool which promotes diversity and skill-level targets for each team. The independent team structure required the use and application of the systems engineering process and supported the development of management and communication skills. Furthermore, the framework allowed assessment of the performance of each product development team towards achieving the overall project objectives. One of the accreditation requirements of undergraduate engineering programs is peer assessment and this was achieved by the process. The paper closes by presenting the results of the stated framework implementation in an undergraduate electrical engineering program offered in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg

Research contract relationship between a large industry partner and South African universities.

    Get PDF
We propose and evaluate a contractual structuring instrument (in the form of a Framework Research Agreement) in support of research collaboration partnerships between universities and large industry, specifically for the case of large industry in the South African context. This study includes one large South African originated industry (as the pioneer of concluding Framework Research Agreements with several universities) and multiple South African universities, and stretches over several decades. This study was done within the broader context of the challenges and benefits experienced by both industry and university in the academic engagement sphere of industry–university collaboration. By providing insight from both industry and university perspectives, factors impacting on academic engagement (with specific emphasis on the legislative framework, contractual aspects, institutional research contract practices and institutional risks), are considered and discussed. Recommendations are made for improved industry–university collaboration by sharing experiences from the industry and universities on challenges faced, managing the expectations and proposing mechanisms to support constructive research collaboration through a mutually beneficial contractual framework instrument.Significance:• A novel Framework Research Agreement as a contractual instrument was developed and pioneered by the industry partner with several South African universities, to create a transparent framework based on fair contracting and determinable remuneration principles.• This study specifically highlights the need for a contractual instrument, in which the intention is to build a long-term contractual relationship to support industry–university collaboration and academic engagement within the existing South African legislative framework.• It further draws attention to research contract management practices and contractual aspects, which until now have been largely ignored in industry–university collaboration and academic engagement frameworks of this kind
