Preparing the foundations for video-based, practice-placement support: establishing the role from a studentsâ perspective
Currently, many placement-based health programme students within the UK are supported through face-to-face visits from university staff. Whilst cited in literature as being of value, the face-to-face nature of this contact is not supported. Alternatives including video-based communications methods offer the potential for cost effective, environmentally responsible support. However, in order to establish the fitness for purpose of alternative approaches, the content and purpose of current support needs to be understood. This project aimed to investigate student perceptions of the ideal content and purpose of clinical support visits, and alternatives to the current face-to-face approach. Fifty-six Physiotherapy undergraduate students responded to questionnaires with a further nine participating in a follow-up focus group. Participants emphasised the value of the visit in guiding learning, ensuring progression and resolving arising issues, and highlighted concerns over alternative approaches. Focus group participants discussed the importance of personal and professional confidence in directing requirements for support, and went on to propose a menu of options for methods of communication.Whilst limited in some applications, video technologies may be one of the options. Overall, however, this project supports the need for consideration of individualised learning journeys within curriculum planning
Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, Societies (5S): A Formal Model for Digital Libraries
Digital libraries (DLs) are complex information systems and therefore demand formal foundations lest development efforts diverge and interoperability suffers. In this paper, we propose the fundamental abstractions of Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, and Societies (5S), which allow us to define digital libraries rigorously and usefully. Streams are sequences of arbitrary items used to describe both static and dynamic (e.g., video) content. Structures can be viewed as labeled directed graphs, which impose organization. Spaces are sets with operations on those sets that obey certain constraints. Scenarios consist of sequences of events or actions that modify states of a computation in order to accomplish a functional requirement. Societies are sets of entities and activities and the relationships between and among them. Together these abstractions provide a formal foundation to define, relate, and unify concepts - among others, of digital objects, metadata, collections, and services - required to formalize and elucidate "digital libraries". The applicability, versatility and unifying power of the 5S model are demonstrated through its use in three distinct applications: building and interpretation of a DL taxonomy, informal and formal analysis of case studies of digital libraries (NDLTD and OAI), and utilization as a formal basis for a DL description language
5-micron photometry of late-type dwarfs
We present narrowband-M photometry of nine low-mass dwarfs with spectral
types ranging from M2.5 to L0.5. Combining the (L'-M') colours derived from our
observations with data from the literature, we find colours consistent with a
Rayleigh-Jeans flux distribution for spectral types earlier than M5, but
enhanced F_3.8/F_4.7 flux ratios (negative (L'-M') colours) at later spectral
types. This probably reflects increased absorption at M' due to the CO
fundamental band. We compare our results against recent model predictions and

Decorin protein core affects the global gene expression profile of the tumor microenvironment in a triple-negative orthotopic breast carcinoma xenograft model
Decorin, a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan gene family, exists and functions wholly within the tumor microenvironment to suppress tumorigenesis by directly targeting and antagonizing multiple receptor tyrosine kinases, such as the EGFR and Met. This leads to potent and sustained signal attenuation, growth arrest, and angiostasis. We thus sought to evaluate the tumoricidal benefits of systemic decorin on a triple-negative orthotopic breast carcinoma xenograft model. To this end, we employed a novel high-density mixed expression array capable of differentiating and simultaneously measuring gene signatures of both Mus musculus (stromal) and Homo sapiens (epithelial) tissue origins. We found that decorin protein core modulated the differential expression of 374 genes within the stromal compartment of the tumor xenograft. Further, our top gene ontology classes strongly suggests an unexpected and preferential role for decorin protein core to inhibit genes necessary for immunomodulatory responses while simultaneously inducing expression of those possessing cellular adhesion and tumor suppressive gene properties. Rigorous verification of the top scoring candidates led to the discovery of three genes heretofore unlinked to malignant breast cancer that were reproducibly found to be induced in several models of tumor stroma. Collectively, our data provide highly novel and unexpected stromal gene signatures as a direct function of systemic administration of decorin protein core and reveals a fundamental basis of action for decorin to modulate the tumor stroma as a biological mechanism for the ascribed anti-tumorigenic properties
The Nova Rate in M94 (NGC 4736)
A multi-epoch H survey of the early-type spiral galaxy M94 (NGC 4736)
has been completed as part of a program to establish the galaxy's nova rate. A
total of four nova candidates were discovered in seven epochs of observation
during the period from 2005 to 2007. After making corrections for temporal
coverage and spatial completeness, a global nova rate of 5.0
yr was determined. This rate corresponds to a specific-luminosity nova
rate of 1.4 0.5 novae per year per 10 when the
luminosity is determined from the color, or 1.5 0.4 novae per year
per 10 when the luminosity is derived from the Two
Micron All Sky Survey. These values are slightly lower than that of other
galaxies with measured nova rates, which typically lie in the range of

A search for L dwarf binary systems
We present analysis of HST Planetary Camera images of twenty L dwarfs
identified in the course of the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. Four of the targets
have faint, red companions at separations between 0.07 and 0.29 arcseconds (1.6
to 7.6 AU). In three cases, the bolometric magnitudes of the components differ
by less than 0.3 magnitudes. Since the cooling rate for brown dwarfs is a
strong function of mass, similarity in luminosities implies comparable masses.
The faint component in the 2M0850 system, however, is over 1.3 magnitudes
fainter than the primary in the I-band, and ~0.8 magnitudes fainter in M(bol).
Indeed, 2M0850B is ~0.8 magnitudes fainter in I than the lowest luminosity L
dwarf currently known, while the absolute magnitude we deduce at J is almost
identical with M_J for Gl 229B. Theoretical models indicate a mass ratio of
\~0.75. The mean separation of the L dwarf binaries in the current sample is
smaller by a factor of two than amongst M dwarfs. We discuss the implications
of these results for the temperature scale in the L/T transition region and for

Multiplexed dispersive readout of superconducting phase qubits
We introduce a frequency-multiplexed readout scheme for superconducting phase
qubits. Using a quantum circuit with four phase qubits, we couple each qubit to
a separate lumped-element superconducting readout resonator, with the readout
resonators connected in parallel to a single measurement line. The readout
resonators and control electronics are designed so that all four qubits can be
read out simultaneously using frequency multiplexing on the one measurement
line. This technology provides a highly efficient and compact means for reading
out multiple qubits, a significant advantage for scaling up to larger numbers
