Cosmopolitan Solidarities of Difference in a broken World

    Get PDF
In my paper, I develop from Hannah Arendt’s views an understanding of cosmopolitan solidarity characterized by plurality and difference and how it can offer possibilities of acting politically through multiple, interlocking layers of critical solidarity across differences. When polities divide their citizens through geographical borders and identity frames, the role of the political is to transcend these frontiers to open up new avenues for acting politically. Solidarity has a distinctive political character, which sets it apart from legal and moral norms. It allows people to disengage from any form of naturalistic ties based on a shared gender, society, nation, or race and thereby, rebuild the public sphere that the totalitarian mechanism threatens to dismantle. It is an exercise in ‘enlarged mentality’ or the capacity for thinking one’s way into the viewpoint, the position and the experience of other people. It is a shared responsibility to act on behalf of others in a coexistence and not merely an empty claim of support. In my paper, I develop from Hannah Arendt’s views an understanding of cosmopolitan solidarity characterized by plurality and difference and how it can offer possibilities of acting politically through multiple, interlocking layers of critical solidarity across differences. Ayurveda View on Infertility and its management w.s.r. to role of Uttar Basti

    Get PDF
Ayurveda considers Vandhyatva (infertility) as failure to give birth to a baby or experiencing Garbha Strava (repeated abortion) or Mrutvatsa (still births). The factors such as lifestyle, stress, excessive usage of contraceptives, genetic problems, smoking & drinking habits increases such cases day by day. As per ayurveda Vandhyatva occur due to the vitiation of Vata Dosha which affects basic constituents of Garbha (Rutu, Kshetra, Ambu & Beej). Ayurvedic classics describe both mental and body purification along with lifestyle management for treating infertility. Ayurveda philosopher had mentioned Shamana and Shodhanchikitsa for the treatment of infertility. Panchkarma provides best efficacy because it helps in balancing Doshas and Dushyas. Uttarbasti is one such type of therapy being indicated for infertility. It helps in detoxification of reproductive tract like uterus & fallopian tube. Uttarbasti helps in balancing Vata Dosha and thus helps in retaining Garbha

Essays Related to Water Transfer and Water Sharing: The Past and the Present

    Get PDF
This dissertation explores the impacts of resource procurement on economic growth and urbanization in a county through a historical case study, moving on to discuss the welfare impacts of resource-sharing in two regions. The first two essays explore the impact of the Owens Valley water transfer in the 1900s on the urban sprawl and the economic growth of Los Angeles. The main contribution that the first two essays make is to present an empirical analysis on the impact of procurement of resources on the economy. The third essay examines the welfare impacts of a proposed water sharing and development project. The findings suggest that the regions would be willing to pay for the water transfer only if the increase in new resources is large or the costs are shared equally among the involved regions, excluding environmental costs. This essay informs the policy of alternative methods ensuring overall net benefit to all the parties involved in the project. Studies like the one presented in this dissertation have become indispensable with the increase in competing uses of water

Background: Mycobacterium, the causative organism of tuberculosis, is notorious for its ability to develop resistance with monotherapy. To prevent emergence of resistance, combination of antitubercular drugs is given for months to years that can lead to side effects. Hepatotoxicity is one of the commonest side-effect with antitubercular drugs. This study was aimed to explore the hepatoprotective potential of α-tocopherol against experimentally induced hepatotoxicity in albino rabbits. Methods: This experimental study was carried out on 30 rabbits of either sex.  They were divided into three groups comprising 10 animals each. Hepatotoxicity is induced experimentally in rabbits following a standard protocol. Group I received normal saline (10 ml/kg bw). Rabbits in group II were treated with first line antitubercular drugs isoniazid (5 mg/kg bw), rifampicin (20 mg/kg bw) and pyrazinamide (25 mg/kg bw) concurrently. Group III received α-tocopherol 200 mg/kg bw along with group II drugs. All drugs were administered by oral route for 90 days. On last day of experiment blood samples were taken to investigate the plasma levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and serum total bilirubin. Results: Serum levels of ALT were found to be markedly elevated upon oral administration of antitubercular drugs for 90 days. A statistically significant reduction in ALT levels was noticed when α-Tocopherol was given in doses of 200mg/kg bw along with antitubercular drugs for same duration. Similar results were obtained with serum ALP & serum total bilirubin. Conclusions: α-tocopherol (200 mg/kg bw, oral) was found to have hepatoprotective effect against antitubercular drugs induced hepatotoxicity in albino rabbits.

Ayurveda has mentioned the pandemic situation under term Janapadodhwamsa which spread through Vayu, Jala, Desha and Kala. Microbes undergo evolution with time and novel virus is a evolved virus of SARS group. Outbreak of Covid-19 is severely affecting the world. It is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2. It has mainly respiratory and systemic manifestations. People having diabetes, chronic diseases, pregnant women are more prone to this infection; as they are more susceptible towards pathogens and development of severe conditions like pneumonia. Due to the physiological changes during pregnancy, pregnant women are most vulnerable group in this pandemic situation because infection during pregnancy can result in adverse outcomes. Many researches are still in continuation because we are not sure of many evidences till now. Ayurveda in this regards suggested many preventive protocols which can prevent prevalence of disease up to some extent

Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age that affecting large number of global population now a days. The condition described as presence of cysts on the ovaries leading to obstructed functioning of ovary. Amenorrhea, infrequent menstruation & ovulation, imbalanced hormonal levels, chronic pelvic pain and irregular bleeding are the common symptoms of Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. Ayurveda also considered symptoms of PCOS as a disorder of Dosha vitiation and it is believed that disturbed functioning of Artava Dhatu is mainly associated with disease. Srota that is mainly affected in disease is Artavavaha Srota. Both ayurveda and modern science suggested various treatment modalities for the management of PCOS including conduction of disciplinary daily regimen. Considering the current scenario of disease, present article emphasized modern and Ayurveda perspectives of PCOS in a view to explore this area for upcoming researchers

    Get PDF
Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria are the soil bacteria inhabiting around/on the root surface and are directly or indirectly involved in promoting plant growth and development via production and secretion of various regulatory chemicals in the vicinity of rhizosphere. There has been much research interest in PGPB and there is now an increasing number of PGPB being commercialized for various crops. Today a lot of efforts have been made for searching and investigating the PGPB and their mode of action, so that they can be exploited commercially as biofertilizers. Because of the various challenges faced in screening, formulation, and application, PGPB have yet to fulfill their promise and potential as commercial inoculants. Recent progress in our understanding of their diversity, colonization ability, mechanisms of action, formulation, and application should facilitate their development as reliablecomponents in the management of sustainable agricultural systems. Several reviews have discussed specific aspects of PGPB as bioinoculants. We have tried to critically evaluate the current status of bacterial inoculants for contemporary agriculture in developed and developing countries. This review focuses on some important information regarding the biofertilizing potential of some important group of microbes, their formulations, their application for the development of sustainable technology, scope of improvement by genetic engineering, steps to be undertaken for their commercialization and their future prospects
