    Milan’s Cycle as an Accurate Leading Indicator for the Italian Business Cycle

    A coincident business cycle indicator for the Milan area is built on the basis of a monthly industrial survey carried out by Assolombarda, the largest territorial entrepreneurial association in Italy. The indicator is extracted from three time series concerning the production level and the internal and foreign order book as declared by some 250 Assolombarda associates. This indicator is potentially very valuable in itself, being Milan one of the most dynamic economic systems in Italy and Europe, but it becomes much more interesting when compared to the Italian business cycle as extracted form the Italian industrial production index. Indeed, notwithstanding the deep differences in the nature of the data, the indicator for Milan has an extremely high coherence with the Italian cycle and the former leads the latter by approximately 4-5 months.     Genome-Wide Association Study Reveals Candidate Genes for Flowering Time Variation in Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

    The common bean is one of the most important staples in many areas of the world. Extensive phenotypic and genetic characterization of unexplored bean germplasm are still needed to unlock the breeding potential of this crop. Dissecting genetic control of flowering time is of pivotal importance to foster common bean breeding and to develop new varieties able to adapt to changing climatic conditions. Indeed, flowering time strongly affects yield and plant adaptation ability. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic control of days to flowering using a whole genome association approach on a panel of 192 highly homozygous common bean genotypes purposely developed from landraces using Single Seed Descent. The phenotypic characterization was carried out at two experimental sites throughout two growing seasons, using a randomized partially replicated experimental design. The same plant material was genotyped using double digest Restriction-site Associated DNA sequencing producing, after a strict quality control, a dataset of about 50 k Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). The Genome-Wide Association Study revealed significant and meaningful associations between days to flowering and several SNP markers; seven genes are proposed as the best candidates to explain the detected associations

    Freedom, Goodness, Power, and Belonging: The Semantics of Phobic, Obsessive-Compulsive, Eating, and Mood Disorders

    Are the semantics of “freedom,” “goodness,” “power,” and “belonging” characteristic of the stories narrated in psychotherapy by individuals respectively with phobic, obsessive-compulsive, eating, and mood disorders? To verify this hypothesis, put forward by Ugazio's model of semantic polarities, the Family Semantics Grid (FSG) was applied to the transcripts of 120 individual video-recorded systemic therapy sessions, the first two sessions carried out with 60 patients with phobic (12), obsessive-compulsive (12), eating (12), and mood (12) disorders and asymptomatic patients (12) with existential problems who made up the comparison group. The results confirm the hypothesis. All but one patient were correctly assigned to their diagnostic group only by drawing on their narrated semantics. The semantics alone therefore seem capable of defining the correct diagnostic group to which each patient belongs. We suggest considering the semantics as contextual and cultural diagnostic dimensions, expressions of the bonds but also of the resources of people, and above all useful for a diagnosis aimed at fostering processes of transformation and change

    L’article a pour but d’illustrer les principes qui ont guidĂ© la conception et la rĂ©daction d’un manuel appelĂ© «sussidiario», dĂ©veloppĂ© par deux enseignantes de la VallĂ©e d’Aoste dans le but de faciliter aux Ă©lĂšves immigrĂ©s l’accĂšs aux contenus disciplinaires. Ayant frĂ©quentĂ© les cours d’alphabĂ©tisation en langue italienne, ces Ă©lĂšves n’ont pas encore les compĂ©tences linguistiques nĂ©cessaires pour profiter des manuels scolaires utilisĂ©s en classe. Le «sussidiario» est donc un manuel multidisciplinaire, qui prĂ©sente une sĂ©lection des contenus fondamentaux de la premiĂšre annĂ©e du collĂšge. Ces contenus sont exposĂ©s par le biais de formes d’écriture contrĂŽlĂ©e pour favoriser la rĂ©ception active et autonome des textes. En ce sens, le manuel est non seulement un outil pour aider l’acquisition des Ă©lĂšves non italophones, mais aussi une aide pour tous les Ă©lĂšves qui ont des difficultĂ©s Ă  accĂ©der Ă  la discipline Ă©tudiĂ©e. Il peut Ă©galement soutenir le travail des enseignants dans les classes multilingues et multiniveaux.The aim of this article is to illustrate the guidelines that governed the conception and realization of a textbook called «sussidiario», developed by two teachers in the Aosta Valley wishing to facilitate migrant pupils’ access to the various subject matters. These pupils had learned a little Italian but do not as yet have the linguistic competences allowing them to benefit from the textbooks used in class. The «sussidiario» is a multidisciplinary manual that presents a selection of the basic knowledge acquired in the first year of secondary school. Contents are exposed thanks to forms of controlled writing that allow the texts to be used actively and independently. In this sense, the textbook is not only a help during the first stages of a foreign pupil’s schooling, it can also help all pupils who have difficulty accessing a given subject. It is also a help for the teacher confronted by multilingual and multilevel classrooms

    Multi-Environment Evaluation and Genetic Characterisation of Common Bean Breeding Lines for Organic Farming Systems

    It is recognised that one of the main causes for the relative low yields under organic conditions is the use of modern cultivars which are bred for high-input management systems. The work described here aimed to study and test possible breeding strategies to produce cultivars of common bean for organic agriculture. To this purpose, crosses between a traditional Italian landrace named “Gnocchetto” and a cultivar were carried out. The F1 plants obtained were either backcrossed or self-fertilised and the obtained materials subjected to selection for quality traits at different development stages. The resulting lines were tested under four different environmental conditions for three years in order to determine their potential performance. The resulting data were analysed using a Multi-Environment Trial Analysis (MET) approach and different visualisations of the GGE biplot were generated. Furthermore, to assess the level of genetic similarity, the lines were characterised using 25 Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) molecular markers. Results showed that the breeding approach applied allowed to select lines with the same technological and agronomic characteristics as commercially available cultivars, but with different adaptation abilities that make them suitable for organic agriculture

    transcriptional response of human umbilical vein endothelial cells to low doses of ionizing radiation

    We used cDNA microarray hybridization technology to monitor the transcriptional response of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial (HUVEC) cells to x-rays doses ranging from 2 to 200 cGy. An early time window from irradiation (4h) was selected in order to minimize the effects of the cell cycle blockage eventually induced at high doses of irradiation. Three different gene-clustering algorithms have been used to group the 4134 monitored ORF based on their transcriptional response in function of the irradiation dose. The results show that while few genes exhibit a typical dose-dependent modulation with a variable threshold, most of them have a different modulation pattern, peaking at the two intermediate doses. Strikingly even the lowest dose used (2 cGy) seems to be very effective in transcriptional modulation. These results confirm the physiological relevance of sublethal-dose exposures of endothelial cells and strengthens the hypothesis that alternative dose-specific pathways of radioadaptive response exist in the mammalian cells. 111 genes were found to be modulated at all doses of irradiation. These genes were functionally classified by cellular process or by molecular function. Genes involved in coagulation and peroxidase activity and structural constituent of ribosomes were over-represented among the up-regulated genes as compared with their expected statistical occurrence. Three genes coding for regulatory kinase activities (CDK6; PRCKB1 and TIE) are found down-regulated at all doses of irradiation

    Field trials were conducted for three years on an organic farm in England to assess the performance and yield variability of two synthetic sprouting broccoli populations with 4 or 8 parents respectively, along with the original landrace mother plants and a commercial F1 hybrid variety as control (Santée). In terms of total yield, Santée outperformed the other entries, but for some other traits, e.g. heading time and number of sprouts, Santée was comparable with the mean of one or more of the genetically diverse entries. Analysis of yield variability over time showed mixed results. With regard to total yield and total sprout number, variability was higher in the F1 hybrid than in the genetically diverse populations, but for other parameters such as average sprout weight and time to maturity, patterns were less clear. Using broccoli populations in commercial production will depend on acceptability of within-population variability of phenotypic traits, especially maturation time

Such phenomenon is often supported by captivating marketing strategies and social media advertising providing unscientifically founded claims, thus raising safety concerns. The aim of our study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the online market, patterns of use, perceived risks and other safety issues on supplement use as reported in online fitness communities. Methods: A mixed method approach was employed. An automatized web-based monitoring tool (Brand24Âź) was used to track the most popular supplements and related discussions according to the number of interactions between users and shares; the number and category of websites; the social media reach; and the most popular hashtags. Results were assessed through a netnographic qualitative analysis of online fitness fora, to identify motivations of intake, self-reported side effects andthe overall safety perception reliability of supplements information online. Results: A social media reach of over four million individuals, inclusive of 18595 posts, emerged from our search. The most cited supplements were “Whey Protein”, “Branched Chain Amino-Acid”, “Creatine”, “Multivitamin supplements” and “Nitric Oxide boosters”. Supplements were mainly taken for muscle gain (23%), increase energy (17%), and weight loss (8%). Although the web narrative on supplementation was overall positive, a wide range of side effects were reported by 19% of fitness fora users. These included acne (9%), water retention (9%), stomach pain (9%), rashes (7%), erectile dysfunctions (7%) and weight gain (5%). Concerns about contamination (47%), counterfeit content (17%) and the presence of hidden ingredients (11%) were also recorded. Conclusions: In a poorly regulated context, where unsolicited social media posts have replaced the typical advice provided by professionals, efforts should be made to ensure the reliability of the provided information to avoid the insurgence of unwanted adverse effects and safeguard public health.Peer reviewe
