Effects of the Wisconsin Reading Design Comprehension Program on Reading Achievement and Self-Concept of Sixth Grade Students

Problem. The teaching of reading in elementary schools of America has long been a subject of intense interest to the American public. The comprehension component of the criterion referenced reading program, Wisconsin Design for Reading Skills Development, is a product being developed to teach reading skills. The main purpose of the study was to determine and describe the effects of the program on reading achievement and self-concept of sixth grade students. Method. This was a quasi-experimental study using a parametric technique. One-way multi-variate analysis of covariance and two-way univariate analysis of covariance were used to analyze the results of the Stanford Achievement test scores. Univariate analysis of covariance was used to analyze the results of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and Michigan Educational Assessment Program. Significance of difference between independent proportions was used to analyze the WDRSD scores for the treatment group. There were forty-four sixth grade students in the treatment group (nineteen boys and twenty-five girls) and one hundred three in the control group (forty-seven boys and fifty-six girls) who were tested for treatment and sex. Results. Treatment girls scored significantly higher than non-treatment girls in reading--especially spelling. Treatment boys scored significantly higher in spelling. Both treatment boys and treatment girls met the criterion for WDRSD results. There were no significant differences between any groups on self-esteem. Conclusions. Although the comprehension component of Wisconsin Design still needs some refinement, it is a useful program worthy of further development and application

An academic history of the design and construction of the first Maine State Prison built at Thomaston, Maine. The prison, designed by and constructed under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Rose, was unique in America. The 50 solitary confinement cells were actually underground pits. Rose, as the first prison warden, employed the Auburn prison system of strictly enforced silence, hard labor, and corporal punishment intended to inspire grief and penitence. Negley K. Parkview Junior High School is located in Lawrenceville, Illinois, and is a part of Community Unit District No. 20. At present, Parkview serves 386 students and 25 faculty members. The purpose of this study is to develop a faculty handbook which will be used to inform the new teachers, as well as the tenured teachers, what is expected of them. The handbook will become a very important part of, the orientation process of new staff members. There is a definite need for clarification of policies and procedures and the organization of these materials in such a form that they will be readily accessible when needed. Previously at Parkview, rules, regulations, assignments, and other pertinent information were haphazardly given to the faculty through the year. By having all information condensed in a handbook, the faculty can better utilize the information and acquire a better understanding of the total operation of the school. How elaborate such a handbook should be will depend upon the size of the school. The study is limited to include only those items which will be of importance to the faculty members of Parkview Junior High School. The areas of concern to which this study is directed are: Educational Philosophy and Goals Student Goals Responsibilities of the Teacher General Information Administrative Bulletins The fourth section, General Information, is written in detail to provide the faculty with a useful set of guidelines. A faculty handbook will help both the beginning and the experienced administrator. For the new principal it will serve as a device to help him/her think through the routine and organization of the school. For the experienced principal it will tend to prevent redundancy of details. It is recommended that revisions be made under the direction and supervision of the administration whenever it is deemed necessary. Updating a handbook will insure the effectiveness of it as an invaluable tool for the school district

Workplace injuries and illnesses have continued to decrease significantly through increased regulations, awareness, and technological advances. These enhancements are not enough to continue to drive these rates lower. A robust safety culture within an organization is required to truly affect change that will continue to diminish the occurrence of injuries and illnesses within the workplace. This project seeks to define the key aspects and elements that are fundamental to a culture of safety as a top priority amongst competing demands. The foundations of a robust safety culture were identified through a systematic literature review, a site comparison example of safety performance outcomes, the development of a survey tool, and training development. Management commitment or a similar term is the element that appears to be most important to developing and maintaining a robust safety culture. Safety culture is one of the best predictors of a company\u27s safety performance outcomes

The rapid rate of increasing numbers of Hispanics in the United States, along with the reading achievement gap between Whites and Hispanics, highlights the need to examine the factors that affect young Hispanics\u27 literacy success. This literature review examined the specific factors that might predict Spanish-speaking Hispanic preschoolers\u27 later reading accomplishments. Studies were categorized by child, family, and school factors that are related to prediction of future literacy attainment. Analysis of the assorted papers and articles demonstrated that a combination of the following factors would most affect Hispanic preschoolers\u27 future reading abilities in English: high quality early childhood education programs that assist the child in the native language and in English as he or she is learning important preliteracy skills in both languages
