    Detecting cold gas at intermediate redshifts: GMRT survey using Mg II systems

    Intervening HI 21-cm absorption systems at z > 1.0 are very rare and only 4 confirmed detections have been reported in the literature. Despite their scarcity, they provide interesting and unique insights into the physical conditions in the interstellar medium of high-z galaxies. Moreover, they can provide independent constraints on the variation of fundamental constants. We report 3 new detections based on our ongoing Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) survey for 21-cm absorbers at 1.10< z_abs< 1.45 from candidate damped Lyman_alpha systems. The 21-cm lines are narrow for the z_abs = 1.3710 system towards SDSS J0108-0037 and z_abs = 1.1726 system toward SDSS J2358-1020. Based on line full-width at half maximum, the kinetic temperatures are <= 5200 K and <=800 K, respectively. The 21-cm absorption profile of the third system, z_abs =1.1908 system towards SDSS J0804+3012, is shallow, broad and complex, extending up to 100 km/s. The centroids of the 21-cm lines are found to be shifted with respect to the corresponding centroids of the metal lines derived from SDSS spectra. This may mean that the 21-cm absorption is not associated with the strongest metal line component.Comment: 13 pages with 5 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

    Comparative evaluation of egg based solid media for primary isolation of Paratuberculosis bacilli

    81-87Paratuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is a prevalent infection and is highly expensive to livestock industry. Paratuberculosis also has zoonotic concerns with Crohn&rsquo;s disease. Isolation of MAP from infected individuals/samples is the most vital for downstream studies. However, MAP is extremely fastidious organism and primary isolation is extremely difficult. Mycobacterial growth indicator tube (MGIT) medium is most recommended for primary isolation, but this medium is highly expensive and requires sophisticated instrument and is unaffordable for developing and underdeveloped world. Present study aimed to investigate the comparative performance of three different egg based solid media (MB7H10, LJ and HEYM) for the primary isolation of MAP from clinically suspected animals. Animals having signs of paratuberculosis were sampled either from farms in Jaipur District of Western India or slaughterhouse. Slaughtered animals were sampled having swollen &amp; enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) with thickened/ corrugated intestine near ileo-cecal junction (ICJ). Fecal samples were collected from suspected cattle, buffalo, goat and sheep. MB7H10 medium showed maximum recovery of MAP isolates from clinical samples. Most of the isolates grew on MB7H10 (41.9 %) followed by LJ (22.3%) and HEYM (6.25 %). In case single medium is to be used MB7H10 is the first choice and combination of MB7H10+LJ is better. In conclusion, combination of MB7H10+LJ is the best choice for solid media for the isolation of the MAP in laboratories

    Injuries around the hip joint are one of the most common orthopedic injuries and these types of injuries are grossly debilitating until treated properly. Simultaneous occurrence of fracture of proximal femur with fracture of ipsilateral acetabulum or pelvis is termed as floating hip injury. These injuries are very rare, only to be found 1 in 10,000 as well as there is lack of literature support regarding proper treatment protocol. Here we are going to present a case of fracture of neck of left femur along with fracture of left acetabulum in a 45 years old male undergone road traffic accident.

    Temperature dependence of conduction mechanism of ZnO and co-doped ZnO thin films

    ZnO and Co-doped ZnO thin films have been deposited on the sapphire substrate by ultrasonic assisted chemical vapor deposition technique. The films were annealed in vacuum at 450 degrees C. All the films were highly c-axis orientated and contained no impurity phase. The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity has been measured in order to identify the dominant conduction mechanism. In the higher temperature region the dominance of thermally activated band conduction was observed whereas in the low temperature region the hopping conduction was found to dominate. The hopping conduction mechanism in the lower temperature range in the film was Mott's Variable Range Hopping and not the Nearest Neighbor Hopping. The temperature region, where hopping conduction was dominant found to increase by Co doping in ZnO film. The localization length was found to be larger in the Co-doped ZnO film
