The ten myths of manufacturing:what does the future hold for UK manufacturing?
The recent recession has caused upheaval for the economies worldwide. The impact has been felt enormously all over and especially in the manufacturing sector. This report discusses significant data on China's manufacturing industry that suggests they are already growing again despite recent events, while India has continued to maintain their efforts. One question the report raises is as the balance of economic power shifts to the East, what if the future for the once great UK manufacturing industry

Super-orbital re-entry in Australia - laboratory measurement, simulation and flight observation
There are large uncertainties in the aerothermodynamic modelling of super-orbital re-entry which impact the design of spacecraft thermal protection systems (TPS). Aspects of the thermal environment of super-orbital re-entry flows can be simulated in the laboratory using arc- and plasma jet facilities and these devices are regularly used for TPS certification work [5]. Another laboratory device which is capable of simulating certain critical features of both the aero and thermal environment of super-orbital re-entry is the expansion tube, and three such facilities have been operating at the University of Queensland in recent years[10]. Despite some success, wind tunnel tests do not achieve full simulation, however, a virtually complete physical simulation of particular re-entry conditions can be obtained from dedicated flight testing, and the Apollo era FIRE II flight experiment [2] is the premier example which still forms an important benchmark for modern simulations. Dedicated super-orbital flight testing is generally considered too expensive today, and there is a reluctance to incorporate substantial instrumentation for aerothermal diagnostics into existing missions since it may compromise primary mission objectives. An alternative approach to on-board flight measurements, with demonstrated success particularly in the âStardustâ sample return mission, is remote observation of spectral emissions from the capsule and shock layer [8]. JAXAâs âHayabusaâ sample return capsule provides a recent super-orbital reentry example through which we illustrate contributions in three areas: (1) physical simulation of super-orbital re-entry conditions in the laboratory; (2) computational simulation of such flows; and (3) remote acquisition of optical emissions from a super-orbital re entry event
Design and Characterization of a Hypervelocity Expansion Tube Facility
We report on the design and characterization of a 152 mm diameter expansion tube capable of accessing a range of high enthalpy test conditions
with Mach numbers up to 7.1 for aerodynamic studies. Expansion tubes
have the potential to offer a wide range of test flow conditions as gas acceleration is achieved through interaction with an unsteady expansion wave
rather than expansion through a fixed area ratio nozzle. However, the range
of test flow conditions is in practice limited by a number of considerations
such as short test time and large amplitude flow disturbances. We present
a generalized design strategy for small-scale expansion tubes. As a starting
point, ideal gas dynamic calculations for optimal facility design to maximize
test time at a given Mach number test condition are presented, together
with a correction for the expansion head reflection through a non-simple
region. A compilation of practical limitations that have been identified for
expansion tube facilities such as diaphragm rupture and flow disturbance
minimization is then used to map out a functional design parameter space.
Experimentally, a range of test conditions have been verified through pitot
pressure measurements and analysis of schlieren images of flow over simple
geometries. To date there has been good agreement between theoretical
and experimental results
The effects of exercise on cardiovascular biomarkers in patients with chronic heart failure
Exercise training is recommended for chronic heart failure (HF) patients to improve functional status and reduce risk of adverse outcomes. Elevated plasma levels of amino-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) are associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes in this patient population. Whether exercise training leads to improvements in biomarkers and how such improvements relate to clinical outcomes are unclear

Pain-causing stinging nettle toxins target TMEM233 to modulate NaV1.7 function
Voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels are critical regulators of neuronal excitability and are targeted by many toxins that directly interact with the pore-forming α subunit, typically via extracellular loops of the voltage-sensing domains, or residues forming part of the pore domain. Excelsatoxin A (ExTxA), a pain-causing knottin peptide from the Australian stinging tree Dendrocnide excelsa, is the first reported plant-derived NaV channel modulating peptide toxin. Here we show that TMEM233, a member of the dispanin family of transmembrane proteins expressed in sensory neurons, is essential for pharmacological activity of ExTxA at NaV channels, and that co-expression of TMEM233 modulates the gating properties of NaV1.7. These findings identify TMEM233 as a previously unknown NaV1.7-interacting protein, position TMEM233 and the dispanins as accessory proteins that are indispensable for toxin-mediated effects on NaV channel gating, and provide important insights into the function of NaV channels in sensory neurons
