    Automated generation of SW design constructs from Mesa source code

    This thesis is concerned with the Reverse Engineering of Mesa code. Mesa is a programming language used by the Xerox Corporation especially designed for ultra large scale software projects. Many Xerox projects have considerable amounts of code already developed and in service with very little up to date design documentation. The maintenance phase of Software requires that updates will occur continuously in response to customer demands. Software engineers, often not the original designers, will need to gain a thorough understanding of the code to make reliable changes. This thesis proposes to outline Software tools developed in Mesa that will extract design information. The extracted information should be suitable for the graphical and tabular representations of architectural constructs. The tools will be written and applied originally to a small portion of a current project. These will serve as prototype for tools that could be scaled up to parse several hundred thousand lines of code. Clearly, not all design information is available from the code. The theory section of the thesis will develop an understanding of the design documentation expectations and compare these to the information that can be Reverse Engineered from code

    Development of a Breastfeeding Class Specifically for Working Moms

    Successfully breastfeeding mothers who are planning to return to work and remain exclusively breastfeeding their infants have a knowledge deficit as to the federal law protecting their rights along with the basic skills for pumping, storing, and bottle-feeding of breast milk. There is a significant drop in breastfeeding rates at both the 3 and 6-month marker, which coincides with maternal return to employment. After attending the Working Moms Breastfeeding Class, 100% of mothers reported an increase in knowledge surrounding the law and the CDC’s basic skills for handling pumped breast milk based on a pre/post questionnaire. Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy claims a person’s belief in their capacity to successfully perform a particular task will increase their ability to do so. The CNL theme of Clinical Outcomes Manager with focus of the role of nurse educator has potential to help organizations meet the goal of increasing the percentage of exclusively breastfed babies in accordance with the Healthy People 2020 goals of 42.6% of mothers exclusively breastfeeding their infants at 3 months and 25.5% at 6 months of age. Educating mothers who desire to continue breastfeeding after returning to the workplace is the frontline step to increasing the duration of breastfeeding

    Integrated modeling of advanced optical systems

    This poster session paper describes an integrated modeling and analysis capability being developed at JPL under funding provided by the JPL Director's Discretionary Fund and the JPL Control/Structure Interaction Program (CSI). The posters briefly summarize the program capabilities and illustrate them with an example problem. The computer programs developed under this effort will provide an unprecedented capability for integrated modeling and design of high performance optical spacecraft. The engineering disciplines supported include structural dynamics, controls, optics and thermodynamics. Such tools are needed in order to evaluate the end-to-end system performance of spacecraft such as OSI, POINTS, and SMMM. This paper illustrates the proof-of-concept tools that have been developed to establish the technology requirements and demonstrate the new features of integrated modeling and design. The current program also includes implementation of a prototype tool based upon the CAESY environment being developed under the NASA Guidance and Control Research and Technology Computational Controls Program. This prototype will be available late in FY-92. The development plan proposes a major software production effort to fabricate, deliver, support and maintain a national-class tool from FY-93 through FY-95

    The NASA Risk Informed Decision Making process is used to assess a trade space of three dimensionally woven thermal protection systems for application to the Mars Sample Return Earth Entry Vehicle. Candidate architectures are assessed based on mission assurance, technical development, cost, and schedule risk. Assessment methodology differed between the architectures, utilizing a four-point quantitative scale for mission assurance and technical development and highly tailored PERT techniques for cost and schedule. Risk results are presented, in addition to a review of RIDM effectiveness for this application

    Skill Differentials in Canada in an Era of Rising Labor Market Inequality

    This paper examines educational earnings differentials in Canada in the 1980s and compares changes in differentials to those in the United States. Our major finding is that the college/high school differential increased much less in Canada than in the United States. We also find that within educational groups the distribution of earnings widened, gender pay gaps narrowed, and age pay gaps increased in Canada as in the United States. The greater growth of the college graduate proportion of the work force in Canada than in the United States is one important reason why differentials rose more modestly in Canada than in the United States. The greater strength of Canadian unions in wage-setting, and the faster growth of real national output, and better trade balance in Canada may also have contributed to the lesser rise in differentials. Because Canada and the United States have so many characteristics in common, we interpret our results as indicating that the massive rise of skill differentials in the United States was not the result of some inexorable shift in the economic structure of advanced capitalist countries, but rather reflected specific developments in the U.S. labor market and the way in which the country's decentralised wage-setting system adjusted to these developments.

    The Ge(001) (2 × 1) reconstruction: asymmetric dimers and multilayer relaxation observed by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction

    Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction has been used to analyze in detail the atomic structure of the (2 × 1) reconstruction of the Ge(001) surface involving far reaching subsurface relaxations. Two kinds of disorder models, a statistical and a dynamical were taken into account for the data analysis, both indicating substantial disorder along the surface normal. This can only be correlated to asymmetric dimers. Considering a statistical disorder model assuming randomly oriented dimers the analysis of 13 symmetrically independent in-plane fractional order reflections and of four fractional order reciprocal lattice rods up to the maximum attainable momentum transfer qz = 3c* (c* = 1.77 × 10−1 Å−1) indicates the formation of asymmetric dimers characterized by R>D = 2.46(5) Å as compared to the bulk bonding length of R = 2.45 Å. The dimer height of Δ Z = 0.74(15) Å corresponds to a dimer buckling angle of 17(4)°. The data refinement using anisotropic thermal parameters leads to a bonding length of RD = 2.44(4) Å and to a large anisotropy of the root mean-square vibration amplitudes of the dimer atoms (u112) 1/2 = 0.25 Å, (u222)1/2 = 0.14 Å, (u332)1/2 = 0.50 Å).
