    Effect of Age on Flow-Rate, Protein and Electrolyte Composition of Stimulated Whole Saliva in Healthy, Non-Smoking Women

    As relatively little is known about the effect of age on salivary electrolytes we studied the composition of saliva as function of age to provide reference values for healthy non-smoking women. All non-medicated and non-smoking 30-59-year-old subjects (n=255) selected from among 1030 women participating in a screening program formed the material of the present study. Salivary calcium, inorganic phosphate, magnesium, sodium, potassium, protein and flow-rate of stimulated whole saliva were measured. We found age-related changes in salivary calcium and phosphate concentrations (p=0.001 and p=0.004, respectively, one-way ANOVA). Peak values occurred at around 50-54 years of age. Age had no effect on flow-rate, magnesium, sodium, potassium or proteins. The concentration of sodium correlated positively, while phosphate, potassium, magnesium and protein correlated negatively with the salivary flow-rate. Calcium was the only electrolyte which had no association with flow-rate. Our study provides reference values for salivary electrolytes of 30-59-year-old women

    The Impact of Oral Health on Taste Ability in Acutely Hospitalized Elderly

    Objective: To investigate to what extent various oral health variables are associated with taste ability in acutely hospitalized elderly. Background: Impaired taste may contribute to weight loss in elderly. Many frail elderly have poor oral health characterized by caries, poor oral hygiene, and dry mouth. However, the possible influence of such factors on taste ability in acutely hospitalized elderly has not been investigated. Materials and Methods: The study was cross-sectional. A total of 174 (55 men) acutely hospitalized elderly, coming from their own homes and with adequate cognitive function, were included. Dental status, decayed teeth, oral bacteria, oral hygiene, dry mouth and tongue changes were recorded. Growth of oral bacteria was assessed with CRTH Bacteria Kit. Taste ability was evaluated with 16 taste strips impregnated with sweet, sour, salty and bitter taste solutions in 4 concentrations each. Correct identification was given score 1, and maximum total taste score was 16. Results: Mean age was 84 yrs. (range 70–103 yrs.). Total taste score was significantly and markedly reduced in patients with decayed teeth, poor oral hygiene, high growth of oral bacteria and dry mouth. Sweet and salty taste were particularly impaired in patients with dry mouth. Sour taste was impaired in patients with high growth of oral bacteria.     Oral treatment need and oral treatment intention in a population enrolled in long-term care in nursing homes and home care

    The aim of the study was to evaluate the realistic oral treatment need in a population in southern Sweden enrolled in long-term care (LTC), in nursing homes (NH), or home care (HC), taking into consideration treatment intention. Every third individual enrolled in LTC was selected after proportionally stratifying a total of 866 subjects according to gender. Of these, 732 (85%) were available for a simple clinical oral health evaluation in their own homes. Dental status, oral mucosal status, oral hygiene status, oral mucosal inflammation, and oral mucosal friction were assessed by observational examinations; suspected malignancies were also noted. Oral treatment need was expressed in accordance with the Treatment Need Index (TNI) as no, minor, major, or urgent, while treatment intention was expressed in accordance with the Treatment Intention Index (TII) as the aim to relieve, delay, maintain, or improve. The rationale for using the TII is to offer subjects in this generally frail population oral treatment at an appropriate level, taking their medical condition into consideration. It was found that 61% of the sample had a need not just for an oral health evaluation but also for additional dental treatment, 31% to be accomplished by prophylactic and 30% by reparative or emergency measures; only l % were estimated to be in urgent need. Furthermore, one manifest and one suspected oral malignancy were found. The results indicate that realistic oral treatment need, guided by the examiner’s estimation of the appropriate treatment intention, is modest in this population, but that regular oral screening is mandatory
