Dispersion and the electron-phonon interaction in a single heterostructure
We investigate the electron-phonon interaction in a polar-polar single heterostructure through the use of the linear combination of hybrid phonon modes, considering the role of longitudinal optical, transverse optical and interface modes, using a continuum model that accounts for both mechanical and electrical continuity over a heterostructure interface. We discuss the use of other models for such systems, such as the bulk phonon (3DP) and dielectric continuum (DC) models, using previously developed sum-rules to explain the limitations on their validity. We find that our linear combination (LC) model gives an excellent agreement with scattering rates previously derived using the 3DP and DC models when the lattice dispersion is weak enough to be ignored, however, when there is a noticeable lattice dispersion, the LC model returns a different answer, suggesting that interface modes play a much greater part in the scattering characteristics of the system under certain conditions. Hot phonon effects on high field transport in GaN & AlN
We have studied the effects of hot phonons on the high-field transport in GaN & AlN. The dynamics of the non-equilibrium electron-LO phonon system is studied via an ensemble Monte-Carlo code. We find that under steady-state conditions the hot-phonons cause the randomization of the electron momentum and increase their mean energy leading to diffusive heating. Average electron energies of three and two times those in the equilibrium phonon cases are found for GaN and AlN at applied fields of 100 kV/cm and 350 kV/cm respectively. The electron velocity is reduced compared to the case with equilibrium phonons at the lattice temperature. In the transient regime peak velocities reached at overshoot are reduced when non-equilibrium phonons are taken into account
Fourier Transform Spectroscopy of the submillimetre continuum emission from hot molecular cores
We have used a Fourier Transform Spectrometer on the James Clerk Maxwell
Telescope to study the submillimetre continuum emission from dust in three hot
molecular cores (HMC). The spectral index beta of the dust emission for these
sources has been determined solely within the 30 GHz wide 350 GHz (850 micron)
passband to an accuracy comparable to those determined through multi-wavelength
observations. We find an average beta = 1.6, in agreement with spectral indices
determined from previous submillimetre observations of these sources and with
those determined for HMC in general. The largest single source of uncertainty
in these results is the variability of the atmosphere at 350 GHz, and with
better sky subtraction techniques we show that the dust spectral index can
clearly be determined within one passband to high accuracy with a submillimetre
FTS. Using an imaging FTS on SCUBA-2, the next generation wide-field
submillimetre camera currently under development to replace SCUBA at the JCMT
in 2006, we calculate that at 350 GHz it will be possible to determine beta to
+/- 0.1 for sources as faint as 400 mJy/beam and to +/- 0.3 for sources as

Deep learning with convolutional neural networks for decoding and visualization of EEG pathology
We apply convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) to the task of
distinguishing pathological from normal EEG recordings in the Temple University
Hospital EEG Abnormal Corpus. We use two basic, shallow and deep ConvNet
architectures recently shown to decode task-related information from EEG at
least as well as established algorithms designed for this purpose. In decoding
EEG pathology, both ConvNets reached substantially better accuracies (about 6%
better, ~85% vs. ~79%) than the only published result for this dataset, and
were still better when using only 1 minute of each recording for training and
only six seconds of each recording for testing. We used automated methods to
optimize architectural hyperparameters and found intriguingly different ConvNet
architectures, e.g., with max pooling as the only nonlinearity. Visualizations
of the ConvNet decoding behavior showed that they used spectral power changes
in the delta (0-4 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) frequency range, possibly alongside
other features, consistent with expectations derived from spectral analysis of
the EEG data and from the textual medical reports. Analysis of the textual
medical reports also highlighted the potential for accuracy increases by
integrating contextual information, such as the age of subjects. In summary,
the ConvNets and visualization techniques used in this study constitute a next
step towards clinically useful automated EEG diagnosis and establish a new

Beyond the sentence: Shared reading within a high secure hospital
Ashworth Hospital provides care for inpatients detained under the Mental Health Acts who present a danger to themselves or others. Rehabilitative interventions can help support the best outcomes for patients, their families, care providers, and society. The efficacy of weekly Shared Reading sessions for four patients with experience of psychosis and a history of self-harm was investigated using a 12-month longitudinal case series design. Session data were subjected to psychological discourse analysis to identify discursive strategies employed to accomplish social action and change over the duration of the intervention. Archetypes of interactional achievement across sessions emerged. Broadening of capacity to consider was demonstrated through increased hedging and less declarative language. Increased assertiveness was achieved through reduced generalisation marked by a transition from second-person plural pronouns to more first-person singular pronouns. Avoidance of expression and disagreement strategies diminished over time. In addition, heightened engagement was accomplished through the increased tendency to employ functionally related and preferred responses within adjacency pairs, which mirrored non-verbal communicative strategies. Shared Reading shows promise for promoting the interactional accomplishment for individuals within high secure settings, who are ready to undertake a recovery-related activity. Pathways of interaction should continue to be explored, with consideration to the current study’s strengths and limitations. This study contributes to the understanding of efficacious reading study design and the interactional outcomes of therapeutic reading
Criminal benefit, the confiscation order and the post-conviction confiscation regime
Governments and law enforcement agencies around the world seek to identify and confiscate the 'proceeds of crime' on the assertion that doing so will deter offending and symbolise to citizens and communities that 'crime does not pay'. In the UK such assertions have underpinned the enactment of legislation, the investment in law enforcement agents and the development of wide ranging new technologies to facilitate the identification of assets and their recovery. This paper critically considers two key concepts which fundamentally drive the post-conviction confiscation regime in the UK. First, 'criminal benefit' which is the amount that a defendant is adjudged to have made from 'criminal conduct'. Second, the 'available amount' which is the amount that the state hopes to recover from a defendant via the court ordered 'confiscation order'. In so doing, this paper explores the assumptions at the heart of the 2002 Proceeds of Crime Act and their application in practice, concentrating on the nature of the powers accorded to financial investigators and how these powers have been interpreted and applied. It is argued that far from representing the 'profit' generated from crime these values are constructs founded in the relationship between legislation, the discretional practice of police officers and financial investigators, organisational restrictions and constraints and informal negotiation and compromise between the defence and prosecution. This has implications for both conceptualising the nature of the post-conviction confiscation regime as well as for shaping what the state might expect to recover from defendants. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

A case study on practical live event sound exposure monitoring
The recently launched WHO Global Standard for Safe Listening Venues and Events aims to make listening safer and more enjoyable for audiences around the world. Some key questions remain on how to practically monitor sound exposure as well as on how patrons’ hearing may be affected after significant exposure. This paper presents a case study where various sound exposure monitoring systems and methods were trialed in an indoor music venue. The aim of the work was to develop and validate a practical, accurate and repeatable technique to track sound exposure across music venues that can be presented in real-time. Results indicate that this can be achieved with no more than four, and as few as two, sound level monitoring locations alongside fixed calibration measurements and a small number of spot measurements at the mix position during a performance
Monitoring sustainability within a regional WASH project: emerging lessons from West and Central Africa
This paper describes the implementation of a sustainability monitoring framework within an ongoing regional WASH project in nine countries in West and Central Africa. The paper describes and draws lessons in relation to implementation processes such as development of a common monitoring framework and the procurement of independent parties to conduct sustainability checks of project outputs and outcomes. The paper goes on to describe how based on these lessons and the wider discussion about the role of project monitoring systems in developing countries, project stakeholders have decided to move towards an approach that seeks to strengthen and use country monitoring systems, forge stronger links to other regional and global monitoring processes and develop an advocacy strategy aimed at leveraging increased financial contributions by government
