A half-century of transformations in the brazilian rural scenario and the governamental action.
The purpose of this article is to associate the history of land in contemporary Brazil to government action, especially in relation to the most recent challenges when implementing its policies. The interpretation of Brazilian agrarian history is presented addressing the last fifty years, which is divided in five phases of ever-growing complexity. The first section highlights the crucial role of the modernization drive of the 1970s, a historical period when a new form of sociability became ingrained. Thereafter, the article presents some of the most notable changes in recent years, and calls attention to economic and productive aspects, although equally stressing the growing politicization of current debates about the future of rural Brazil. The last section summarizes some of the challengesconsidered urgent, which are confronting Brazilian agriculture in these times. In the conclusion, the article argues the need to discuss and implement a consistent strategy for rural development in Brazil, a overnment action which still does not exist
Dark Energy, scalar-curvature couplings and a critical acceleration scale
We study the effects of coupling a cosmologically rolling scalar field to
higher order curvature terms. We show that when the strong coupling scale of
the theory is on the 10^{-3}-10^{-1}eV range, the model passes all experimental
bounds on the existence of fifth forces even if the field has a mass of the
order of the Hubble scale in vacuum and non-suppressed couplings to SM fields.
The reason is that the coupling to certain curvature invariant acts as an
effective mass that grows in regions of large curvature. This prevents the
field from rolling down its potential near sources and makes its effects on
fifth-force search experiments performed in the laboratory to be observable
only at the sub-mm scale. We obtain the static spherically symmetric solutions
of the theory and show that a long-range force appears but it is turned on only
below a fixed Newtonian acceleration scale of the order of the Hubble constant.
We comment on the possibility of using this feature of the model to alleviate
the CDM small scale crisis and on its possible relation to MOND.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Risk-Seeking versus Risk-Avoiding Investments in Noisy Periodic Environments
We study the performance of various agent strategies in an artificial
investment scenario. Agents are equipped with a budget, , and at each
time step invest a particular fraction, , of their budget. The return on
investment (RoI), , is characterized by a periodic function with
different types and levels of noise. Risk-avoiding agents choose their fraction
proportional to the expected positive RoI, while risk-seeking agents
always choose a maximum value if they predict the RoI to be positive
("everything on red"). In addition to these different strategies, agents have
different capabilities to predict the future , dependent on their
internal complexity. Here, we compare 'zero-intelligent' agents using technical
analysis (such as moving least squares) with agents using reinforcement
learning or genetic algorithms to predict . The performance of agents is
measured by their average budget growth after a certain number of time steps.
We present results of extensive computer simulations, which show that, for our
given artificial environment, (i) the risk-seeking strategy outperforms the
risk-avoiding one, and (ii) the genetic algorithm was able to find this optimal
strategy itself, and thus outperforms other prediction approaches considered.Comment: 27 pp. v2 with minor corrections. See http://www.sg.ethz.ch for more

Lensing in an interior Kottler solution
We derive the interior Kottler solution of the incompressible fluid and show
that the bending of light in this solution does depend on the cosmological
constant.Comment: The inner Kottler solution derived and used in this paper is not new.

Emergence of Small-Scale Magnetic Loops in the Quiet Sun Internetwork
We study the emergence of magnetic flux at very small spatial scales (less
than 2 arcsec) in the quiet Sun internetwork. To this aim, a time series of
spectropolarimetric maps was taken at disk center using the instrument SP/SOT
on board Hinode. The LTE inversion of the full Stokes vector measured in the Fe
I 6301 and 6302 A lines allows us to retrieve the magnetic flux and topology in
the region of study. In the example presented here, the magnetic flux emerges
within a granular structure. The horizontal magnetic field appears prior to any
significant amount of vertical field. As time goes on, the traces of the
horizontal field disappear while the the vertical dipoles drift -carried by the
plasma motions- towards the surrounding intergranular lanes. These events take
place within typical granulation timescales.Comment: 9 pages (referee format), 3 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ
