Preliminary assessment of the vacuum environment in the wake of large space vehicles

    Get PDF
The vacuum environment in the wake region of presently planned large space vehicles is calculated using simplified models of the particle fluxes from the various sources. The fluxes which are calculated come directly from the ambient, are due to ambient particles backscattered from spacecraft emissions, and are due to self scattering of spacecraft emissions. Using nominal values for the surface emissions, the flux density environment behind a large unmanned craft at 550 km altitude is calculated. Calculations indicate that the flux density on a wake vacuum experiment conducted in the vicinity of the shuttle is substantially greater than that behind unmanned craft

Postflight analysis of the single-axis acoustic system on SPAR VI and recommendations for future flights

    Get PDF
The single axis acoustic levitator that was flown on SPAR VI malfunctioned. The results of a series of tests, analyses, and investigation of hypotheses that were undertaken to determine the probable cause of failure are presented, together with recommendations for future flights of the apparatus. The most probable causes of the SPAR VI failure were lower than expected sound intensity due to mechanical degradation of the sound source, and an unexpected external force that caused the experiment sample to move radially and eventually be lost from the acoustic energy well

Molecular ruby: exploring the excited state landscape

    Get PDF
The discovery of the highly NIR-luminescent molecular ruby [Cr(ddpd)2]3+ (ddpd = N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine) has been a milestone in the development of earth-abundant luminophors and has led to important new impulses in the field of spin-flip emitters. Its favourable optical properties such as a high photoluminescence quantum yield and long excited state lifetime are traced back to a remarkable excited state landscape which has been investigated in great detail. This article summarises the results of these studies with the aim to create a coherent picture of the excited state ordering and the ultrafast as well as long-timescale dynamics. Additional experimental data is provided to fill in gaps left by previous reports

Contribution of the nucleon-hyperon reaction channels to K^- production in proton-nucleus collisions

The cross sections for producing K^- mesons in nucleon-hyperon elementary processes are estimated assuming one-pion exchange and using the experimentally known pion-hyperon cross sections. The results are implemented in a transport model which is applied to calculation of proton-nucleus collisions. In significant difference to earlier estimates for heavy-ion collisions the inclusion of the nucleon-hyperon cross section roughly doubles the K^- production in near-threshold proton-nucleus collisions

Transitioning to Multiple-use Polyculture Grassland-derived Bioenergy Feedstock Systems

    Get PDF
We argue that research and development of grassland-derived bioenergy feedstock (GBF) has focused unduly on dedicated monospecific biomass systems to the detriment of more stable multiple-use multispecies grasslands. This has retarded GBF adoption as a viable, sustainable contribution to renewable energy production in North America. We hypothesize that focusing on multiple-use GBFs will foster greater feedstock availability for nascent renewable energy generation while minimizing financial risk to grassland husbandry during market transitions from current grazing systems to more flexible business models. Our hypothesis is that source and demand are more likely to develop simultaneously under less risky multiple-use grassland management. We review what little research exists detailing such multiple-use systems that include GBF as a major component. We propose that more federal and private sector research funding should focus on perennial forage legumes and bunchgrasses for multiple uses including forage, bioenergy, grassland restoration, wildlife, and ecosystems services such as hydrology, carbon capture and biodiversity. These data cover both native and introduced species in cultivated pastures as well as managed rangeland and native grassland. We conclude that more research effort should be focused on multiple-use GBF in order to identify individual species, mixtures and ecosystems that provide flexibility in the face of unpredictable grassland environments and volatile energy markets

The central nervous system of sea cucumbers (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) shows positive immunostaining for a chordate glial secretion

Abstract

Background

Echinoderms and chordates belong to the same monophyletic taxon, the Deuterostomia. In spite of significant differences in body plan organization, the two phyla may share more common traits than was thought previously. Of particular interest are the common features in the organization of the central nervous system. The present study employs two polyclonal antisera raised against bovine Reissner's substance (RS), a secretory product produced by glial cells of the subcomissural organ, to study RS-like immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of sea cucumbers.

Results

In the ectoneural division of the nervous system, both antisera recognize the content of secretory vacuoles in the apical cytoplasm of the radial glia-like cells of the neuroepithelium and in the flattened glial cells of the non-neural epineural roof epithelium. The secreted immunopositive material seems to form a thin layer covering the cell apices. There is no accumulation of the immunoreactive material on the apical surface of the hyponeural neuroepithelium or the hyponeural roof epithelium. Besides labelling the supporting cells and flattened glial cells of the epineural roof epithelium, both anti-RS antisera reveal a previously unknown putative glial cell type within the neural parenchyma of the holothurian nervous system.

Conclusion

Our results show that: a) the glial cells of the holothurian tubular nervous system produce a material similar to Reissner's substance known to be synthesized by secretory glial cells in all chordates studied so far; b) the nervous system of sea cucumbers shows a previously unrealized complexity of glial organization. Our findings also provide significant clues for interpretation of the evolution of the nervous system in the Deuterostomia. It is suggested that echinoderms and chordates might have inherited the RS-producing radial glial cell type from the central nervous system of their common ancestor, i.e., the last common ancestor of all the Deuterostomia.</p

Single-Pion Production in pp Collisions at 0.95 GeV/c (II)

The single-pion production reactions ppdπ+pp\to d\pi^+, ppnpπ+pp\to np\pi^+ and ppppπ0pp\to pp\pi^0 were measured at a beam momentum of 0.95 GeV/c (TpT_p \approx 400 MeV) using the short version of the COSY-TOF spectrometer. The central calorimeter provided particle identification, energy determination and neutron detection in addition to time-of-flight and angle measurements from other detector parts. Thus all pion production channels were recorded with 1-4 overconstraints. Main emphasis is put on the presentation and discussion of the npπ+np\pi^+ channel, since the results on the other channels have already been published previously. The total and differential cross sections obtained are compared to theoretical calculations. In contrast to the ppπ0pp\pi^0 channel we find in the npπ+np\pi^+ channel a strong influence of the Δ\Delta excitation already at this energy close to threshold. In particular we find a (3cos2Θ+1)(3 cos^2\Theta + 1) dependence in the pion angular distribution, typical for a pure s-channel Δ\Delta excitation and identical to that observed in the dπ+d\pi^+ channel. Since the latter is understood by a s-channel resonance in the 1D2^1D_2 pnpn partial wave, we discuss an analogous scenario for the pnπ+pn\pi^+ channel
