    Nutritional profile and obesity: results from a random‑sample population‑based study in Córdoba, Argentina

    Introduction Obesity is a chronic, heterogeneous, multifactorial disease, which has sharply increased in prevalence in both developed and developing countries. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of obesity and to identify socio-demographic risk factors associated with it, with special emphasis on diet. Methods Nutritional status, demographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, and food consumption patterns derived from a Food Frequency Questionnaire were investigated. Exhaustive exploratory analyses were performed in order to describe dietary patterns, and logistic regression models were used for odds ratio estimation. Results The study included 4328 subjects, over 18 years old and resident in Cordoba city. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 34 and 17 %, respectively, with 60 % in men and 45 % in women of BMI ≥ 25. Obesity risk factors were high intake of sodium, refined grains, starchy vegetables, and snacks. A lower risk of overweight and obesity was associated with an adequate, moderate intake of meats, eggs, alcoholic beverages, sugar and sweets, milk, yogurt, and pulses. Conclusions A high intake of snacks, refined grains, starchy vegetables and sodium and low intake of yogurt, milk, pulses, and whole grains seem to be associated with the emergence and high prevalence of obesity in Cordoba, Argentina.publishedVersionFil: Aballay, Laura Rosana.     Oral high dose ascorbic acid treatment for one year in young CMT1A patients: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>High dose oral ascorbic acid substantially improved myelination and locomotor function in a Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A mouse model. A phase II study was warranted to investigate whether high dose ascorbic acid also has such a substantial effect on myelination in Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A patients and whether this treatment is safe.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Patients below age 25 years were randomly assigned to receive placebo or ascorbic acid (one gram twice daily) in a double-blind fashion during one year. The primary outcome measure was the change over time in motor nerve conduction velocity of the median nerve. Secondary outcome measures included changes in minimal F response latencies, compound muscle action potential amplitude, muscle strength, sensory function, Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy score, and disability.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no significant differences between the six placebo-treated (median age 16 years, range 13 to 24) and the five ascorbic acid-treated (19, 14 to 24) patients in change in motor nerve conduction velocity of the median nerve (mean difference ascorbic acid as opposed to placebo treatment of 1.3 m/s, confidence interval -0.3 to 3.0 m/s, <it>P </it>= 0.11) or in change of any of the secondary outcome measures over time. One patient in the ascorbic acid group developed a skin rash, which led to discontinuation of the study medication.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Oral high dose ascorbic acid for one year did not improve myelination of the median nerve in young Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A patients.     Dysglycemias in pregnancy: from diagnosis to treatment. Brazilian consensus statement

    There is an urgent need to find consensus on screening, diagnosing and treating all degrees of DYSGLYCEMIA that may occur during pregnancies in Brazil, considering that many cases of DYSGLYCEMIA in pregnant women are currently not diagnosed, leading to maternal and fetal complications. For this reason the Brazilian Diabetes Society (SBD) and the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Societies (FEBRASGO), got together to introduce this proposal. We present here a joint consensus regarding the standardization of clinical management for pregnant women with any degree of Dysglycemia, on the basis of current information, to improve medical assistance and to avoid related complications of Dysglycemia in pregnancy to the mother and the fetus. This consensus aims to standardize the diagnosis among general practitioners, endocrinologists and obstetricians allowing the dissemination of information in basic health units, public and private services, that are responsible for screening, diagnosing and treating disglycemic pregnant patients

    Elemental content and nutritional study of blood orange juice

    Background: The elemental content of Sicilian red orange juices and the bioaccessibility of many elements of particular nutritional interest was evaluated. Results: The elemental content of fresh juices from Sicilian blood oranges was analysed by ICP-OES, GF AAS, HG-AAS and CV AAS. Among the macroelements (Na, Ca, K, Mg and P), potassium occurred in the greatest amount, with 3.64% of the requested RDA for 100 mL of juice daily intake. Thevalues of RDA 100 mL-1 of juice for Mg, P, Ca and Na resulted1.61%, 1.26%, 0.59% and 0.09% respectively. For the traceelementsCr, Cu andSe, theRDA 100 mL-1 of juice were 9.20%, 7.14% and1.82%, respectively. In vitro tests simulating the digestive process showed high bioaccessibility only for boron and manganese while that of copper, zinc and iron were consistently lower. CONCLUSIONS:Sicili an blood orange juices gave different results from non-pigmented orange juices interms of a higher content of copper, boron and lower content of chromium and manganese. However, among the nutritionally important elements, only manganese showed high bioaccessibility. The low bioaccessibility found for iron, zinc and copper is likely due to the presence in the orange juice of ligands such as polyphenols and organic acids. © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry
