Massive galaxies with very young AGN

Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxies are generally thought to be the young counterparts of classical extended radio sources and live in massive ellipticals. GPS sources are vital for studying the early evolution of radio-loud AGN, the trigger of their nuclear activity, and the importance of feedback in galaxy evolution. We study the Parkes half-Jansky sample of GPS radio galaxies of which now all host galaxies have been identified and 80% has their redshifts determined (0.122 < z < 1.539). Analysis of the absolute magnitudes of the GPS host galaxies show that at z > 1 they are on average a magnitude fainter than classical 3C radio galaxies. This suggests that the AGN in young radio galaxies have not yet much influenced the overall properties of the host galaxy. However their restframe UV luminosities indicate that there is a low level of excess as compared to passive evolution models.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of "Formation and Evolution of Galaxy Bulges", IAUS 245; M. Distance measures to compare real and ideal quantum processes

    Get PDF
With growing success in experimental implementations it is critical to identify a "gold standard" for quantum information processing, a single measure of distance that can be used to compare and contrast different experiments. We enumerate a set of criteria such a distance measure must satisfy to be both experimentally and theoretically meaningful. We then assess a wide range of possible measures against these criteria, before making a recommendation as to the best measures to use in characterizing quantum information processing.Comment: 15 pages; this version in line with published versio

Spin lifetimes of electrons injected into GaAs and GaN

The spin relaxation time of electrons in GaAs and GaN are determined with a model that includes momentum scattering by phonons and ionized impurities, and spin scattering by the Elliot-Yafet, D'yakonov-Perel, and Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms. Accurate bands generated using a long-range tight-binding Hamiltonian obtained from empirical pseudopotentials are used. The inferred temperature-dependence of the spin relaxation lifetime agrees well with measured values in GaAs. We further show that the spin lifetimes decrease rapidly with injected electrons energy and reach a local maximum at the longitudinal optical phonon energy. Our calculation predicts that electron spin lifetime in pure GaN is about 3 orders of magnitude longer than in GaAs at all temperatures, primarily as a result of the lower spin-orbit interaction and higher conduction band density of states.Comment: 8 pages and 3 figure

Bimolecular sinks of Criegee intermediates derived from hydrofluoroolefins:a computational analysis

    Get PDF
A novel range of stabilised Criegee intermediate (sCI) species with halogenated substituent groups have been identified as products to the reaction between with gaseous ozone and hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), a series of recently-developed and increasingly prevalent haloalkene refrigerants. The bimolecular chemistry of this group of hydrofluoroolefin-derived sCIs (HFO-sCIs) has yet to be explored in any significant detail so this work evaluates the reaction chemistry of common tropospheric gaseous species with the following group of HFO-sCIs: syn- & anti-CF3CHOO & syn- & anti-CF3CFOO. Using high-level theoretical calculations (DF-HF/DF-LCCSD(T)-F12a//B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ), this study demonstrates that HFO-sCIs will deplete many pollutants (e.g. HCHO, SO2 & H2S) but also act as a source of other atmospheric contaminants (e.g. SO3 & TFA). The bimolecular reactivity of the HFO-sCIs were compared against CH2OO, the most frequently studied sCI, for which the general reactivity trend has been identified: kTHEO (syn-CF3CHOO) < kTHEO (anti-CF3CHOO) ≈ kTHEO (CH2OO) ≪ kTHEO (anti-CF3CFOO) < kTHEO (syn-CF3CFOO). In general syn & anti-CF3 substituents reduce overall sCI reactivity compared to similar non-halogenated sCI species, whereas both syn & anti-F substituents significantly increase HFO-sCI reactivity. While HFO-sCI reactivity is largely dictated by the identity and location of the sCI substituent groups, there are co-reactants that alter these observed trends in reactivity, for example HCl reacts more rapidly with CH2OO than it does with syn- & anti-CF3CFOO

Spectroscopic applications and frequency locking of THz photomixing with distributed-Bragg-reflector diode lasers in low-temperature-grown GaAs

    Get PDF
A compact, narrow-linewidth, tunable source of THz radiation has been developed for spectroscopy and other high-resolution applications. Distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) diode lasers at 850 nm are used to pump a low-temperature-grown GaAs photomixer. Resonant optical feedback is employed to stabilize the center frequencies and narrow the linewidths of the DBR lasers. The heterodyne linewidth full-width at half-maximum of two optically locked DBR lasers is 50 kHz on the 20 ms time scale and 2 MHz over 10 s; free-running DBR lasers have linewidths of 40 and 90 MHz on such time scales. This instrument has been used to obtain rotational spectra of acetonitrile (CH3CN) at 313 GHz. Detection limits of 1 × 10^–4 Hz^1/2 (noise/total power) have been achieved, with the noise floor dominated by the detector's noise equivalent power

A new transfer-matrix algorithm for exact enumerations: Self-avoiding polygons on the square lattice

We present a new and more efficient implementation of transfer-matrix methods for exact enumerations of lattice objects. The new method is illustrated by an application to the enumeration of self-avoiding polygons on the square lattice. A detailed comparison with the previous best algorithm shows significant improvement in the running time of the algorithm. The new algorithm is used to extend the enumeration of polygons to length 130 from the previous record of 110.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, IoP style file
