    Low triglyceride levels are associated with a better metabolic control in patients with type 1 diabetes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although it is well known in the literature that high triglyceride serum (TG) levels can jeopardize the metabolic control, little is known about the influence of low TG on type 1 diabetes patients (T1D). The aim of this study is to investigate the distribution of TG serum levels in individuals with T1D and its relationship with metabolic control.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>We reviewed the medical charts of 180 patients with T1D, who were classified in groups according to TG levels: 1) low (below 50 mg/dL); 2) normal (50-150 mg/dL); 3) high (above 150 mg/dL). TG were low in 21.1% (n = 38; group 1), normal in 68.6% (n = 123; group 2) and high in 10.6% (n = 19; group 3). High TG was associated with a poor metabolic control (p < 0.001). Patients with TG lower than 50 mg/dL had a lower HbA1c than those with TG between 50 and 150 mg/dL (7.41+/-1.50% vs 8.56%+/-1.94%; p = 0.002).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>TG lower than 50 mg/dL was common and might be associated with a better metabolic control in patients with T1D, although it is not clear whether the former is the cause or consequence for the latter.</p

    Study of the composition of coaxial microfibers with phase change materials under thermal analysis

    Asphalt pavements cover a large area of urban centers and are directly related to Urban Heat Islands (UHI). These materials heat up by absorbing a large amount of solar energy and then slowly release it, generating environmental, economic and social impacts that directly harm the well-being of citizens. The use of Phase Change Materials (PCM) in asphalt mixtures is indicated in the literature as an efficient thermoregulation method to mitigate UHI. However, their direct incorporation in asphalt mixtures presents some disadvantages related to modifying the asphalt structure after PCM melting. The development of Coaxial Polymeric Fibers (CPF) emerges as an innovative alternative to incorporate PCM in asphalt mixtures. Thus, the research herein reported aims to produce and select the best composition of coaxial fibers composed of Polyethylene glycol (PEG) as PCM and core and cellulose acetate (Mn: 30,000 and 50,000) as sheath. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used for thermal characterization. TGA was used to analyse whether the materials could tolerate the mixing and compaction temperatures of the asphalt mixtures (up to about 200°C) without any mass loss, and DSC to assess the melting point for the CPF. Thereby it is possible to determine the effect of cellulose acetate molecular weight on the phase change temperature of PEG inside the CPF. This information will aid in deciding on suitable materials for asphalt concrete mixtures capable of withstanding asphalt mixing temperatures

    Reducing the effects of Low Albedo of asphalt materials incorporating Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 1000, 2000 and 4000 as Phase Change Materials (PCM)

    Albedo plays a vital role in urban microclimates. Civil engineering structures usually absorb a high amount of energy in form of heat, for example asphalt pavements, which have a low albedo, thus contributing to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects. Modifying the physical characteristics of asphalt pavements, including reflectance and thermal properties, can help mitigate UHI. The literature points out that one alternative to thermoregulating asphalt materials is the incorporation of phase change materials. Thus, the main goal of this research is to present a systematic review regarding the effectiveness of the incorporation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1000, 2000 and 4000 as Phase Change Material (PCM) in asphalt materials. The results showed that incorporating PEG into asphalt materials can regulate heat storage, promoting stability and reducing UHI effects. PEG2000 was more frequently used.     Coaxial fibres incorporated with phase change materials for thermoregulation applications

    Nowadays, the growing concern about improving thermal comfort in different structures (textiles, buildings, and pavements, among others) has stimulated research into phase change materials (PCMs). The direct incorporation of PCMs into composite materials can cause mechanical impacts. Therefore, this study focuses on the design of phase change coaxial fibres (PCFs), using commercial cellulose acetate (CA) or recycled CA obtained from cotton fabrics (CAt) as the sheath and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 2000 as the core, via the wet spinning method; the fibres vary in molecular weight, concentration and ejection velocity. The fibres were assessed for their optical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The presence of PEG2000 is confirmed in the core of the fibres. Thermal analyses revealed a mass loss at high temperatures, attributable to the presence of PEG2000. Notably, the fibres with CA (Mn 30,000) showed superior thermal and mechanical performance. The melting point of PEG2000 incorporated into these PCFs coincided with the melting point of pure PEG2000 (about 55 °C), with a slight deviation, indicating that PCFs were obtained.     Advancements in phase change materials in asphalt pavements for mitigation of urban heat island effect: bibliometric analysis and systematic review

    This research presents a dual-pronged bibliometric and systematic review of the integration of phase change materials (PCMs) in asphalt pavements to counteract the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The bibliometric approach discerns the evolution of PCM-inclusion asphalt research, highlighting a marked rise in the number of publications between 2019 and 2022. Notably, Chang’an University in China has emerged as a leading contributor. The systematic review addresses key questions like optimal PCM types for UHI effect mitigation, strategies for PCM leakage prevention in asphalt, and effects on mechanical properties. The findings identify polyethylene glycols (PEGs), especially PEG2000 and PEG4000, as prevailing PCMs due to their wide phase-change temperature range and significant enthalpy during phase transitions. While including PCMs can modify asphalt’s mechanical attributes, such mixtures typically stay within performance norms.     Fatores associados à redução de atendimentos odontológicos na Atenção Primária à Saúde no Brasil, com o surgimento da COVID-19: estudo transversal, 2020

    Objective: To analyze the associated factors of reductions for dental visits performed in Primary Health Care (PHC) in Brazil during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Crosssectional study with PHC dentists. The outcome was a reduction in dental care appointments and that the exposure variables included sociodemographic factors, aspects about personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE) and measures adopted by the Basic Health Unit (UBS) in Brazil after the appearance of COVID. Poisson regression was performed, used to determine the prevalence ratio and 95% confidence interval. Results: Reduction in visits above 50% after the onset of the pandemic was reported by 62.6% of 958 participating. Biosafety protocols (PR=1.04 – 95%CI 1.01;1.07), PPE suggested by the protocols (PR=0.94 – 95%CI 0.89;0.99), and telescreening (PR=0.90 – 95%CI 0.85;0.96) were factors associated with this reduction. Conclusion: The availability of the new PPE and the implementation of telescreening at UBS seem to have minimized the reduction in dental care after the onset of the pandemicObjetivo: Analizar factores asociados a la reducción de consultas odontológicas en Atención Primaria de Salud (APS) en Brasil durante COVID-19. Métodos: Estudio transversal con dentistas de APS. El hecho investigado fue reducción de consultas odontológicas y las variables de exposición incluyeron factores sociodemográficos, aspectos de los equipos de protección personal (EPI) y las medidas adoptadas por la Unidad Básica de Salud (UBS) tras la aparición del COVID. Regresión de Poisson utilizada para determinar la razón de prevalencia y el intervalo de confianza del 95%. Resultados: El 62,6% de los 958 participantes informó una reducción en la asistencia superior al 50% después del inicio de la pandemia. La adopción de protocolos (RP=1,04 – IC95% 1,01;1,07), disponibilidad de EPI recomendado por los nuevos protocolos (RP=0,94 – IC95% 0,89;0,99) y la adopción de televaluación (RP=0,90 – IC95% 0,85;0,96) fueron factores que se asoció con esta reducción.     Comprometimento da saúde no pós-alta de pacientes tratados por Hanseníase e fatores relacionados

    Objetivo: mapear evidências na literatura científica sobre o comprometimento de saúde no pós-alta de pacientes tratados por Hanseníase e fatores relacionados. Materiais e Método: revisão de escopo realizada a partir das bases de dados CINAHL, LILACS, MEDLINE, PUBMED, SCOPUS e Web of Science em março de 2021, norteados pela estratégia mnemônica que auxilia na identificação do Problema, Conceito e Contexto propostos pelo Instituto Joanna Briggs, sistematizados por meio do fluxograma PRISMA-ScR e registrados na Open Science Framework (osf.io/vmdc6). Foram incluídos estudos sobre a temática publicados até fevereiro de 2021 no cenário nacional e internacional. Resultados: dos dez artigos incluídos na amostra final, nove evidenciaram algum grau de comprometimento funcional, demonstrando fragilidades no acompanhamento desde o diagnóstico até o período pós-alta. Conclusões: evidencia-se acometimentos com maior frequência sobretudo de ordem física, que impactam diretamente a funcionalidade nas atividades de vida diária e social dessas pessoas. As fragilidades no monitoramento pós-alta foram relacionadas ao déficit de profissionais capacitados, ao desconhecimento de técnicas de avaliação e classificação do grau de incapacidade, à carência na oferta de educação em saúde, à dificuldade de acesso aos serviços de saúde, ao atraso no tratamento dos episódios reacionais e reabilitação biopsicossocial e à ausência da sistematização do cuidado

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.
